River surfing?

Any of you river surf?

I'm considering buying/making a board for River surfing. There's a few waves/rivers around my hometown and I'll be moving to Reno in the fall.

Any of you surf down in Reno?

What are some good boards?

I haven't myself but a lot do it here in Ottawa. Dave Crichton (pipe master extraordinaire) surfs them here and made the news last year doing it.

Im thinking of buying a standup paddle board. I'd guess those are good for this.


What I really want to get into is kite surfing but its a lot of $, requires a good amount of wind, and looks pretty hard.

I surf pretty much every day when I'm home in california, i tried river surfing once in boise. none if it made sense, it was hard as fuck and nothing like normal surfing. I couldnt stand up on the standing wave

Nope, the more foam you have in your board the harder standing waves are. I use a board I use to ride when I was 13 for when the boys let out river mouths.

Me and my buddy from the team are gunna build up a wave this summer on the truckee and try to surf it. Should be dope haha

Also the coast is like 3 hours away....I'm taking a few trips over this summer.

paddleboards are sick if you want to go down the river over rapids and shit, but not if you're trying to surf anything under 8' tall, They are still sick, I just don't think it's what you're looking for. go something shorter as said down before.

How do you build a wave? Sounds sick, do you have to use concrete? I would be interested in building one on the river behind my house, although it's kindof sandy/muddy, so i imagine building anything in it would be a challenge.

And yeah to build a wave you just drop big rocks or concrete slabs on a faster moving River and it creates a wave. Pretty cool stuff

Yeah I mean the water does need to be moving fast and all the slabs need to line up and there needs to be somewhat deep as well.

There's a wave about 40 minutes from where I live that's man made, I've surfed it on a kayak and body boarded it but I want to surf it.

I might try to make a board actually, seems like a fun project.

Bought mine at a surf shop used for 70 bucks lol. Been doing me good since though!

Not sure what my buddy has...he sent me a pic but I cant remember. His is actually a nice surf board though lol.

I know a couple of guys who have done that. both out of foam and out of wood. They seemed to have a relatively easy time with good results. Post pics on here if you do.

I think a lot of people who make river surfboards design them specifically for the wave it'll be used on. I'd imagine the wave is relatively consistent. So it really depends on if it's a steep of more drawn out wave in terms of board type. I think most of them are quite short but other than that it depends on the wave. Since the wave is probably the same all the time you've got a nice chance to tailor your equipment.

There is a small wave on a river like 2 minutes from my house that i have always wanted to surf, just as a back up wave when lake erie dies down and goes flat for a good portion of the summer. But surfing this little wave seems a lot harder and different than any normal wave in the ocean/great lake, im just going to have to sack up and try it someday haha

Does anyone know of a good website to buy used surfboards? I'm in Idaho so I don't really know...

Definitely don't build your own wave. It's super illegal and something that they will definitely prosecute you for. You would have to own the land and then get a bunch of permits for it to be ok.

Just go to your local whitewater shop and they will fill you in on good waves in the area.

It's illegal to put rocks in rivers now?

I mean if they went all out and built a whitewater park then yeah it would be bad but building a wave isn't bad at all. There's a wave close to me that was built.

Yes. Especially if you don't own the land. In Utah you then need a stream alteration permit at the least. If it's on federal land (i.e. forest service, blm, ect.) it an even bigger deal.

Rivers have been fucked with enough by people. leave them alone and go find a wave that's already in place.

Yeah I'll look for natural waves, but honestly putting rocks in a river isn't fucking with a river. Fish can still swim and there's no harmful chemicals.

Good on you. you would be surprised how much damage you can do to aquatic habitat with a few rocks. certain rivers are closed in the spring in utah because fisherman walking on in the riverbed destroying the fish larvae. so yeah a few rocks can fuck with a river.

Alright, alright. I'll agree with you that it can have harm on some rivers. I'm just used to the portneuf lol. We have pollution problems, not rock problems.

sorry to get on you about it. i work in river protection as a career and i'm going to law school for it next year so it's kind of my thing.

the portneuf seems pretty cool. i want to kayak the section above lava hot springs. it supposed to be class III/ easy IV but with a bunch of small water falls
