Environmental Debate Over Woodwards Summer Snowmaking

Nah this is definitely something to get a bit worked up about.

That takes a ridiculous amount of energy just to get an extra few months of skiing. Keep the skiing to the 8 months you can do it naturally there and go ride a bike or something in the summer.

Not against cold weather snow making, just doing it in summer is crazy.

the article made it sound like they either get all their energy from renewable resources directly or a trade program, in which case I don't see an issue. It's not like 1st world countries don't waste energy on other useless commodities.

I do agree with the idea that in CA this is not the most sensible idea, but at the same time resorts and businesses need to generate income some how. Also looking at videos of it running in heat it kinda looks pathetic compared to a normal snow gun but I guess it's impressive that in can even make snow in the summer.

As long as it's only boreal that sticks to this I don't really see a problem. Yeah it may be bad for the environment but in reality it's only a miniscule percentage of emissions. We might even be able to ski year round if everyone went vegan which is a much bigger issue than one snowmaker.

I dont get why carbon offsetting is a plausible excuse. I mean youre still creating the emissions but somehow because you have a magic permit that says its ok then suddenly everyone's like "well that seems fine then"

I mean for 4 months of the year, I'm sure people can stand not skiing on snow. Hell, any skiers in that area have the rest of Woodwards facilities which are fucking awesome as it is

Idk, just seems pretty unnecessary and other resorts are gonna catch on and use it which won't help anyone

I think the funniest part about this though was that Boreal announced this the day after the water restrictions were removed.

I don't think Woodward is down to drop the mula for that, I mean they have it but they already have an 8 month season, ramps that go into foam pits and airbags, plus a sick ass tramp and skating facility

I remember reading a few articles last year about how water was almost being rationed out due to the scarcity of it last year in California in some areas, so making snow in the middle of june does seem kind of retarded. I know the state is massive and it probably barely even puts a little knick into the water supply as a whole but id probably resort to more conservative/sustainable practices after nearly running out of water in the past few years. Not like outraged as some people "Appear" to be but I can see where people are mad for sure. I get kind of annoyed when I see the farmers aroud here water their crops for days on end after streaks of decent rainfall.

the water used goes straight back into the watershed when the snow melts rather then into the sewers and out to sea in the cities
