Also, look at the way he goes off the jump: hands forward and leaning forward.
Is that the only way to avoid a back landing, I mean anything else and he would've been toast right?

Not necessarily, looked like he was absorbing the jump so he went farther instead of higher. Seems to me like that's the reason for his posture at takeoff.
