That's not what I'm trying to say. Someone less mature may be having a lot more unsafe sex than some one more mature therefor that person is more likely to become pregnant. Pregnancy rates among African American and Hispanic teens which generally speaking live in more impoverished homes and have less maturity on account of a lack of parental support (I know its a huge generalization, however, I'm trying to talk on a large scale.) are less mature and are 2.5 times more likely than Caucasians to become pregnant by age 20.

The main problem that I have with this topic is that again and again, it is mentioned that teenagers that are having children are not "responsible" enough to be good parents and deal with the responsibilities that parenthood entails

I strongly argue this idea because the premise of this argument is based upon age. People think that just because a teenager is a particular age (say 16 to keep it simple), that the teenager is somehow not "mature" enough to deal with the responsibilities of parenting a child.

The key issue is that people are justifying teenage parenting on the premise of age, and this idea is flawed because it insinuates that somehow a person's age dictates their maturity and emotional well being, which ultimately states that a correlation exists between a person's age and a person's ability to be a good parent. This concept is BULLSHIT.

The whole idea of this topic is "teenage pregnancy", and that phrase right there is a label that is placed of people of a certain age having sex and deciding to have the child and become parents.

"Teenage pregnancy", which is a phrase has been labeled with immature, emotionally troubled, often misinformed people that had sex and had a so called "unexpected pregnancy". This phrase has created a negative connotation that is tried to archaic geriatric thinking, and the phrase has been beaten into the heads of people thru the media and various other outlets, and it basically means that all teenagers that have sex, maybe have a kid that they didn't accept are BAD PEOPLE AND LOUSY PARENTS.

First, take a look at the term in a historical context. What was group-think back then vs. now? Go ahead and do your own research because I am not about to write an essay about the history of a bastard.

Now, I am not a parent and I am not intending to be one for a good while. So I am not well versed in the best way to raise a child. I would hazard a guess that you need to have enough time, money, and energy to focus on a child. If external factors are distracting the parents from their child, they will not be effective. Just my opinion, two parents are better than one.

Historically, the women would stay at home to tend to the house/children. The men would go out and bring home the bacon. Nowadays, we have both parents in the work force. Having only one source of income will put some serious stress on a household. Especially when they work three jobs at minimum wage, which results in the single parent having two hours a day to "raise" their child.

You are looking at the issue from purely an American perspective and are rejecting the overall concept parenting.

The problem with the argument that you are making is that you are ascribing age (teenagers) as a measure of maturity and ability to parent a child.

Age is totally irrelevant in your argument because you are looking at this issue in a very narrow scope. There are tons of people that have children that are in their 20s and 30s that are horrible parents.

School also has nothing to do with this in the larger scope of the issue because billions of children are born by uneducated parents all throughout the world, so what you are hinting at is that somehow there is a correlation between education and parenting, and in fact this is a false claim. People in other countries that are totally uneducated have children and you are stating that somehow schooling dictates how well a person can parent a child.

Again, open your eyes are look at this from a holistic perspective. You need to consider this as a global issue.

Marriage doesn't automatically make someone financially responsible and magically gives them energy to raise a child. Marriage is literally just a stupid contract people care about. There is no causation between marriage and parental ability. There's a correlation because usually married couples plan to have kids, but it's not a causation.

Are you trying to say that the Roman way of life sets the standards for ours? While we have been influenced by Roman culture, we have also been influenced by Germanic culture, by Middle Eastern culture, etc. No culture exists in a vacuum- each culture is shaped by those which came before it and those which existed around it. To say that our culture is derived from the Romans is only partly true and in no way morally validates what the Romans did. Simply because the Romans did something, it doesn't necessarily mean that we should.

Also- opinions can be false and logic is the means by which we prove opinions to be false or true. Proof: if all opinions are true, then my opinion that there are false opinions is necessarily true. Therefore, false opinions exist. Additionally, if one of you is saying X and the other is saying not-X, both arguments cannot be true at the same time (but you can both be false). This is the Law of Non-Contradiction and basically sets the stage for the possibility of knowledge itself. Without it, knowledge (of anything) would not be possible.

So, actually, between the two of you- one of you is right, one of you is wrong OR you are both wrong.

I think a huge part to consider is their network behind them such as are their parents supportive, helping out, etc.
can they be good parents? Maybe, they will need some help. Can they be good at life as well? Generally not so much.
Meaning, if you have a kid as a teen it's not that you can't be a good parent but the people who had kids in their teens are dumb/broke as fuck because the time they would be spending getting schooled or working their way up in a career ladder was spent taking care of kids.

At least their kids are less likely to be retarded. There are so many health risks/developmental disorders that skyrocket with kids whos mothers had them after 30, 35... Advanced maternal age is not the end of the world I'm sure lot of our moms had us when they were over 30, but the chance of you having a retarded kid after 35 is like 4x higher (because I totally didnt pull that number outta my ass...)

True things have changed, but one thing hasn't- teenagers don't have the life experience that older people do. It's not because they are stupid or dumb but because it's a simple mechanical fact of life. It takes time to learn about the world and how best to properly navigate it and very few young people have the life experience required to do it. Young people always think they know the answers to life only to find out in their 30's or 40's that they knew very, very little about the world and how best to live it.

This is not to say that young people can't be good parents, but it's very unrealistic to think that teenagers are best equipped for dealing with one of the most important tasks set before us (properly raising a child). More often than not, they lack the means and ability to best provide for the child in a highly complex, modern society. Is it possible? Yes of course it's possible, but it is highly improbable and one only has to look at those families that had babies when they were teenagers. It's not exactly a favorable position to be in.

From what I've witnessed from where I live and work. No.

The majority are White Trash looking for their next *insert your choice of alcohol here* fix and the cheapest way to get cigarettes. It's mostly from 1 night stands with something that looks good after a night out. And (I don't really like using this) no prospects in later life. There is no discipline with their children and they run riot all over the place.

onenerdykidTrue things have changed, but one thing hasn't- teenagers don't have the life experience that older people do. It's not because they are stupid or dumb but because it's a simple mechanical fact of life. It takes time to learn about the world and how best to properly navigate it and very few young people have the life experience required to do it. Young people always think they know the answers to life only to find out in their 30's or 40's that they knew very, very little about the world and how best to live it.

This is not to say that young people can't be good parents, but it's very unrealistic to think that teenagers are best equipped for dealing with one of the most important tasks set before us (properly raising a child). More often than not, they lack the means and ability to best provide for the child in a highly complex, modern society. Is it possible? Yes of course it's possible, but it is highly improbable and one only has to look at those families that had babies when they were teenagers. It's not exactly a favorable position to be in.
