I've been using a Canon t3i for the past 3 years. It's the only DSLR I've ever owned but I love it and take it nearly everywhere with me.

I think if you google around a bit you'll find many "Best DSLR under $500" reviews, it's hard to know which one you refer to. I found this for example which might be helpful:

I bought this for graduation and my photos were better than the ones we had to pay for from the "professionals" that the school contracted to take photos. The images are sharp and beautiful and I love the minute details that you won't get from a point and shoot. I have not fully learned to use it yet but I am pleased with it thus far. It also comes with a photo editing CD that while not on the photoshop level is adequate until you can figure stuff out and graduate to a better photographer. I use it mostly for photos not for videos so I can't comment on how well it shoots videos but I shot one of my son in low lighting and I was fine with the quality. Please note though that the secret to getting the best from any camera is to invest in good lense. I personally am please with the image quality from the basic lense I got with the camera and can't wait to be wowed when I upgrade. Hope this helps someone.

You can get a few decent dslrs for 500 and under. The canon SL1, T5 are both good cameras that come in at that price point. Both are solid with an 18MP sensor and will give equally good photo quality when compared to eachother. You can get a refurbished canon T5 two lens kit for just under $300 from canon directly.

The refurbished T5 is my suggestion because you get more for your money and you have money left over for additional lenses or accessories.

As for niikon; nikon has been hrting recently due to an earthquake disrupting their supply chain. Their prices reflect that but there are a few options from nikon that do necessitate consideration. A refurbished nikon d5200 would be a good option and it comes in at just under $400 from adorama.

The downside to this is that you get one less lens for a $100 more than the T5 but you do get improved image quality because of the D5200's 24mp sensor.

Being on a budget this low limits your potential for good video shooting DSLRs. If you can stretch your budget a little farther, I'd save up for a used Canon 70D as that will be the best bang for your buck under $1K.

Otherwise, I'd check out a T3i (this was my first ever DSLR) or Nikon D3300.

Sony's mirrorless models are good ones to consider especially their a6000/a6100 which both offer 1080P video in a compact package.
