What are the differences between East and West Coast people?

I grew up in New England and then I moved to the Tahoe area which has a heavy Bay Area influence. I knew East Coast people, especially people from New England were different in many ways than people from California but it took me a while to understand everything.

I was just curious what you all think are the major differences between people from New England and California?

I feel like east coast people are always in a rush, keep more to themselves and arent as nearly as friendly as people out west.


I havent spent enough time out west to make a claim about people out there but in the time i have spent people seem much more relaxed out west, kind of go with the flow mentality. Idk i like the west coast vibe a lot more than the vibez on the east coast

Growing up on the east coast (Virginia Beach) I found that people are quicker to put people down for certain things and are always in a rush. As well the older generation of the east coast is still firmly against marijuana even though it has proven medical benefits. (I was just diagnosed with Crohn's and next year I will be obtaining my med card because CBD helps rebuild the mucus wall in your stomach so I am a firm believer in legalization as it has proven medical benefits for myself and many others) After a year of living out west (Boulder) I have found that the people here are a lot more chill (and no it's not because they smoke weed all of the time, all of my friends back home in the east smoked as well) and more keen on pursuing their dreams instead of following in their parents foot steps. As well people out west seem to have a greater appreciation for life and the environment around them and want to experience it by going out and being more active.

Outlook on life in general. Most people I grew up with in the Midwest (Michigan) are a bunch of overweight miserable fucks (big boozehounds, too) and literally work their jobs every week just to get the weekends off to drink. I was surrounded by alcoholics in the metro Detroit area growing up and Im really thankful my parents got us the fuck out of there. Some of those people have literally no ambitions, like the types that graduate high school and stay in their home towns.


A lot of people are pretty happy out here, might be the whole "be kind to everyone" aspect of the Mormon religion (lol) but I think when you have tons of access to some of the worlds greatest skiing, and 5 national parks within a days drive, Its kinda hard to find shit to be mad about.

btw Utah has the worst drivers, they're not very skilled and super aggressive. here in good ole Idaho we get our licenses at 15:) lots o experience...not just in driving;)

License at 14? That's crazy. We get our permits at 14.5 and everyone drives on those alone lol.

Those Sacramentos can just go surf...if they want to ski they can move to Utah

Man this is true. Wisconsin is really bad. Like 16 out of the 20 "Drunkest cities in America" are in Wisconsin. My hometown is 2nd. When that study was released... people were actually proud. I'm embarrassed.

I will never understand why alcohol has fucked up the Midwest so much worse than the rest of the country. There are plenty of things to do besides rotting in a bar.

not to mention lots of hard drug use and depression. my home town outside of Detroit lost about 12 kids in a school year from either drug overdoses or suicide. not sure what the deal is back there at all.

I think it's because a lot of the factories have closed, been relocated or downsized. The economic downturn of the mid 2000's I think really hurt the area and people who got factory jobs right out of highschool suddenly are lost and are just trying to cope with it.

In NYC and the surrounding areas....people are constantly angry (long commutes, insane cost of living, enormous stress (many many many work in finance which is stressful in and of itself), cold winters, hot summers, to many people). Long drives to enjoy the activities that the West coasters take for granted....ex good hiking, mountains, skiing, beach, etc

Moving out of this area soon and can't wait. NYC is one of the most over rated cities in the US.

meh. no difference. there's more money here so it's easy to pretend you value the outdoors more than others and keep up a go with the flow attitude because you have a trust fund (primarily speaking for Calirado). Seems a bunch of upside down Edward Abbeys have preached the sanctity of the west while simultaneously marketing the shit out of it.

my favorite people are from rhode island. the kindest and sincerest people I have met. not sure if that means anything but they seem to be the best kind of people.

There are two parts of this country, places you can buy yuengling and places with actual mountains.

People in the SE and flyover states are generally nicer. People in the NE are pretty much all douchebags. Folks on the west coast don't like to talk to strangers.

I have felt the following in the footsteps vibe strongly on the east. Luckily this site has allowed me to see that I actually can follow my dreams and do what I want to do so thats cool

I highly doubt the people posting in this thread have lived in both.


There isn't much difference the PNW/Nor Cal and the Northeast are culturally the same. People in the northeast are a little bit more oriented with where they went to college and their career but lots of people are all about their jobs. Fewer good colleges out west. People talk normally unlike the south. Hispanics are almost always Mexican out west back east its a mix. Political splits are nearly identical.

Long drive from one to the other though.

yall mention the worst drivers and they are everywhere but Utah certainly has the worst without a doubt. this whole Mormon church thing has people thinking that god is on their side watching over them constantly so they'll pull some real dumbass reckless shit and its all good cuz the spaghetti lord will guide them no matter what. my own observations prove it because more than 50% of the time ive almost gotten smoked was by a car with a BYU sticker on it.
