Well, the season hasn't even ended for some lucky few out in CO and UT, but DPS has already teased us with a picture of a new pair of skis. Looks VERY different than what they normally produce.

Yeah it seems him, Cody, and a few others still rock the boots they built at Salomon a few years back.

I wonder if Salomon will actually take into consideration their mods for these changes.

It seems a lot of athletes are doing them.

Is it going to be as burly as the 106? I'm thinking of copping some 106's but I'll wait if y'all are making a badass update.

Part of making a light boot is plastic selection, and whatever blend/version they used in the Freetour was getting dented more easily than normal. If you check out the Blister review of it, you'll see what I mean.

Sort of disappointing, but still cool (if your into that sort of thing). I was really hoping for an updated kingpin with elastic travel in the toe, kind of like the Tecton.

Just got offered a trade, my kingpins for a set of 2017 Pinnacle 118s w/ dukes. Im keen to go for it, but havent been on a k2 since the PE's came out. Not to hijack the thread, but anyone got any insight on how they ski?

Im pretty disappointed in it really. Why would they not put a toe lug on that boot, becuase they only want you using there bindings. But making it so you cant use it in alpine bindings or more crucially the shift means it lacks that apeal as a 1 boot or freeride boot. Here in Whistler loads of people just use one boot for touring and the hill and these can not be it. Shame really as im sure it has some cool other features.

Fair concerns. As with any boot I would caution against anyone putting any real faith in stated ROM and stated last. The numbers they throw around are total bullshit.

This is supposed to be postioned between the Vulcan and the TLT series in Dynafits line. I'm willing to bet the S/Lab will ski better but the pro tour will walk better.

I've got a wide foot and a high instep. It's part of the reason I became a boot-fitter. The fit could appeal to me but what I'm really interested in is a boot that's minimalistic, with the Dynafit shark nose design, with the Scarpa in-step strap, that skis better than the TLT series for summer ski mountaineering missions. I got pretty sick of being in my Vulcans/Beast Carbons for overnight steep skiing missions this last spring/summer but I can't get get over the the TLT series skis.

It'd be nice to have something in between the two.

As far as price goes, you'll definitely end up paying the Dynafit tax. If I were buying retail that alone would be enough to turn me off of most of their products.

Same. Not impressed. Also, the fit is wack and it seems like a very weird boot for specific feet. I don't think it will do too well when it comes out.

Have you been in it?

Whats the instep height like. How progressive does the flex feel?

I don't think Dynafit is trying to compete in the one boot quiver market. Which, I think is probably a smart call.

The average Dynafit consumer isn't the ski bum trying to make it all happen on minimal money and gear. Even if they did stick a toe lug on this boot I would point people to 6 other options for a 1 boot quiver before I showed them anything from Dynafit.

I've read through that.

I'm biased as I've got a foot like a brick that's been in a ski boot for 15 years. A truly wide shell hat I can through custom liner in for ankle retention is really appealing to me and a surprising amount of people I've met over the years.

Yeah. You said it right above....i was hoping for a powerful all mountain boot. That's not what it is.....probably smart by dynafit to not try to compete with the freetour/hawx/everything dominating right now. Still...not what I was hoping for

Definitely. They dipped their toes that way with the beast/beat carbon but it just doesn't stand up to something like the Lange Freetour (sans it's durability issues)

Does it tour better? Yes. Slightly. But it's still no where near a TLT, Backland, or even the Maestrale RS.

Does it ski better? Absolutely not.

I'd still pick the S/Lab over the anything Dynafit has dreamed up over the last few years if I was forced to have a single boot.

With that being said, I really think you should beg, steal, and/or commit felony fraud to have a dedicated boot/binding setup if you're anything close to serious about human powered skiing.

Seems to me that our beloved sport of skiing is so niche, that companies like dynafit arent obligated (or even wanting) to do this sort of thing. Unlike other industries, lets use the bike industry as an example, when the ski market develops demands not every ski company holds that demand within their scope. Bike analogy: all of the sudden there's demand for a new tire (650b, plus size, 9er, etc) or a new standard emerges, and every manufacturer needs to have it in their lineup. BUT when demand emerges for a one boot to do-it-all, dynafit seems to say, "thats not what we are doing here" and leaves it to the other guys.

Not sure if I'm articulating myself perfectly here, but I hope you get what I mean.

I completely agree.

If I were the big swinging dick at Dynafit I'd have a negative interest in marketing a crossover boot when the S/Lab and the Freetour beat them to market by multiple years.

Where Dynafit is expanding their offerings is the fitness uphilling crowd. Not my cup of tea but from a business stand point is a smart move. That segment of the market hasn't really been marketed to exclusively. And it's exploding.

I think actually unless you are doing a load of multi day hut trips you should be ok with one boot to do it all. Who wants to buy twice if you dont have too? The Lupos, XTD and pinnacles of the boot world have meant the one boot to do it all is now a reality

I agree with this. For most people a crossover boot is fine Peach....ever tried the hawx XTD? The boot is insane. I have no quarrels doing long trips with it...huge range of movement and super light....and a day at Squaw is more within its ability inbounds. The crossover boots are getting better and better.

I really used to be in that thought camp. And honestly the options have never been better than they are now. We're close to a no-compromise boot but we're just not there yet.

If I'm doing more than 3K vertical in a day (which is nearly everyday in the BC for most ski-tourists in my neck of the woods) I don't want the extra weight and restricted ROM of an alpine style boot with a walk mode and tech fittings.

I have. I'm a big fan, actually.

The pair I tried weren't mine to keep. If they were I feel confident that I could've solved some of the fit issues I was having and been reasonably happy in it for 90% of the skiing I do.


Edit caveat:

I haven't skied it in alpine bindings. Only Radicat FT's. I'm reluctant to believe it would have the same suspension and power transfer as my RX 130's in a pair of pivots only because of its reduced mass. But, I haven't had the chance to test it. So I have no evidence to back up that assumption.

I know Cy has spent some time in it for Blister. I'd be interested to hear his thoughts on wether or not we've reached the one-boot-quiver era yet.
