Earthday should be a day where people want to learn about how to make the world a better place, (I.E eat less meat, walk more, etc,etc). Instead it's become a popularity contest.

It is perfectly feasible to remain sustainable and raise animals for slaughter. They live in close quarters, in a high stress environment (effects tenderness of meat). They are slaughter en mass where mistakes are made frequently resulting in all your tainted meat scares.

And thats just beef, poultry and pork are treat and fed even worse.

Local is pretty much the exact opposite of that. And where I work we have control of the process start to finish. And all that equals is a better quality product that is proven to be better for you.

Wouldn't raising farm animals in close quarters reduce the amount of land being used for raising them (less habitat destruction)? Do ¨local¨ cows release less greenhouse gasses? Do they consume less water? I feel like the whole point of industrialized farming is to make the maximum amount of meat using minimum resources. Wouldn't that make it better for the environment?

Not to mention all the meat that goes to waste every single day.

Scotty_BYo it's like when a fellow university student went missing after a saturday night, everybody was posting on facebook like, "Find this kid hope he's ok" and shit like that. Well it was a Sunday and I figured I would go look for the kid. I was out in the woods for half the day and I saw 2 other people looking for him...none of them were students. californiagrownHoly shit. You just dont get it. To produce livestock you must farm their feed, and then use land to grow the animals. thats double the land usage of growing a crop.

Livestock produces a ton of methane(extremely potent greenhouse gas) along with CO2. Crops produce oxygen, while absorbing CO2.

Livestock must use water to drink. Their feed also must use water. thats double the water of just growing a crop.


I agree that eating local is better for the environment- the biggest reason is that its expensive and so people would eat less meat. Just because you saw the "right" way to produce meat, does not make meat just as "green" as a crop.

Tanner-DIm in college and the reason I do not eat a lot of meat is because I'm to lazy to cook it. I do get protein from eggs though.

That infographic had nothing to do with comparing crop production to meat production, it simply stated all the ways (and vague amounts) of pollution the "meat" industry was responsible for...and all I said was that there are sustainable ways to produce meat (local farming).

I never claimed meat production was better for the environment than crop production. I simply stated on a humanitarian front, and on an environmental front local farming is better than industrial farming.

Jesse_For a long time Subway had used ingredients found in yoga mats to preserve their bread.

LonelyI'll have to look into it more. Not a huge fan of the whole "they used ingredients from one none food thing in food". Corn chips are made with the same ingredients as types of car fuel!!
