I haven't been coming on or posting nearly as much as I used to cause there are never good threads anymore. Also the site has lost its sense of community. A couple years ago I used to know more members from like tiny chat and PM's and even threads and now I don't know anyone.
I think that a lot of people tend to underestimate the power that tinychat once had, and the culture that emerged from in.
I'd say summer of 2013 was tinychat at its very best, it was UNCENSORED, ANYTHING GOES, NO MODS.

The real beauty of it was that no asshole mods were there. Tinychat wasnt "NSG", in tinychat you could talk about anything.
Problems with tinychat started when assholes like Gato or Pussyfooter tried to come in and mod it, and of course nobody wanted them there bcuz they are creepy as fuck like everyone knows. And thats kinda where the downfall of tinychat started

Yeah but that was without even trying. I think the other night there were less than 7 people on. Used to be rare to ever go below 20. And at night there would be 300+ instead of 40-50 people.

I remember back like 3 or 4 years ago, the length of the pages on the forums would most often be determined by the length of the online members list, and not the end of the thread as is often the case today. It was not uncommon to see 200-300 online
NSG is fucking dead and has been for quite some time. Trolls and shitty ass teenagers took over while the mods tried to make the site more "family friendly" and the real members left. What's left is so pathetic I'm loath to even call it NSG. I log in once every couple months to see if anything is going on, but, like you mentioned in the OP, there just...isn't. I used to have to refresh the front page every 2 minutes. Now, I could probably come back 4 days from now and see the same shitty threads on the front page. RIP NSG. Whoever wants to come have a pity party with me log on to nsdojo and we'll get fucked up.

Also, who the fuck is this guy? I had some great times in tinychat and none of them involved stupid ass prank calls and amateur bullshit like this. Bring back Gato, JakeAssBeatClap, Spenis, FBGM, etc. Let's throw on some music, get drunk as fuck, and talk shit.
If you look at tools like Quantcast (which are notoriously inaccurate), you might be able to say that NS has a slight dip in traffic from previous years, but maybe not even 10% less. They still get hundreds of thousands of unique visitors a month (it seems). I might guess that the issue is that younger generations don't use forums as much. You still see pros lurking and posting all the time, which has always been one of the greatest parts of NS.
I've never seen it this bad, NS has fallen off the cliff.

This is a disclaimer: Its hot and this thing that supposedly levitates in the sky called "The Sun" hurts your skin in an almost burn-like fashion. Other things I noted on my research were "females" which are quite interesting specimens but are also quite terrifying and dogs. Dogs are pretty cool.
all the older members stop coming because they've outgrown it or moved on or whatever, but there are fewer and fewer new members that join and stay frequent.
I coached a bunch of 15/16 year olds this winter and they didn't even know what a forum was. it was just non stop snapchat and instagram.
Above and beyond anything else that has hurt the forums, this is it.
Forums everywhere across the internet are in steep decline, because the younger folk who don't work desk jobs simply have ceased being interested in the experience. They want their instagram and snapchat to be the center of their social life, and I really don't see forums as they used to exist being something that ever comes back.
Forums have taken a massive hit on this site for sure, there is absolutely no denying that. Videos and News still are growing solidly, but the entrance point to the content is more through social media than browsing around a website. The kids just don't do that anymore and all the older folk got bitter and political, which contributed to an increasingly toxic environment in NSG that spread everywhere on the site.
We're working on some pretty substantial changes to the site and the philosophy behind it all for the fall, and I think that many people are going to like it.
We'll have to see. We always listen to your suggestions, so please feel free to throw them up as to what you'd like to see out of Newschoolers and every single one of them will be read and taken into account.

This won't solve the long post issue, but it may have the potential to increase actual forum usage, but an app. Everyone has a smart phone/portable mobile device that they are constantly attached to.
Sure, they may not post long-form answers/essays on certain topics, but imagine being able to post pictures easily of your newest purchase or asking a gear question while you're out at a store, looking for opinions on something. If it was media friendly, maybe there would be an uptick in people posting photos or instagram/mobile edits as soon as they take them.
I think the biggest hindrance to any online community is needing to be connected to a computer to get a sleek and easy-to-use interface. Look at Reddit, it is a message board for hundreds of thousands of things and they have numerous apps, including both official and numerous 3rd party options, that make the mobile option as pleasant as the computer option.

If I recall correctly, you guys have mentioned issues surrounding the coding of the forum and mobile options, so perhaps that is why we have yet to see anything, even a third party option.

Yes, I actually do agree with you. We are dearly in need of an app, and if there was one thing which would help this is it.
We're actually looking into two things to help with this... #1 is building our own. Resources and the same usual reasons have led this to be way behind schedule.
#2 is opening up a developer API. We've had loads of 3rd parties try to do apps, but they're all built off the same scraping method which sucks and is never going to be fast. We're looking into if we can launch this sometime before winter so that more people could push out unofficial stuff while we work on the main one.
I'm still not sure if I buy that young teenagers would want to post in a forum just because there was an app - as you said we'd probably have to look at re-inventing the forum experience if you really want to get back to the feeling of old-school NS community the way it used to be. You'd need a modern version of what that actually means, and it would have to be heavily influenced by Snapchat, Insta, Reddit, etc.

brotoor how about the video section, where original content goes to die and get buried by the same formulaic edits that are upvoted by the masses day in and day out? why are there no staff picks? frontpage content is determined by popular voting only AFAIK, and we all know how well that works on the internet
We are actually going to bring back staff picks and curated content feeds - on top of the member voted stuff. So you'll be able to see what the community is liking and you'll be able to see what staff have selected as the best.
Over this summer, we're hiring a number of people full-time. They have all come out of the community, so things are about to get pretty exciting.

I just want to point out that the most hate and toxicity on the website always comes from new groups of members before they chill a bit and become better members. For instance now it's members like Dennis_Reynolds, McNoche, etc. At one point it was members like 1337 and eheath.

I think somewhat though it's different nowadays where most social media allows you to simply block out people who are pissing you off. So it's been a generation of that type of toxicity having more harm on the general average person thinking about joining.
You our would be amazed at how many pros have been turned off because of people like this. Tonnes are still checking it but get really put off posting because of the shitheads.

Yeah like you said it's tough with so many kids not using forums anymore but a couple of things I miss that could make it feel a little more busy in here would be to add back the "friends online" feature, as well as how many guests are online. I know the guest feature hasn't been here in awhile, but it's kinda depressing when I see that there's only 50 other people online right now. Just suggestions!

There is one forum on the planet that works this way, and its 4chan. Sure, its very popular... but not something that is going to make a ski site better in the long run.
Most topical forums are heavily moderated.
What NS needs is a different story if you're trying to boost NSG vs. if you're trying to re-inforce a modern ski community.
We're basically finally completing our 5 year mission.
nWe used to have a news program, which was done by only one man. His word was god, and he decided what got highlighted and what didn't. Under that, we had a massive community - throwing content out into the world every single day. Largely ignored in favor of content about pros.
That got stale. We found ourselves writing the same stories about the same shit, and largely ignoring (on a content basis) what was happening in the community. News views fell.
The decision was made to get back to our roots - and to turn a large part of what was considered good on this site over to the community of Newschoolers. You guys get to vote, and what you vote is what is highlighted. End of story.
The ticket though, was that in this whole process, half the idea was to highlight different stories, but the other half was to seek out those who floated to the top as the best content producers.
During this time, we launched all kinds of programs, which helped incentivise (through money) those who were performing well to do more with the content that was connecting with people.
Now, we take the final step - where the absolute top of the top out of all of this have been given full-time jobs to both create content and curate the best stuff out of the voting systems we have created. We're adding a layer of creation and curation on top of what is there. As well, we're commissioning all kinds of top-tier content - decided on by these same people - from the people who have proven themselves.
So what you'll see is a top level controlled feed of content - like a traditional media source - yet its built off of a flourishing system which allows everyone both a chance to have their story make it to the top, and the chance to join the ranks at the top if they show promise.
