Pay for photos of you?

If someone came and snapped professional photos in your local park, would you be willing to pay for a sick photo of you? Like the Roller coaster photos they do in theme parks and try to sell for like $20 or something stupid.

Say $5 for the first high quality digital copy and $2 for each other photo you like after that?

I know many people shred alone or don't have the opportunity to get photos.

I think this is a great idea, the biggest problem is a mountain owned by a large corporation has deals with photog companies for taking photos around the mountain, etc. If they found out you were doing such thing they might butt fuck you hard.

Thanks, it's been tumbling through my head for a while now, nice to get a professionals opinion. I guess I could sort out some sort of agreement with the resort(s) around here.

Shut up scott, we don't need your senseless bullshit all the fucking time.

When I was 15 and skiing park, i would find photos from events etc and they were usually pretty expensive to buy (like $50 or something) i would just copy them from the website and upload them with a watermark/low res, i would've definitely paid $5 to get that photo high res with no watermark.

Again it's a good idea, just might get complicated.

Honestly yeah. I mean A lot of people ride in groups and can get pics but a good pic is a good pic. Also I can spend $5 on a lot of worse things so might be down to throw a few bucks to help the cause and get a picture.

I can get down with the hustle.

As mentioned don't overly publicize it or the mtn might shut you down. Kind of like people teaching lessons that don't work for the mtn, but if they set up advertising lessons they'd get the boot pretty quit.

Like eheath said the local mountains have contracts with a guy that is just like the Splash Mountain photos. On hill it would be tough to keep a low profile because people will need to find you through your advertising. Only ever bought one of those photos one time when my whole family rode splash mountain with cheesy expressions holding Mentos and we shared the cost between like 6 of us.
Around town at skate parks etc you might have more freedom to work and be able to sell prints at your low price without people taking a cut.

I agree with everything said, if you could find a way to take them without the mountain getting pissed at you, I think tons of people would buy them (including me)

I feel like it would be a great way to support the photographer. Its kind of like in my lacrosse tournaments I used to go to when there would be photographers there taking pictures of everything and then later you would be able to go on their website and purchase the photos of you that you like

Alot of surf photographers do that around where I live. They charge about 5 bucks a photo for a full high res photo. However, beaches are a public good, a mountain is not.

I feel like parents who enjoy their kid's skiing would eat this shit up. My begged my one friend to shoot a photo of me. She gave him 20$ even after he said multiple times he'd do it for free.

Hmm... I don't know why but I thought this is sort of what photographers already did. I guess it would be different if you went around getting photos of random people than if you go there with a skier specially to get a shot or something? I don't really know how it works though.


For me personally, no I probably would not but I can see why someone else whether they're a dope skier or a family would be into it!

If there is a dedicated park lift make friends with lifties and have them hand out your business card. Obviously it's not foolproof but most lifties I've ever met aren't always about the mountain they work for they love the shred life like I'm sure you do. If not that's a bummer and this is a worthless post haha

I feel like thats a good way to get shut down. Also I dont want people handing me shit unless its beer when im getting on the lift

yea that would be the only issue. this happens on Deals Gap too where photographers setup on corners and snap photos all day and then people can go on the website and purchase the photos of them taken that day. the Ring in Germany has it too.

A lot of the mountain near me are on government land so have less control over access. Though the main location is private land so I would have to be sneaky or deal with the mountain properly.

Yeah there are probably 100-300 park rats on any given weekend at my local hill plus another 100-300 gapers that are probably even more willing to fork over the money.

The target market isn't necessarily good riders.

If business was good, I would focus on one mountain but would do "guest" appearances at other mountains and keep people updated in advance so they could know where to go.

I was also thinking that I could have private photo session days where a crew or family or group could hire me for a 1 or 2 hour session to get shots around the mountain. Mostly catering to touristy families on vacation. Charge $50 - $100 a session and do 4 or 5 a day at a given mountain.

I don't think people are going to go to a different mountain just because you're there, on the off chance that they run into you in the park, you get a picture of them that they like, and they decide to buy it.

Ive hear of people already doing this in major resorts. They will follow you around for a few hrs, make a 2 minute decent edit and charge quite a bit. I would never pay someone for shooting, it should always be for fun.

Remember that 98% of clientele would be rich gapers expecting X-games footage.

That's a good point, though I do think some people would consider it, especially if it meant potential media exposure to tens of thousands of people via instagram etc... (Say I post a photo from each day shooting)

Most of my friends would rather send it than film... most of my friends don't have high quality cameras...

Plus this isn't for me, it is just a business idea. Obviously people can take photos on their own, obviously you are not the target market.

There's a guy at the park I ride who does this, and I wouldn't give him a dollar...to me, it's about as lazy a hustle as possible. Many resorts employee fulltime people to do that job as it is, maybe not specifically in the park (but vail resorts do put green jackets in some parks for this very purpose), but all over the mountain. NO resort will give you permission to do this as an independent contractor, guaranteed, so if you decide to pursue this, I'd be very discreet about trying to profit from it.

Most resorts are very hawkish against people doing shit like selling burritos on hill, or even offering private lessons or coaching, so I'd imagine they'd see this in the same way.

You wouldn't pay someone for shooting? So would you not pay an electrician for fixing your wiring? Or a dog walker for walking your dogs? I'm sorry man but your logic is ass backwards. Yeah I would understand if it's some 16 year old with a gopro filming you but I feel like if someone has the balls to go around offering their services on the mountain then they probably can produce some quality work (and they have confidence in their brand which is a plus).

Here is some piece of wisedom: Capitalism is paying someone else to do something because your too stupid to do it yourself.
I can do my own renovations, grow my own food and create my own edits. I dont need people to survive or work for me. Sure I buy stuff, but at least I can admit Im just too lazy do do it myself.
Living in the mountains teaches you self dependency and pride from your own work.

How can that be backwards logic?

How is working 8 hours during the day then editing photos for 2-4 hours every night while maintaining a website and dealing with clients a lazy hustle?

What do you do for a living? On a side note I actually have two professional degrees and work 35-60 hours a week.

Awesome. You live in the mountains and can do everything for yourself. I would love to put your self filmed edit up vs an edit that was shot on quality equipment with a good crew and see how it holds up.

You're talking about posting up in a park and charging kids 5$ for a photo that will take you "2-4" hours to edit, not exactly slaving away. If you're doing it as a side gig, that's cool to me, still think it'll be difficult to pull off legally/logistically, but I haven't attempted it so what do I know. I was moreso referring to the guy I know who does it.

I work avalanche mitigation/patroller and then as a carpenter for the ski area june-October.

Honestly when I worked for vail we would look at our epic mix photos to see how bad they were.

That said sometimes they have decent photographers
