I guess I would say "a few years ago" was back when the old homepage with the 4 columns and all the tiles was around. I felt as though I was seeing more exciting content from blue members rather then just orange and purple names, but it could just be that blue names aren't making good/popular edits anymore. I definitely don't hate the new homepage as much as I used to, but I feel theres still room for improvement (which is why I'm glad you guys have been working on nothing but improvements for ages it seems, running them by the community is cool too)

Yeah, sorry, that was one of those "It's been on my mind for a while but I don't have a complete thought about it yet, but I'm waiting for lunch to cook so I might as well write a big long rambling post about it" things
I absolutely know that its affecting the NSG experience to do what we're doing. We're focusing on the rest of the site - that's the whole idea.
I mean keep giving your feedback, its always important to listen. Every time NSG runs wild, the rest of the site complains. Every time NSG is held back, everyone in NSG complains. It always seems we have a very conflicted user base.
No shit its at my own risk, my entire livelihood is tied to this site. I think about these things a lot before making decisions.
I appreciate your response, and honestly I'd love to see the forums get back to what they were.
I'm not exactly sure about the whole concept of "NSG running wild". During the 10 plus years I've been posting I've posted in all the forums. However, NSG was always great because it was free-for-all shit talking and just discussions about anything where no one had to hide their true feelings. Funnily enough, when you let free speech reign, if creates its own unwritten order. Trolls are not a new phenomenon, if I remember correctly they were called "aliases" before.
In terms of forums though, it was always a mistake to try to alter what people could and could not say, and see and not see (within reason of course).

Politics is a dangerous beast. Can you give me more specific examples of the political moderation you're talking about? I would like to examine the exact issue.
You have to remember that politics in america currently is in one of the most toxic environments in recent history... and you guys absolutely have the right to do so - but it can really blow up a community centric around a passtime which doesn't - and shouldn't - involve politics.
The funny part that ties in a lot of this, is that the original idea behind having up/down voting on threads was to eventually turn moderation over to the community. Enough people downvote it, post goes away. Enough people upvote, post bumps up in display priority. However, when presented, this was all met with a load of hostility.
As well, we've gotten a ton of negative feedback towards the idea of completely letting the community decide what is and isn't good. I am extremely passionate about this idea, but it seems that we need to add a layer of curation on top of all of it. So - at a certain point we have to make some decisions about what this site is all about - and I'm hard pressed to say that a political forum with both sides bickering like children is a good place to be. I'd rather delete both sides of the argument and get back to threads about sticking drugs up your ass.
in the 17 years that Newschoolers has been around, we've had waves of stiff and loose moderation of NSG. It goes through a 2-3 year cycle where it goes up and down.
Honestly the biggest issue I see is that NSG got a lot less funny. Remember, I have been a member since roughly 2001 (this is my second account) and I've seen it all. I'm never ignoring you guys, but I listen to everyone - especially those who don't post in threads like this about their opinions. Newschoolers is for the revolution of skiing - its the one place that bound together the people that stood up and said "NO - I will now quit and snowboard, I demand that skiing stops sucking." Above and beyond all else, that is the single most important thing we must fight for.
If the compromise of NSG leads to better experiences around skiing, then it isn't one second of thought what we need to sacrifice. NSG and its breeding of ever-shittier attitudes has driven away industry people, pro skiers, girls, fresh young skiers and many more.
The good news is the beast doesn't need to be killed... it needs to be reborn. We need a new type of troll, a new type of villan... one that is funny 95% of the time and an over-the-line dick 5%. Right now those people are 5% funny and 95% dick, which even I will ban without thinking for a microsecond.
You are right that social media is not to blame entirely - but it did allow huge swaths of people to get sick of what the 200 people that really enjoyed fuckign with the world in NSG and leave.

Everyone's missing a big part of the equation here. Sure NS has changed and I've noticed that, there's not so many people logged in all the time anymore. Granted people can browse and not login. Certainly Social media plays a part in it.
But what I've not seen someone is that they're the ones that have changed. Maybe it's because it's not ski season, but I just don't find myself just looking for ski edits all the time anymore. I used to browse through user uploaded videos and stuff before but now I just don't. I don't think it was NS that changed that, it was just me changing. I just don't do a lot of the things I used to on NS. Like I have a lot of posts, but I don't think I post as frequently as I used to. I don't think it was NS, I think it's just me.
I have no problem with people talking trash, and making fun of each other, especially if its done in a creative way. Heck, I have 5 brothers, our favorite sport is making fun of each other. But it's done in a creative way, its entertaining, it's the sort of thing where you yell "BUUUURN" at each other after somebody drops a zinger, but nobody is going home pissed, or with their love of skiing gone. The old NSG was not that, it had its hilarious moments, but too often it devolved into just really dumb, violent, and immature trash talking. So I'm really glad the mods have taken a more active role there.
I'm only going to address a portion of what you ranted about, because I want to keep this discussion on topic - which is about NSG. I suggest you make any other post, in SG titled something like: "Why aren't more of you telling your story?" to address the content side of things. Whole other debate.

The kind where if a bunch of homies did it to each other, you'd end up with fists flying or people deciding not to hang out anymore. Those who just want to watch the world burn took over, feeling protected and empowered under the idea that they should be able to say whatever they want. It was fun for the 200 people that liked it, but awful for everyone else.
The bottom line is that we're supposed to be a community of skiers. We are the movement that saved skiing from its incessant desire to become lame as all hell get out. When I'm on a chairlift with someone - I don't give a fuck what political leanings they have... what they feel about women... what they think about guns... whatever. We're there to shred and that is it.
This site should reflect that ideal. We are skiers. We are the new movement in skiing, which needs to fight every last second or face returning to the '90s where it was all racing, winning and on a quick spiral to death by snowboarding.
So yeah, some of us lose the ability to bash someone too conservative or too liberal... but we gain friends we wouldn't otherwise have with the glue of freeskiing holding us together.

As someone who spent more than enough time as an "N word blue name" that is not how it is, or feels at all. I was a blue name who happened to also take pictures, and write stuff, enough of my peers took notice (thanks everyone on NS) that I was able to leverage something I naturally loved into something slightly bigger: becoming a purple name.
I was part of that first batch of purple names, and honestly it didn't make me feel bigger, or more important. If anything it made me more careful about what I said, it made me realize people maybe were listening and I wanted to tell stories that were worth their time.
Now I'm orange because I work full time in the ski industry. I literally am eating some bomb guac, and sipping a beer right now because I was a blue name that wanted to take pictures, became a purple name that wanted to share the stoke of skiing, and now am an orange name who wants you guys to tell your freaking stories. I eat because of that progression.
But the whole point of racism is that you're faulting someone for something they can't change. You have control of how you contribute, or don't to this site. You don't have control over the color of your skin.

I enjoy the fact that I can dedicate my career to sharing my love of the mountains and skiing, and the joy that brings me.

I honestly don't see the big deal of what color the username shows up as. The only power it has is the power you give it. I am blue and used the public features to create a post, which got upvoted by the community, and ended up on the homepage. It doesn't get much more open than that.

Sure seems like mods are trying to help people. Never got the impression there was any power trip going on. A tough job kinda like being a bar tender. But sometimes you have to cut some one off or throw someone out to help them out as well as the rest of the clientele.

The bannable offenses you are naming are all listed in the forum rules sticky in site discussion which bishop created in 2008.
It's not because of political correctness. It's not because of people who were given mod powers within the last few years. It's because using homophobic, racist or sexist slurs is the behavior of assholes and it has no place here. You can still insult people if they are being dumb. You don't need to put down entire groups of people while you do. That's low hanging fruit. If you can't get imaginitive enough to avoid using those slurs, I really dont feel bad if you get yourself banned.
If anything, people's lack of imagination is killing the forums, not the mods.

1. "Have a nice day bluename" happened when I was an Orange name. Also, it happened in gear discussion if I remember correctly. (the context is lost to me as it was something like 5 or 6 years ago)
