BIG MOUNTAIN SKI ADVICE

Looking for some advice on getting a pair of big mountain skis. I live in CO, i'm 21, 160LBS(last time i checked) and am 5'10". Type 3+ skier, i charge hard and love hucking cliffs. i can spend $1k max. looking for a ski that allows me to ski fast and hard but will still provide some playfulness in pow. Currently skiing on 172 sir francis bacons and i find that they are a little to soft for cliffs and have a lot of chatter in the tips when i'm going fast. looking to fix that.

I second this. Amazing for soft snow big mountain type skiing here at Squaw. Lay em flat and they can plow over a school bus full of kids, but swing em sideways and they can do excactly as the same suggests...billygoat

I ski moments. Super rad ski. Pretty wide as stiff but I can still get around 5's and backie's. Definitely go with those.

I own 191 Billy Goats (2015), and they are my favorite ski ever. They make heavy, manky snow feel like cold smoke. However, I could not own them as a daily driver. Once things get firm, they dont hold up compared to similar skis. Maybe the new sidecut makes it better for firm, but the shape of the billy goats do best for deep mank, chop, crud, and mildly wet to very heavy, deep snow. They are amazing in chopped up resort conditions. So amazing, theyre dangerous. All the gapers cant ski the chop and pow piles scattered every 2 feet on the groomers after a big dump, while the billy goats just blast around in those choppy conditions at 40mph. Its a breeze. Seriously, these things will have you running over people if your not careful.

For a freestyle big mountain ski id go with a Line Mordecai, whatever the mid 180s length is for someone 5'10". According to blister gear, its stiffer than the on3p jeffrey 114, which was stiffer than the new kartels I believe. If so, the mordecai would be a sweet ski. Right now im debating jeffrey 114, line mordecai, or save money with the k2 shreditor.

However for a real big mountain ski, get a on3p wrenegades. I am special ordering a 191 wren 113 this season for charging, to go along the billy goats, 189 shreditor 112s for messing around all mtn, and on3p vicik for bumps and groomers.

Thanks for all the help and advice guys! sorry for not responding during the weekend as i was out getting my summer shred on! Ill be looking into all of the skis suggested and ill go from there! Thanks again for the help!

You should check out the 4frnt Kye 110 in 188. They are actually 114 underfoot. I just picked up a pair for $400 on backcountryfreeskier.com. If you like to charge hard and play on everything you will like these.

I agree. The gunsmoke is a sweet ski. I put about 20 days on a pair of 186s. I thought they felt really light compared to the on3p jeffrey 114, and the k2 shreditor 112, while being stiffer. The gunsmoke felt burlier, and had the best edgehold by far, yet still could be tricked and messed around with.

I dont do any crazy spins or flips, but I felt like the gunsmoke would be really good at that. They were the most predictable jib ski ive ever tried. take offs and landings felt really good on them.

K2 Shreditor 112 - Softest 5/10 flex
On3p Jeffrey 114 - 6/10 flex
Blizzard Gunsmoke - 6.5/10

The mordecai is slightly stiffer than the gunsmoke, probably a 7/10. Thats pretty surprising, and probably would make a great 1 ski quiver for advanced and expert skiers. Personally I'd rather have a pair of soft all mountain jib skis (shreditor 112s) and a really chargey big mountain ski (191 on3p wrenegade or 191 volkl katana) instead of a mix of the two in one ski.

Literally any non-park ski longer then 172 will charge harder. Surprised you can even ride these at speed, unless you weight like 100lbs.

125 seems too thick for big mountain to me. Id stick around 110 to 115 for a true all mountain ski.

Also from what i have heard about the volkl two is that is starts to fold up under variable snow, and doesnt like firmer snow too much. Never personally rode them though.

I just picked up the k2 Annex 118 from last year, the Seth pro model. I haven't skied it yet but it's pretty much a damp directional charger with camber/rocker and a tapered tip.

I already have different styles of big mountain skis, On3p Vicik and Billy Goat for firm or soft charging, and K2 Shreditor 112 for messing around. I want a super fatty because I am moving up to mt baker for la nina (hopefully it happens). Ill also be skiing whistler atleast once a week.

The reason I ask about those two skis, is because theyre super cheap online right now. I didnt wanna start a new thread, and at the same time dont mean to threadjack. The Line Sick Day 125 is under $200, I may scoop up a set of those.

This. Just check out these skis in detail and you won't really need to see any others. ON3P is well, ON3P. I don't know a ton about the gunsmokes but I've heard that they are fun skis for what you're looking for. The Bibbys tho would be my choice if you don't like ON3P. Bibbys are definitely stiffer but will drop the gnarlyest of cliffs in the pow and shred the groomers back to the lift. Check out Blister Gear Review's review on the Bibby and you'll see what I mean.
