Home Made Snow Pants

So I decided after having the crotch in my Saga Pants, which I bought at the beginning of this past very short season, blow out and rip from knee cap to knee cap, I am going to make my own snow pants. And I am going to do this because no one makes HIGH QUALITY big baggy ski pants anymore. I decided to make my ski pants out of Black Denim, which I will be waterproofing with Otter Wax, and water proof canvas. I plan on making the Denim on the outside and waterproof canvas on the inside. Before I beginning sewing, I'm curious if anyone has already made their own homemade snow pants before? If so do you have any suggestions for the process of making them?

I have already bought all of the fabric and otter wax, so please don't suggest other material.

Also if you think this is a bad idea and I should suck it up and buy more Saga, I'm sorry, but I am mentally determined and financially committed to making my own snow pants.

I hear ya on the Saga pants (never washed). Crotch rips, cuffs shredded, logo pealing after 40 day season. Coat seems to hold up even with crooked stitching. I have less then 200 into set so I guess get what you pay for.

Sorry to hear about the blowout. This happens most often when people sag their pants really low. The crotch isn't meant to fit that low and when skiers legs split upon landing there isn't really much that can be done to prevent it. Best of luck in making your own pants!

Good luck man.

Only piece of advice I can give you is to build a little extra into the hip section of the pants.

It might not apply as much to baggy pants, but something to think about. I rock the skinny style and know it's pretty important for my pants to have it.

Here's some skinny pants as an example...



You'll want a little bit of bulge around the hip area (couple inches below the waist line), otherwise the pants are going to feel constrictive while trying to bend in all the ways you normally do while skiing.

No lol, bloom is really great. My stuff has survived sliding down icy, dirty runs without the slightest tear.

Personally I'd recommend investing in quality, technical pants, but I have a feeling you're looking for a style that is not offered by companies like Trew, Strafe, Flylow, Arc'teryx, Patagonia, or the many other companies that make high quality pants. Honestly, it sounds like you should get a pair of relaxed fit carhartt bibs and just wax those. Having 2 layers of heavy cotton fabrics, plus a wax treatment sounds like torture to me.

I would make sure the seams between the denim and canvas, especially around the ankle is sewed very heavy duty. Possibly even double fabric. one fault I can see possibly happening, is snow getting between the 2 layers and the pants puffing up like a pillow with snow.

I would also be sure to re waterproof the fabric as the season goes by

Good Luck I bet they will be rad as hell!

OP* breathability will be your issue. those pants will be HOT, regardless of vents... waxed fabric won't breathe. and like others said, crazy heavy, and don't forget seam tape, it won't matter how waterproof your fabric is if water gets in through the seams.

and if you don't have a pattern, I've talked with people that just took apart old gear and used that for patterns.

I'm sure you're gonna learn a lot from the whole process... if you make another pair, I suggest that you make them from actual outerwear fabric.

Yo thanks for all of the Hype and suggestions! I'll definitely be putting vents in. I do understand the heaviness of the pants will be a factor. However, Heaviness will be a trade off for fabric with a less chance of ripping, hopefully. I have already done my research on waterproofing the seams so don't worry. I am going to base my pattern off of my 2XL Saga Anomie's. I did really enjoy the fit and the pants themselves, just before they blew out.

Anyone suggesting for me to buy a different brand of ski pants, I'm sorry nowadays companies aren't making pants with the fit I like. Yes, Bloom makes good quality stuff and I do like how it looks. The pants just aren't big enough for my personal taste.

Also @Saga I'm sorry that it seems to be the case that sagging your pants increases the chances of a blow out, but it is the way I ride and feel most comfortable. So either reinforce your crotch seams on your 2XL Anomie's or lose out on my business. But as I mentioned before, you guys do have a good fit to your pants. And I did enjoy them while they lasted. So props on that.

And I'm sorry that 60ish people missed out on the Gnar Points in the Poll...Shame on you.

Props to you for wanting to make your own! If you don't have much experience sewing it may seem daunting, but no matter how the final product turns out you will learn a lot.

Ski all these brands and buy helly hansen they cost a little more than the other brands but they are by far the best pants and coat ive worn. I wear my ski pants really low and i have yet to rip mine. But ive also been a parkrat since the beginning of highschool so i land it little less splitty. Hope this helps someone looking for better pants
