Oil change question

So, long story short, I bought a new car recently, due for an oil change so I changed it as I have for every other oil change on every car I have owned. Owners manual calls for 6qts of 5w20 including a new filter. I put the 5qt jug in and let it settle, ran the engine to drive to that auto parts store to get the last qt and got home and let it sit 5 minutes. Checked the dipstick and it is about double over the full line. I let it sit longer with the same results.
So, I wondered if I maybe didn't drain it all. I measured 6qts of dirty oil in my drain pan (which was empty to start). So, it fully drained.
Am I retarded at using my dipstick? Anyone seen something like this before?

Obviously the physics say I'm nuts. I'm more or less wondering if:
A: the wrong dipstick it in my car and is too long and goes in deeper that it should (teed that one up for you)
B: the dealer put too much oil in the car and when I drained 6qts out, there really was 7 or 8 in there to start and I in fact didn't drain everything (though I kept the drain plug and filter off until oil stopped). Dealers overfill often according to internet searches I saw.

Did you leave it open until no more oil came out... i normally let it sit for a couple minutes before I put the plug back in the pan

check in the morning. if it really is double over the top line then take some out. too much oil can be quite damaging.

although first see if you can look up the dipstick length for your vehicle and measure yours. it's definitely possible someone switched it out.

Same thing happened to my friend. Turns out it was a dip stick from a different car lol. So i would take it to a dealership just to be safe.

I say drive around a little bit, and then check again if your op is correct and it does take 6qt..

did you drain about 6qt from it?

Could be a different dipstick, could be the previous owner/dealer put in too much oil. Also, your oil filter holds oil as well so if you didn't replace that that can lead to a higher amount in the motor, but certainly not double. I'd also drain it down to the normal amount, too much oil isnt good for the seals...

Went to the dealership and found that there is supposed to be a plastic/rubber piece at the top of the spout that holds the dipstick up higher and is a seal. Quick fix, now my oil level reads normal.

Many cars from this era have an oil generator in the engine and are only supposed to be filled during emergencies. Filling your engine with oil while the producer is working properly can blow your engine. Drain all the oil out and then take it on a long drive to let the oil producer make the correct amount of oil for your engine.
