HELP! Working the winter in Chile/Argentina

Apologies for posting in SG, but the Argentina/Chile regionals are next to dead.

I am an American student and planning on attending university in Valparaiso from next February to July. I would like to be able to work through the Andean winter.


Any information or help on working in or near the resorts in Argentina or Chile / applying for a temp residency or work visa would be very much appreciated.

from having a super quick read on the some of the resorts pages it appears you must be fluent in Spanish/Portuguese to be considered for a position in resort.

I'm not sure if there are independent businesses that would hire someone that isnt fluent .

You might want to check out the Teton Gravity Research forums. Lots of people there have SA experience.

I actually just got back from studying in Valparaíso and skied at a few places close to Santiago so I guess that makes me yo person.

If you have any questions about Valpo in general I'd be happy to answer them as well but I'll start with ski centers.

I can't speak to the work visa but the internet can help with that, I'm sure, as could the place you're going to work for. I skied Valle Nevado, La Parva, and Portillo. First of all it would be way easier to stay in Chile/ Chile is better than Arg anyway ;). I would HIGHLY recommend working at Portillo.

It's a requirement of workers to be able to speak both English and Spanish, but after that much time you should be speaking pretty damn well. I know there's another NS'er who's actually working there as well. I was only in Portillo for a week but you get to know the other workers and guests super well, not to mention a stellar mountain with minimal crowds.

That's just a preview to my opinions I guess so just start shooting questions at me and I'll answer them.

The pay is so bad that it's not worth your time. I got offered a job last year but it would have cost me $$ in the end to go work there. Good luck!
