I want to upgrade from my current setup, help

For about four years now I have been using my Canon Rebel T3i. I'm confident in my abilities of taking quality photos and doing a good job of filming, and I want to move onto the next level of cameras.

1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future?

Around $1500, a little bit of wiggle room there

2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own?

Pretty experienced, shot with full-frames, I know how to shoot on manual pretty well.

2) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc)

Tripods, steady cam, remote, too many lenses to list

4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc)

A lot of sports photos such as skiing, running and biking. Lots of astrophotography and long exposure stuff, as well as portrait and landscape too. Also a decent amount of filming, lots of skiing, biking and nature shots.

5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?

Most of the homies can run a camera pretty well already

6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc)

Mainly from a tripod

7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great.

MacBook Pro 2.5ghz processor, 128gb internal hard drive as well as a 1tb external drive.

7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout)

Final Cut Pro, I'd say that I'm probably a 7.




I don't know if a full frame is the best option or not, but I'm kinda leaning towards the idea. I'd like to go Canon or Sony. Let me know NS

First off how many lenses do you have? Are you wanting to stay with canon?

You gave a very good budget to stay under so you have quite a few options

Canon 7d mark II
Canon 80d
Panasonic Gh4.

These are the three options I think that would be best for you. In my opinion the 7d would be your best bet. The 7d offers full had video, a ridiculous continuous frame rate and some of the best noise reduction there is. The 80d is also a great camera but it's optimized a little more for filming and doesn't have the picture quality of the 7d.

These are the three options I think that would be best for you. In my opinion the 7d would be your best bet. Sony a6300 end discsussion.

The 7d mark II cant step to even the a6000 in video quality. the 80d is shit and just a rebranded 70d with a slightly better sensor. the t3i shares the same sensor all the way up to 7d. DO NOT get a panasonic if you plan on taking good pictures.
I left canon after trying out their 5d3 compared to the sony alpha line canon is like a point and shoot dad cam.

Glass for the Sony is also a hell of a lot more expensive. And there are a lot of people who disagree with you about the 5d3. He already has canon glass so it might be beneficial to him to stay in the brand. The 7d is also made for pictures. It can do full hd but that's not what it's made for, but for doing astrophotography like op said he does its dual processors are fantastic for noise reduction. It also has ultra fast frame rate for sports. And for shooting full manual the a6000 line can be a pain in the ass just because they are so small and Their interface is not as intuitive also sony's battery life sucks in comparison.

Just because you love your a6300 doesn't mean it's the best thing for anyone else

A6300 and an e mount to Ef adapter like the metabones one of you want to mainly shoot video.
S log 2, s log 3, 1080p at 120fps and 4K uhd at 24fps and 24mp still. It beats any canon in that price range

Is the Sony battery life really that bad? And idk if I'm going to keep using the glass that I have besides my 50mm, so I'm not too worried about keeping with Canon but all options are open

I guess it depends if you want to stay with canon or not. their current DSLRs aren't really competative against sony in terms of video. Arguably they take better photos though. Sony's video is on another level. if you have a lot of canon glass then there are adapter's out there to allow you to use the canon glass on the sony, but is the decreased auto focus speed going to be an issue for you (may be with action sports photography). probably won't matter in video as everything is manual though. I've also heard (but could be wrong) that Sony's eat through batteries. when you factor in the expensive adapter, as well as the batteries the sony may not be within your budget anymore. they do have the best video there is right now though.

If you want to stay with canon then it may be worth your time to wait until September (ish) if you want full frame. There are rumors that the 5d4 is going to be released sometime in August or September. as soon as that goes on sale there are going to be a lot of used 5d3s that go on the market, and you may be able to find one in your price range.

Currently 5d2s are in your price range. they have pretty decent quality, but the lack of 60 fps for video is a problem. they also have a pretty slow auto focus system, and you will have to buy cf cards as they dont have an sd slot. they do produce a great image compared to the t_i though and is a great upgrade if you can find one cheap enough

Simple answer, a6300 for $1000 plus a Metabones adapter for another $400. Best cheap setup out for video and stills and comes in under budget. Battery life isn't that bad, two batteries usually lasts me a whole day. a6300 has so many sick features. canon is dead for video unless you wanna drop like 10k or whatever on a 1dx mii or cine cams.

Not really, I can get 600 shots easy off the battery, I spent 30 bucks got Wasabi powers extra batteries and I never use more than 2 a day video and photo. FYI the Sony's processor handles noise better all the way up to 6400. 6400 looks like 800 on a canon lol.

Adapters are the way to go. But still there's great non Sony lens that are awesome like the sigma art line.

a6000/a6300 are so disproportionately robust cameras compared to others in the same price range. Canon's dead for video till they come out with an Alpha rival.
