Why does photo of the day skip?

I've noticed a lot of days get skipped for photo of the day. It can be very frustrating especially if your photo was one of the days! Right now if you go to the photo of the day scroller. it jumps from a picture on the 20th to the 24th????

Potd is not simply the top rated photo of the day. It's picked by an algorithm that can go back a ways sometimes.

So photo of the day is not really a photo from that day.
