No doubt that transworld, snowboarder magazine and thrasher re light years ahead of any of the current print ski media

more importantly why should we rely on freeskier to do that when we can on NS

the framework is there, its just nobody except purple names use the news section.

honestly its up to every skier. if people still had subscriptions to freeskier then they would do more but people just use the internet now to stay up to date on what happening in the industry

I was recently thinking the same thing. The Road Trip Challenge was on a much smaller scale and far too PG, KOTR is definitely more entertaining for that sort of content. As said above, NS can and hopefully will eventually be able to be a Thrasher type of entity within freeskiing. Nobody supports Freeskier magazine anymore because the exact same content is online for free

It's no secret that activity on NS/the overall popularity of NS isn't what it once was. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat have helped NS reach a broader audience, but unfortunately the days when hundreds of people would be online contributing to the forums seem to be gone.

So how does NS stay relevant and grow? The answers are above. NS is 100% capable of being the premiere outlet in skiing. It probably already is, but it needs to become official. This will require NS to create/host some events, have a larger presence in winte sports in general, sponsor riders, etc.

Obviously it's easier said than done. Idk, maybe Mr. Bishop needs to stop drinking so much and focus on growing this shit, or maybe it's on us to give money and support when needed. I would just love to see NS grow and become the transworld of skiing

I really dig what you guys have been doing so far from the coverage of events on snap, to finally opening the store (hopefully more apparel soon but I'm just hyped I finally have something NS to wear around campus), and am hyped on what is to come with the next dew tour because I will be doing my best to attend! Keep up the great work!

What makes NS different from Transworld, Snowboarder, Yobeat, ect., is that NS allows users to upload videos where as the other sites select videos from people's submissions. This makes them more exclusive, but takes away from the idea that any random kid can make an edit and grow from to the front page.

Personally, I think that NS is the main outlet for skiing and is doing pretty good job so far.

Been preaching this shit for year. I spoke to Henrik Lampert at Freeskier at one of the Photo Shootout parties and he said they have some big things coming. Well at least I hope.

I've got a few ideas that could definitely change content in skiing. Been lucky enough to speak to some pros in the industry (Matt Walker, Lesh, Wesson, Doug Bishop, Ahmet,) and pitch them the idea but unfortunately I get the same answer. If it wont make money than no company or media outlet will take it on.

Just got to do it myself.

Freeskier has sucked since they started. Back then, they tried to have a GQ/Maxim/Douchebag meets skiing thing going on, and probably still do. No one should look at Freeskier anything. Downdays is kind of like Thrasher/Transworld, but NS is better.

Unrelated: A lot of people (including me) have wished for years that NS would improve the video search feature so it sorts the videos in some logical fashion. That would make the site a lot better, and it couldn't be that hard.

There's loads still in the works, but if you're looking from the outside you can probably start to see some of the pieces coming together.

We've been running hard on the open philosophy for a few years now. One of the main theories behind that was that Ski Media had become a very closed club of a few people with roughly the same opinions being recycled over and over. We wanted to cast out a massive net to do our best to find some of the best undiscovered talent that was out there, and assist both them and everyone else with a platform to publish on.

Thoughout the years of us doing that, we've discovered some incredible talent. Evan Heath, Jamie Walter, Sam Turner, Cy Whitling, Adam Spensley, Matt Sklar, Matt Kretzchmar, Gavin Rudy, Erica Aarons and Erika Dhalby... countless others who have come through the system and proven to be the next generation of ski media.

The next step in this process is to provide curated editorial feeds on top of our community system which gives the best of these people a proper outlet, and to provide them with either jobs or solid freelance contracts which will allow for more predictable flows of Quality Media. I thought this would happen a little faster than it did, which is my bad - but you can see it happening.

So next year you're going to see a huge amount of highly produced professional level content on top of our open system. We'll always keep the open system open, because we want to always allow that next generation to have a shot at working their way up. However, you guys will have feeds which are heavily curated, so you can get back to trusting everything will be top notch quality. I had really hoped that the voting systems would do this so we all decided together... but I've realized that we've picked the people together who fit our vision of skiing, and they need to be the final curators of what goes out into the world.

In terms of events... look at what has happened over the last two years. We've grown Tell-A-Friend Tour to 22 stops between the UK and US, which brings professional skiers to resorts never before imagining them coming for the ski day of your life. We've taken over the Dew Tour, which will be happening in full force in December 2016 - and this year though it wasn't highly publicized yet - we had a group of about 8 skiers attending Snowboarder Magazine Superpark... which is the same company as us.

Remember as well - Transworld snowboarding and Snowboarder are the exact same company. So I'm constantly meeting with those crews, sharing ideas and looking for inspiration of what is next for Newschoolers.

The last two years have been highly transitional for media in absolutely every industry. Social Media has exploded into the space, and dramatically changed how everyone interacts. This affected us extremely well in some areas and hurt us in others. All of that ends up that its time to really get the final pieces of this puzzle together.

Other media are great at what they do, but Newschoolers is and always has been dedicated with extreme passion to the core skier. We have gone about that by empowering everyone to speak their words, and now that we have an insanely good team in place, we're going to focus that message in so that every skier who decides they want to add some style to their day and play on the mountain will look to Newschoolers for inspiration.

What can you do to help? Keep throwing feedback at us, read articles, share them, buy some merch, uninstall ad block, add content to the site, start a conversation - keep the momentum going and just watch out for the content drop that is going to hit in the fall.

Should be a fun ride for us all to be on together. :)

I am curious as to what Freeskier Magazine has been up to though.....I have been a lot less impressed with their efforts of late. I live in Summit and hear about the ski testing each year, and it seems like a complete joke. I know the people that get chosen to test skis, and they are by no means putting the skis to the test and riding them to the fullest. The girls are often times beginner skiers and barely know what they're doing riding park (not trying to call people out, just a blatant observation).

I used to look up to those ski reviews growing up and would religiously read the magazine. Now I just feel as though their ranks have been infiltrated by joeys and chads that are abusing the free hookups and perks of being affiliated with Freeskier.

I fucking love Newschoolers.

NS easily is the best platform to showcase freeskiing. The magazine industry is a dying industry anyways. If NS could bridge the gap to more mainstream showcasing ex magazine, radio show, tv show, etc could be HUGE for the sport

Freeskier is ok...have some decent videos from time to time and some good articles here and there but it just is about ads. The magazine isn't that good.

Powder is a MUCH better magazine with actually interesting and thoughtful well wrote out articles.

100%. I love magazines and prefer reading hard pages over the internet anyday of the week. Still actively subscribe to so many mags.

what happened to that NS magazine

Somehow everyone in this thread is forgetting that NS just took over the Dew Tour. The most freeskiing entity in freeskiing just took over one of the main competitions that gets nationally (globally?) televised. That's about to be so sick, giving power back to the people. NS is freeskiing like no one else. Think about it. If it's happened, there's a record of it on here. You can find top pros' first edits on here from over a decade ago. Sure, the forums are kinda done because they've become so popular that no one knows anyone anymore, and because social media has replaced that. We used to need this site to find others like us (I felt this way when I joined in high school) but now I regularly see people wearing Saga shirts or Armada hats and I no longer feel compelled to talk to them because I already know too fuckin many skiers haha. It's weird to feel like an OG at 22, but I kind of am because I got involved a couple years before things really got big.
We're not as much of a fringe sport anymore, and NS is adapting, and doing a pretty damn good job of it. Remember when Video of the Day used to be the only dope edit of the day and wasn't even consistent in that? Now there's multiple dope edits every day on the front page of all kinds. Why? Because NS built itself to be that way and it's working.

To be clear, our parent company acquired the media partner contract for the dew tour, NS will be involved but we personally aren't running the dew tour. TEN has a dedicated events team and will be handling 95% of the work, but we will be involved to a point.

Being an ex snowboarder I came to newschoolers 2 years ago and was absolutely blown away with how well this website functions and the community that is involved is nuts. This thread came at an awesome time, with wcs dropping edits this year I am seeing boarders Sharing the videos and supporting the movement. Newschoolers is blowing up and honestly I can see the snowboard forum coming back to life. Countless of my boards buddies bitch daily about how there is not a single snowboard website to have discussions, seewhat is happening behind the scenes, connect with others, or post your own content other than yobeat which is a huge joke in itself. Shit half of them are following ns on fb or insta and asking me if I saw an edit or thread. That should be saying something about the growth and speed that ns is growing if it is now once again drawing snowboarders into the scene. I think that with thecontinued work of the ns staff and all of us as a community that ns will outrun any media platform. I can personally say that I love what ns is. It has changed my outlook on many things, met cool people and you get a much closer look at theindustry more so than any other action sport hands down.

Some good expansion for NS the company...they could just replicate their platform into the snowboard scene. Hire a 2nd level pro with good connects to do something similar. Ultimately the only reason NS thrives is because its such a good community that connects skiers around the world and is constantly being updated with awesome video, content, etc
