I am the first to admit that Jon's vlogs are a little self absorbed but who the fuck really takes issue with him fanging around in that car by pulling the climate change card. What a wanker.

"Most rich people don't work for their money, they just exploit the poor" is a statement of pure speculation with zero basis in facts. I dunno about the uber rich, but people like doctors, dentists, engineers, and even most wealthy business owners that most people would consider rich had to work their asses off to get there. Also these people outnumber the multi-billionaires 1000 to 1. so I would say that most rich people got their off their own hard work.

VinnieFI think what normally gets people who are less wealthy is that a large portion of those who are rich are rich off the backs of those who are poor.

And a huge portion of them didn't work their way up from the bottom rungs of society, the vast majority are born into the upper class and are fortunate enough to afford an expensive business degree or what have you. Then they get really rich off those doing the backbreaking labour and who are getting paid peanuts while they've never had to lift a hammer in their lives.

That's why people resent them. Especially then when the poor labourers see the money they are making for the rich be put into frivolous luxuries instead of back into the people who make them rich.


Obviously this is not always the case, but it's the case a lot of the time.

KevskiI think there's just something annoying about watching someone who has acquired more wealth than any of us will acquire and just spend it all on things that don't matter and don't improve the lives of anyone else.
It kind of exposes the shittiness of a person when they have all the power to make things better for others and choose to fuck around and waste it on themselves.


I'm curious as to what you do to improve the lives of others ?

Read what I wrote again. I said nothing about everyone rich inherited their wealth. I said that those who are rich are far more likely to come from a well to do family that can afford to put them through expensive education that gives them the business degree or what have you that they're then able to enter a workplace already at a high level and skip over the entry level blue collar jobs that many people who resent them work all their lives.

Go look it up.

And I said nothing to say rich don't work hard. It's that they don't do and rarely have done the nitty gritty.

I guess a half decent analogy is how people who become officers right out of military college aren't respected as much by the average soldier as those who worked their way up through the ranks. (or so I'm told by my friends in the army). They just come along at an administrative level rather than starting as a janitor. Regardless of whether they busted their ass to pay for military school and work through it or not, they still won't get thesame respect from the lower ranks.

Haha. Skiing as it is today is inherently shitty for the environment. Running the lifts, cats, all the cars driving up to the hill, and everything takes up an insane amount of energy and causes a shitload of emissions. unless you just tour everywhere you can't bitch about this.

Actually there is a lot of research to suggest that the rich are at a great advantage of earning more money with lesser qualifications. Give this a read, there's a lot of similar articles as well and it may change your opinion. Off course they still work really hard and I'm not discrediting that, but there is a gap between the rich and the poor which really should be addressed.

Most western cultures love money. Look at the watches, cars, houses and everything else that people aspire to. The price of your objects in western culture literally symbolizes your success. And of all countries I'm sorry but the U.S. Leads on that front. Your republican presidential candidate is a billionaire TV star with no previous political experience for goodness sake.

There's many religions/cultures where flamboyance is looked down upon, but current popular American culture definitely isn't one of them.

I see what you mean but what about the snow cats up there "ripping around" actually causing an impact by building massive jumps and compacting the snow every day? Personally I think what he did is awesome and I think he will open up a lot more people's Eyes to freeskiing by getting their attention with stuff like this.

Yeah, there's always an inherent disconnect whenever I see a POW athlete post about how they're out campaigning for the earth, when the rest of their feed is travel shots.

I think it's a much bigger conversation that the ski industry has been sweeping under the rug for too long.

I agree, it seems like a lot of pro skiers do this. One skier that comes to mind made a typical "It's time to change things up" Earth Day instagram post last season, and then posts about his 1500 mile drive to AK this season. It's not necessary to name him as 90% pro skiers travel a ton and he might as well be anyone.

And expanding to skiing as a sport, people have to realize our sport is very damaging to the environment. Hundreds of thousands of tourists fly to visit resorts, 1 high speed quad chairlift uses enough electricity to power 175 U.S. homes, snowmaking uses a surprisingly high amount of electricity and has immediate negative effects on ecosystems, etc.

Yeah but if you eat an artichoke for dinner and unplug your macbook from the wall when you're not using it, you offset most of that.

Artichokes use up less water per ounce than your average African villager without a functioning well.


This brings up a good point, actually. Airplanes are the biggest polluters out there and yet we spend BILLIONS a year sending aid by airplanes to people living in deserts. I think its about time we stop killing mother Earth because we're trying to prolong the inevitable deaths of people we will never see outside a Sarah McLachlan music video.

You are exactly right. If we could move those villagers to Jacob's chalet in Chamonix, or his island getaway in Bali or his condo in urban Stockholm, maybe we could finally put a stop to all of the emissions used up by all those air drops. I hope someday we can all love this planet the way Jacob does.

I think we should push ski areas to donate a percentage of pass sales to carbon offsetting charities like Cool Earth. https://rhythmsnowsports.bamboohr.co.uk/jobs/

A rental shop i worked for gives 1% of total profits to cool earth as a way of reducing the carbon footprint of the business. If was saw whole mountains doing this i think it'd be a really positive step in making skiing a greener sport.

combine that with greater use of renewable energy to power lifts and services and i think we'd be onto something

I have always found it extremely disingenuous of pro skiers (or certain celebrities) to get on their high horse about climate change. So driving a sports car is not alright, but participating in perhaps the most carbon intensive sport ever is alright? These guys fly all over the world, go heli skiing, go through dozens of pairs of skis a year and then have the guts to try and point a finger at someone else's consumption?

I'm a landscape architect who designs parks and public spaces that bring people and communities together, rehabilitate ecology, and enable more sustainable day to day choices.

I'm not ending world hunger, but my career is dedicated to making the world a better place. I respect those who use their wealth in a way that enriches the lives of others (eg. Elon Musk) more than those who use it purely for personal gain (eg. Trump). Straight forward, no?

What he said is that culturally the states looks down upon people who show off their wealth, which isn't true. If Everyone wants those things, but are mad at the people who have them, that's actually just jealousy, not a cultural bias towards modesty.

In terms of fuel economy per passenger, planes are actually much more efficient than cars. A 737-800 gets about 110mpg per passenger (if the plane is full).
A 747 gets about 100mpg per passenger.

That's per passenger. which means if everybody drove the same distance in a seperate car than yes the plane gets better mileage car, but by the same measure a greyhound gets far better mileage than a Jet. Jets also burn shitty fuel that is not nearly as refined as other fuels and produce far more emissions than modern ICE's.

Re: irrelevance, i wouldnt say he's irrelevant but in the eyes of NS he's sort of fallen off the map-- he isn't doing jumps and rails and stuff quite as much and is doing some sick touring etc stuff it looks like.. i havent paid attention but i think that's the case. no denying he's a dirt nasty skier

but i have to say he has earned the reputation of being a little bit whiney sometimes. examples that come to mind are when he posted some big diatribe about god knows what when he **quit NS**, he called out jon brogan that time, and this...

im sure he's a chill dude and we all whine and say stupid shit sometimes but he's a pro skier and he does it online so he can't be too surprised that people react to it, haha

No doubt, jets aren't even close to perfect by any means but there are a lot of factors besides overall fuel efficiency/emissions too. One thing planes have going for them is a much longer lifespan and efficient utilization. The company I work for flies planes that are between 30-70 years old.

Do you happen to have any good sources for emissions of gas turbines vs ICEs? I did a quick google search but couldn't find much info.

That is true they do last a lot longer, I would guess that the amount of $$$ money spent on maintenance (and for good reason LOL) is the reason that aircraft last so long. If people took better care of their cars and if it made financial sense to keep pumping money into them then cars would last longer as well.

I don't have any good sources for emissions just what I can remember reading.

Only if you live an existence defined by consuming and don't provide anything back. The beauty of the human condition is that we also have the ability to restore and give back to the environment, with positive impact well beyond our own personal emissions and consumption. The C02 you exhale helps plants survive anyways.
