All new forums are like this. Can we include a filter to sort replies by score?

It looks like it can be a very simple project.
How does the site work? Are all threads and replies sorted in a database? Letting the user decide how to display/filter the comments shouldn't be hard at all.

Nahhh, I don't think so. There's a feature for this in the vid/photo/news sections. It works because these types of comments tend to be independent of one another, where as in a discussion on a forum replies build off each other. it would throw off conversations and people who are disagreed with will get downvoted and pulled to the bottom of the discussion. But it's important to have like all views in a discussion, ya know? It just would be weird haha.

So funny enough, we actually have wanted to offer this view for a really long time. As a matter of fact, it was in our vision one of the big reasons we launched the up/down voting in the forums.

However, its been met with resistance by a lot of community members. I'm absolutely all for it, and we have most of the mechanics in place to do it. Just need tomake sure people want it.

nope. makes people not read threads. just the first few top rated comments and that's it. I'd think less people would comment too since after a thread is 1 page long no one's going to read your post so no point posting it. then a lot of the shitty posts by members who get their dicks sucked by everyone are always at the top and legit posts from members who get hated on a lot will rarely be read.

Mingg described it pretty accurately, I feel like it would be a lot weirder to carry on a discussion without it being in chronological order.

I mean there are loads of forums which have been very successful using "threaded" style view, which is what this is.

Also, the way we looked at it was that it'd be an option vs. the default.

Although, overall usually the idea is met negatively so it just goes into the back burner.

Idk. I think a lot of forums start to suck when it becomes nothing but a pissing contest to say something "witty" to get upvotes.

I like it in the order posted.

Also when following a thread that goes on for a while. You may have read up to page 2 and change. You come back and now it's at 3 or 4. You can pic up where you left off and see what else was posted.

Idk, keep the forum as a forum IMO.

I guess I can understand it. I kind of hate that on the one hand it's like "I'm 12 and I've been on NS for 2 days but this other forum I'm on does this so NS should do that". But on the other hand that helps to secure the base of people for the future.

I honestly didn't like some stuff about the way the forum was setup at first and didn't join NS. But then I finally got on here and really ended up liking it.



There have been a lot of small changes. Some I've loved, other not so much. But I feel like this would change things too much.

I guess if it was an option whatever though.

Nooooo. Maybe in the future, when the site has evolved more, but I HATE that layout. IMO it works well with VERY hight traffic sites.

To a certain piece of logic, if we're going to once again decide that nobody ever wants threaded view even as an option... we should delete post up/down voting.

I think you should eliminate up/down voting regardless. What purpose does it serve? It also, in my opinion, discourages discussion. If I dislike your post, we all win if I explain why I do, and you can respond. A lot of people will just click up or down instead of actually engaging. I think up/down voting is one of the changes I like least.

I mean the entire reason we put that feature in was to give different forum sorting options, as well as do fancier things with Karma. In the end we haven't had time to get around to those changes... so the up/down voting of each post is a little useless.

We're going to do another pass at the forums later this summer, so we could look at either actually finishing up the display/voting systems or nuking some of the thread rating stuff.

I'm much more open now, because it wasn't as successful as we had hoped and there was way more resistance to the change than we had ever anticipated.

Ahhhh I think I misinterpreted what was being said. So it wouldn't be ordering individual posts in threads, but rather how threads appear in SG, NSG, etc? I think that wouldn't be so bad.

It would actually be both. The point of having voting on each post is to be able to re-order the thread into highest rated and make them threaded - just like comments. The idea was never to make this the default, but to offer it as an option for new users who don't want to sort through the shit.

Having the threads ordered in the listings would also be an option, but that could be accomplished by simply an overall thread rating vs. a post rating.

Bottom line is that post ratings was designed under the idea we would eventually rank everything by votes.

You just said it yourself. Yeah, it's not what it was intended for but it still serves a purpose. Why scrap the voting if it has a purpose?

I mean because if nobody wants that feature (see many of the responses in this thread) and if its a bunch of extra work we can just scrap... then the voting has no purpose and theoretically it actually takes away from people voicing their opinions when they can just click a vote button.

I think individual post ratings should go, but I think ratings for the whole thread/op could stay. Not sure how I feel about sorting the threads like that but I like how higher rated threads pop up on the homepage now

yes they definitely do, and this is due to the overall thread rating. Its calculated from all the votes in the thread, but it was initially designed to just have one rating per thread. No difference there if we make the change.

How many people agree that individual post ratings should be removed?

I think you should leave it. There will always be people resisting change.

Here is what I like about the voting system:

-The ability to silently agree with a post is a great feature because It reduces clutter and might actually enhance the readability of the thread. Many people used to comment "." to show an agreement with a post.

-You may notice less overall negative posts if people can collectively agree that a particular post is bad. They can get on the downvote train instead of making an insulting/bashing comment below. Again, less clutter and better readability. You can even decide to hide comments that score below a threshold.

The point that the threads are conversations is a good one, it's true. However, in some cases, people want to read the funniest and/or wittiest post instead of sifting through multiple pages of text. In this scenario having a ranked style of thread would be preferred. Yes many posts will be taken out of context if ranked posts are sorted individually so you might want to couple that system with another that can help bring together the conversations.

Being able to organize conversations stemming from specific thread replies and can benefit the overall conversations because, this way the thread can be sorted may allow for more conversations to happen under one main topic. Again, much easier readability with quoted replies in a string.

Trying something new shouldn't hurt anyone.

Please do not waste your time deleting good work. Don't move backwards, you should continuously improve. If people use it it means they like it. If you have to change it into something else then by all means do so. Deleting something shouldn't be your first option.

would probably liven up the forums again. Even though it's summer I can't remember the last time you would consistently see threads with replies 3 or 4 days old on the first page in both SG and NSG

Blame social media. It has significantly hurt the forum experience.

Good news is we don't have to even attempt to appeal to the average person anymore. The core audience here is all that matters so fuck it we can send it.
