How to pop in the pipe?

Out at Hood for the summer and I've been venturing into the pipe. Having never skied pipe before, when do I pop to prevent myself from going to the deck or too far down the transition?

Since you're up at hood, ask someone who looks like they know what they're doing to show you when to on the pipe, it's going to be a lot easier to explain when someone can show you as opposed to reading about it.

Regardless, someone on here will probably be able to explain it pretty well.

Try and angle your pop down the pipe rather than straight up and down the wall. My first flair attempts were launching me straight to the flats until someone told me to focus on that.

Set the rotation the other way? You really just need to be on your edges, and hit the wall at an angle. Just watch the pros go down the pipe.

Carve up hill. The point is not to take off with your bases flat, regardless whether you're going alley-oop or down the pipe.
And OP, making sure to keep a centered stance will help (toes, knees, noise aligned). I like the term Mingg used 'squirt your tails' you really don't want to juice them, just a light Ollie like a 'squirt' to keep you from going to the deck. Also make sure to spot the sweet spot of the tranny. Best thing is to hike the pipe and experiment with some popping variations so you can find what suits you. And like someone said watch who's riding the pipe and ask them. Watching surfing videos might help too, to see how they pop off a wave.

You just gotta extend as you ride up the wall. Notice if you absorb the wall as you ride up you will land on the deck. You gotta be ready for the compression keep your hands eyes and chest up. If there are better people hitting the pipe when you get there just do what they do.

i'm the last person to ask for advice from about pipe, but this would be my main piece of advice. flex your core and legs just like you do on normal jumps to deal with the compression, and pop off the wall with your legs more than you think you'd need to

i landed on the deck like 5 times when learning flairs before accepting that i had to push off more than felt comfortable

Popping in the pipe is virtually nothing like like popping off a jump or onto a rail. Think of it more like riding the pipe, carving the pipe, not hitting it like a jump. Dinkleberg is spot on. Go for less hits, not more.

The best one was JF Cusson teaching people how to do a 360 huntony. But they had all kinds of awesome tips on there. Anyone?

haha yeah that site was the shit back then. i remember watching.. i think it was evan raps's cork 7 over and over

it's really too bad that site didn't continue to thrive and grow up with park skiing, nowadays it could be a totally comprehensive guide that truly started right at the beginning

How to pipe would be different there are tips that are not common knowledge like pump the transition, hold an edge, never scrub speed. But popping in the pipe is just like.... do it. there ain't nothing to it but to do it.

yeah man, popping in the pipe is super obvious, that must be why even the best pipe skiers in the world deck out or land too low sometimes. take your wannabe hardass shit somewhere else, you've already spent more time complaining about this thread than the OP spent making it

What really helped me in the pipe was a buddy told me to keep my eyes on the sky just a little bit longer during the transition. I had the same speed, but would pop out a few feet higher immediately after continuing to keeping my eyes focused above the deck of the pipe just a little longer

When to pop is pretty easy... you want to pop when your boots hit the lip of the pipe. There's a lot more to it than that though. In the transitions you want to be strong, if you buckle then you're gonna have a bad time. Ideally you come in low across the flat bottom and extend throughout the transition to the final "pop" ie. full extension at the lip. That should keep you from decking out unless the pipe is under vert in which case you're gonna have a bad time. If you're landing too low it either means the pipe is over vert or you're saving too much of the extension for right at the lip (ie. too much pop). If that's the case you still want to extend through the transition but at the lip instead of popping you just want to hold your body position (especially knees and hips) steady to catch the tranny nice and high. Unfortunately pipes are rarely built perfect so this is a little trial and error. Just try to figure out how much pop you need on each hit while going a little smaller and work up to the large airs. As far as direction it really doesn't matter too much... more down the pipe will hold/build speed easier and more across the pipe will let you go higher. Just keep experimenting and you'll get better, the better cut that is on a pipe the easier it will be.

Just remember all that and you're gonna have a good time. ;)
