Warning- strong opinion--

Skiing is predestined to be not as cool as snowboarding and especially skateboarding.. sure it might look cool from a non skier perspective, but once you partake in both and begin to compare, skiing starts to look like the scooter of snow sports.

Heres why-- skate boarding is cool (once you embrace that street legue and stuff is a joke) first of because the skater themselves are sweet dudes, doesn't matter if they are pro or not, overall they are hilarious, chill and respectful. I dont know how it is out west, but the vibes i get from skiers in MI is wack... a majority of park rats seem douchey, and obnoxious, wayy more than skating, skaters and skateboarding and snowboarding is cool

BECAUSE of it the parallel activities that they have decided are also cool, such as art. Snowbaorders also tend to focus alot more on street.. street edits are rare on this site now days.

Like ming send.. skiing is way to serious, that why i love an account like @stopskiing because tall t dan realizes is wack and must be stopped, he will never run out of raw memes cuz skiing will keep on dishin out things to roast.

Yet some people are keepin it real.. shout out to the bunch and other like them

Honestly, I wish the vibe for skiing was similar as it can be at skateparks. Basically just a chill sesh and have people feed off each other. Wish it was like this more versus trying to look really good and judge each other and give a negative vibe a lot. Personal experiences though

Saying all skaters and snowboarders are chill, hilarious(?), and respectful is a bit of a generalization. Also, not all skiers are judgmental jerks. Don't let one bad experience define a population. I for one could care less how well you ski, because I'm probably worse.

I'm kind having a hard time seeing the point you're trying to make here. In my opinion Michigan and the rest of the Midwest has better vibes than anywhere else in the country. When skiing in places like Keystone or Park City you are for the most part ignored by the locals unless your throwing doubles or doing flips off of rails. However, in Michigan everyone knows each other and typically you can always find someone to ski with regardless of skill level as long as your friendly. People out west seem to complain a lot about the conditions while people in the Midwest get stoked when the snow guns blow 2 inches of fresh snow. I'm actually kind of curious about people being obnoxious at Cannonsburg, I'm sure it happens, but it is pretty rare and you can just ignore those people.

I think a lot of people fail to realize that skiing has a lot more aspects to it than park which snowboarding doesn't have. (You rarely see snowboarders skiing huge lines in Alaska or at least you don't as much as skiers)
Overall, Skiing is cool and it always will be.

You have some valid points about keystone and such, and michigan makes die hard skiers, but i know you dont have much experience with people other than john b, and other cburg kids- a problem at cannonsburg atm is its such a young group of riders, all 14-16, once i started riding with more snowboarders at the burg and skating, skiers make me cringe.

I loveee to ski, but it needs some help

im sure there are some sweet skiing scenes around the country, but more often than not, vibes are weird

Now that you mention it, I agree that there are a few kids that are cocky, However I think that stands for any sport. I'd just try and ignore them. btw if your ever down to hit urban in the area me and a few other kids are usually down sadly the lack of snow made that a challenge this year. I think it would be cool closer to the start of the season next year to get on the regionals fourms and try and get a group of people in West Michigan hitting urban. I think part of the reason for lack of street edits is due to people not having anyone to do it with so they just go to the hill instead.

In response about more skaters foccusing on street, dude you are comparing apples to oranges. In case you haven't noticed urban skiing is fuck ton of work, first of all, you have to find a spot to session, and depending on your local cities this can be pretty damn hard, you need enough snow to build you setup and you either need to find a place with enough slope to get your speed or have a winch or someone tow you in with a car. You need other people to help film and build your setup and then if the cops show up all your work could be for nothing. With a skateboard you can just pick up your board and hit the streets, if someone runs you off of a spot, you have come back and not have to rebuild anything. Finnally, besides a skate park which many kids don't have access too, the street is your only place to ride, it is your mountain.

How about you just go ski and have fun like the skateboarders you're referring to do? The only reason why people like you think skiing isn't as cool as skateboarding or whatever is cuz you over analyze and compare them.

At the end of the day, whichever you think is cooler should be the one you find more fun to do. If you leave the egos, labels, and bullshit aside, that's all that the sports really are - something that's fun to do. Why should anyone care what people outside the communities think of their sport anyway?

Skiing is becoming much "cooler" as the snowboard industry is losing some steam now a days and that can be seen in sales, etc.

That being said....as a die hard skier of 23 years I still think street and park snowboarding is MUCH better looking and 'cooler' than skiing will ever be. Park riding just looks better on a snowboard period.

Street/rails on a snowboard blows skiing out of the water 1000000000000x over.

Alright OP, I read your post with an open mind and have decide to take your bait.

First off, skiing is not predestined to not be as cool as anything else. Not only has it been around much longer than any of those other sports but it really is just an amazing sport. Saying it's "predestined" is inferring that it didn't already set the scene for these other sports to flourish.

Your realization of why skateboarding is cool but skiing isn't is so one sided. You realize that if you ignore the comp jocks in skiing that the same things happens, right? There are tons of cool people in skiing, pros or just everyday dudes. Park rats can be stuck up and douchey but people like that exist in every facet of life. The amount of pretentiousness that exudes from skater kids is off the fucking charts sometimes. Doesn't mean I think that all of them are dicks. Surround yourself with better people. Also park skiers don't represent skiing as a whole, keep that in mind.

I think you've been living under a rock if you think there isn't heavy urban just casually being tossed out in skiing. Flip the script? BRS? Tabernak Pack? Real Skifi? Did you see the x games real Street entries? I'm sorry if you disagree but the level that street skiing at is so high right now, arguably higher than snowboarding. Snowboarding hits gnarly shit, however the technicality skiing has brought to the streets is on its own level.

Skiing isn't serious. Anyone who tries to convince you it is is trying to sell you something. Cough cough j skis, tall t dan, line skis, etc. They're putting on an image so as to separate themselves from the "pack" that is mainstream ski culture. The irony of all this is that they truly are in fact freeski culture in the realist sense. Skiing, or at least freeskiing, thrives off of this counterculture type energy and that's why we see progression like we do.

The bunch isn't anymore 'real' than any other skiers. One could make the argument that the realist skiers on the mountain are those who ski however they want, not swinging there arms around or wearing a certain piece of gear that is hot at the moment because they saw people do it on the internet. The realist people, at least to me, are the dudes who just have a good time and let others live how they want. The people who aren't worried about the next big trend or calling out comp jocks on social media are the 'real1s' as tall t would say.

Skiing is filled with people like this, people who just do their own thing, too. If people can't realize this then I'm fine with them going into something else. To each his own, live and let live.

Ok by no means are we the scootering of snow sports, thats fucked up. I agree with the attitute of skaters vs park skiers tho coming from both sides. At the same time I dont think snowboarding is too much cooler than skiing, I look at it pretty equally. And people from the outside looking in around my area seem to think its pretty dope too, idk

Skateboarding goes through the same boom and bust cycles that freestyle skiing goes through in terms of mainstream participation/"coolness". Right now skiing is mainstream, and snowboarding is definitely hurting. Things will probably turn around eventually and you will see less park skiers, but there will always be the core dirtbag park rat kids who don't give a fuck. Do you think people stopped riding pools just because some jocks popularized vert skating and then it became uncool? Same thing is happening with "street" skateboarding nowdays.

There are gonna be a few cocky kids anywhere you go, but for the most part, skiers are usually pretty chill if you just talk to people and have fun. You don't have to be throw down to make people think you're a chill guy, and it's not just the Midwest that has good vibes, it's how you look at it and who you choose to hang with that gives places like keystone a good vibe. And this is from my experience of being a Colorado skier. Like Cheddar said, it's all about what you love to do and if you just forget about all the assholes (there aren't many) and what people will think of you if you aren't as good as them, you'll have a better time and hopefully you'll also have more pride for the sport instead of comparing it to different sports and saying "skiing needs more of this" and "skiing needs less of that." Skiing has many different facets to it and that's what makes it unique. It's good to be different. I mean sure, there are some bunk kids that think they're all that but at the end of the day it's all about choosing who you ski with and how you look at the sport itself. Pave your own road instead of saying that skiing needs to be more like other sports.

I'll have to disagree here. We need every type of skiers there is. It's good to have diversity. I myself don't like every type of skiing/skiers, but just watch whatever skiers you like.
All-around skiers are really good at everything, but they'll never be as good at jumps/rails/pow as skiers focusing mainly on one of those aspects. But then again, it's cool to have both, so we get to watch well-rounded segments, or really good stricly urban / backcountry segments.

Skiing =/= scooting, retard.

It's the default sport of the mountain. You surf at the beach. You skate at the skatepark. You ski at the ski resort. It's far more versatile than snowboarding too. Virtually any trick in snowboarding has an equivalent on skis. However snowboarders can't ride around like The Faction Collective or Candide.

Snowboarding always tries to be like skateboarding too but it's so gay. Like when they try to do skateboard rail tricks even though they don't have any trucks to slide on and it just doesn't look good.

You and Ming can go and spend your time watching edits and feeling insecure while the rest of us actually go out and have fun doing the best sport in the world, skiing.

Skiing- 1000ish bucks plus, need snow, need slope

Skateboarding is more accessible which is why I think it's cooler

Skiing will never be mainstream cool.
We will always be subject to old Jerry Serious and his rich shitty family, because they ski and have always skied and will always ski. And they are as much a part of "skiing" as any chill flowy fun-loving no-fucks-giving skier that we admire.

Unlike skateboarding and snowboarding, only a small segment of our sport/lifestyle ever underwent a creative revolution. The rest is still fairly conservative and elitist and that's likely never going to be "cool".

We don't have a legacy of edginess and no number of wu tang stickers or black and white edits set to aggressive hip hop beats will ever convince Joey Weekender that the sport he's done all his life is even remotely edgy, and that's fine.

We're all still here, we're all stoked, and it's kind of fun to laugh at all the shitheads taking it way too seriously anyways.
