Hey NS,
I'm looking at new computer setups going into college. I've got my trusty mid 2012 Macbook Pro with 16gb of ram, 2750gb of storage, and a 2.9ghz i7 processor, it is a beast when it comes to editing, but the battery life absolutely sucks and it is terrible for day to day portable use.
What do you have? What do you want to get? Can be for photo/video editing, or just for general use.
Bought an early 2015 1.6 i5 Macbook Air with 4GB ram for general use and day to day photo/video editing. I know the specs aren't great but I bought it for the price point haha. And honestly so far I have had 0 problems with it. But I just thought I would just put my input in because it has awesome all day battery life

How long does your battery last? Mine lasts 2 hours if i am using it right after I unplug it, but if I leave it in my backpack for an hour and then go to use it, it is genarally at 75%. It is a great workstation style computer, but for anything where i need to use it for more than an hour or so without charging, it just doesn't last.

Your computer is pretty old so I would assume the battery is shit.
The newer MBs have much better batteries, but even the high end MBPs probably only get 4-5 hours of normal useage, obviously less when you're doing intensive work.
I have a 2013 MB air, i7 1.9ghz, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd. It works great for general use (internet, email, etc) and does an okay job editing, good enough to cut together basic edits and label footage/review footage, it chokes on anything higher than 1080p. Battery life is fantastic, probably 8-9 hours of normal use, still holding up pretty good to this day, even though it's usually plugged in.
At home im using a 3 year old (ish) desktop with a 3.4 ghz i7, 32gb of ram and a gtx 600, 128gb ssd and 1tb internal. This baby runs pretty well, it was still kind of budget when it was first purchased and I started using it about 6 months ago, she runs great for any sort of editing work I need to do. Its not a beast, but its plenty to get the job done.
I have leaned towards a desktop setup pretty hard, mostly because a powerful laptop is $3000 and a decent desktop is $1000. The mb air for the road works great, the only reason to have a beast laptop is if you do all of you work on the road.

Thanks for the wisdom!
Yeah the battery is pretty bad, likely in part due to the two spinning drives, but age is certainly a factor.
Would you suggest going the pimped out MB Air route over a MB Pro?
When I upgrade, should I keep my current MBP as the editing machine?
Sorry for all the questions, but you seem to be the most reliable person on here when it comes to fielding questions.

Well it all kind of depends on your budget and what you need it for ya know? No point having two laptops really, a desktop/MB air or low end mbp is the best option IMO.
I mean if you have all the cash in the world, a super pimp mbp and desktop would be ideal.

This is true, but the resale for older macbooks is almost abysmal, especially when you have them tuned to your liking.
Considering I don't have all the money in the world, I think I'll probably keep the editing machine, and cop a mid range Air for college, because either way I am going to need something to edit on and the Air's just aren't made for that.
For my mobile workstation I was lucky enough to snag a few lenovo's from my dad's work that they didn't need anymore. I've got a i7 6700hq, 24gb of ram, it only has 250gb but I don't keep my work internally. They don't have dedicated graphics cards so I might get a graphics amplifier.

I'm sure it's because you just have an old battery haha, I think eheath hit the nail on the head already. But mine lasts a full day, like 8 or 9 hours of off and on use. And the battery doesn't really drain when it's shut. It's definitely an awesome computer, and if you have the extra money to upgrade some hardware I would definitely recommend it!
