Not really. In summer the posts are garbage a lot but the forum still moves. Or at least it used to.

I haven't been on much the last few months. did I just look at a weird time or has it been this sluggish?

I haven't really been on a ton either, but I think its been pretty damn slow for the most part

Sounds like the 12 year olds are on to snap chat or something else that takes a lot more data. Guys in my band were talking about it last night and whatever it is they were totally going to give the little shits a beat down for eating up their shared data plan.

kids don't use forums anymore.

all the older members stop coming because they've outgrown it or moved on or whatever, but there are fewer and fewer new members that join and stay frequent.

I coached a bunch of 15/16 year olds this winter and they didn't even know what a forum was. it was just non stop snapchat and instagram.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say NS itself has contributed a huge amount to the forums being dead. They post everything ski-related on social media, so no point going to SG. Then up/downvotes have really killed discussion which has done away with pages long arguments in NSG. There really isn't anything new you can from the forums (ski related or other) that you can't get elsewhere now, where a few years ago you could get all sorts of unique content and discussion.

People are more negative and pissy these days. I've browsed through plenty of older threads and there was such a lack of hate compared to today. People posted memes, promoted content, and shit like that and nobody trashed them for it.

Why waste my time with grumpy, keyboard warrior 12 year olds when I could be water skiing, doing yard work, hiking, or hanging with real life friends?

I didn't really think about this. I think they wanted more traffic to other sections of the website, which they now have, but it's ruined the forums. Bishop has said that there are lots of people who follow NS on social media and don't even know there is a website attached to it.

Newschoolers has never been this dead. Not just NSG. Even Gear Talk. There used to be so many threads created every day with people looking for advice. It's almost 8:00PM ET, and there is only 50 members online.
I remember having to scroll for a long time to see the entire "members online" list, now it fits on one page...

I swear in the last couple of years there's been like a mass transformation. The humanoid reptilians might have something to do with it, not sure? In a few years everyone on NS will be trans.

honestly since they changed it to the latest layout I've stopped coming on a lot. I miss the 'friends online' feature the most, just makes this place seem empty

It's definitely never been this dead. Not that I remember anyway going back to about 05-06 (lurking). This was kind of a novelty back then... Usually had to access it from a laptop and the Internet was new and fun to a lot of us. Now the kids in their teens are jaded... It's just something that's been around and they're too busy snap chatting and saying "it's lit" to come on NS.

Kinda sad but whatever.





Also Gus's pics are now just gay guys commenting about how hot he is and really none of it is skiing related anymore. A total non sequitur but yeah lol

The place in general is more dead than it has been in summers past. I believe a large part of that is over-moderation. People can no longer post what they want, which is what gave this community its "feel." A number of the iconic members have been banned. If this place is sterilized then it becomes non-unique, and thus non-worthy of visitation. Just my opinion on the downward spiral.

I think it's the opposite. I think the traffic is down because the quality of conversations/topics on NSG has just gone to shit. The amount of shitty trolls on here along with political posts have just made NSG terrible. In years past at least the trolls were creative and funny....now its more like depressed political spam.

Add to that how stagnant park skiing has become, and it just shows a general slow down in NS at large. I ski around and look at how many wannabe pros are out there with ski pole go pros and DSLRs on handles and think it's just sad. Skiing isn't really about having fun anymore, it's about the appearance of having fun. If you didn't document it, it doesn't count.

Plus the devide between good park skiers and people wanting to get into the sport has never been higher. This all creates a community that is slowly falling apart. This is just the first symptoms of it.

I think it is a combination of what everyone has discussed.

Maybe the mods have a better idea, but I can't imagine the site is seeing robust growth of new members along with returners. On top of this, summer always slows NS down, to perhaps the point where people only log in for 30/40 seconds, see nothing new or of interest, and sign out again.

I do see an increase in online activity from the hours for 7 PM EST to 10 PM EST, so it could also be a timing thing.

im usually saddened by how little members there are online nowadays. i feel like 5 years ago over 100 was no surprise. nowadays im shocked to see 40+.

regardless i still come here for all of my news. id rather hear it from you annoying fucks than the swindling loonies of viacom.

NSG used to thrive in the summer.

It's understandable that people don't frequent NS as much as the past. They can get their ski media fix through other mediums like insta, FB, and even snapchat. I used to have NS open in a tab anytime I was on my laptop. Now I only log on at work because deskjob.

the biggest indicator for me is that the tinychat is fucking dead. it used to be lit with people talking, hanging out, and doing fun shit. now people only have passion for jerking off and making money.

if people would just start to care again, and the nazi mods would fuck off, then NSG would be great again. but unfortunately that isnt how it is

THe current mindset of this fuckhead younger generation is something like:

'IM going to turn my back on the sport I grew up with and gave me a lot because now I'm not a child my parents don't drive me to the hill, pay for my tickets, and send me to 3k summer ski camps which cost as much as many ski bums live on for a winter. My priorities are my shitty ass job, my bills, and my ugly bf/gf I don't have time to ski.'


Its embarrassing really.


NS is a nice connection to my ski oriented lifestyle. Even now that I have taken on a new supplementary job of selling real estate the goal is completely to bust my ass 8-9 months a year and earn enough to take it easy in the winter and take long trips. Your entitled ass kid who grew up going to windells every summer just doesn't have that resolve they wouldn't dream of getting seasonal work and saving up to ski a lot.


Is what it is. The overmoderation on here definitely doesn't help the mods are just bullies on power trips lots of cool cats been unfairly steered away. No respect to the people who keep the forums going by rotating moderators either.

What killed NSG is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and whatever I'm missing from the list. NS used to be people's go-to when browsing their phone or computer for entertainment and updates and now it's just another in a long list of sites to check.

It doesn't help that everyone on NS starting add each other on Instagram, either...just takes away people's need to go to NS further.

I used to spend the majority of my down time in the summer just sitting on NS reading through random forums. I think the explosion of social media throughout the past couple years has taken away from the NSG experience.

NS needs to stop posting full edits on facebook, they are essentially driving traffic away from their own website, why go on NS when everything good gets posted on facebook? They should just post teasers or insta edits then have a link to the NS upload.

it really sucks because NS is so unique among action sports, no other sports as big as ours have a central website where you (used to atleast) are able to communicate with the vast majority of the people in the sport. Seems to me other sports like skateboarding are so scattered around the internet theres no one place to see most of the content coming out except magazines, but then you lose the ability to publish content on your own.

NS should take advantage of their position and try and become the facebook of freeskiing, rather than just repost everything on facebook.

I honestly think an NS app would revitalize the forums. So many kids these days have their smart phones and do everything from those. It would be so much easier to pop on my phone while commuting via train and peruse the forums to kill time versus waiting for a computer or manually going to the NS mobile site every time.

someone has already addressed the problem of moving traffic from NS to facebook by sharing everything there.

but how about the stupid fucking NS snapchat, where all the big tricks at the biggest events of the year get leaked to thousands of people instantly through a shitty, low res medium so you already know everything that went down and have no incentive to watch the proper video when it comes out? nothing is hyped up anymore, there is no waiting for the bangers to come out.. you see them as they happen

or how about the video section, where original content goes to die and get buried by the same formulaic edits that are upvoted by the masses day in and day out? why are there no staff picks? frontpage content is determined by popular voting only AFAIK, and we all know how well that works on the internet

or how about cluttered mess that NSG is? why are there always like 15 "official x/y/z" threads always on the frontpage clogging the shit up?

seems like it's the end of an era. i've noticed the slow decline over the past few years too, sad to see. summer NSG was one of my favorite parts of the site. It was a shit show, but it was a fun shit show.
