Another friendly reminder to wear a helmet

this is a photo of a good friend of mine after our ride this last saturday. fortunately there was a group of hikers close with a first aid kit, because the two of us had little more than some washcloths and a bike tube. he was airlifted to Portland from Harris Park, OR where he was treated for a cracked skull...an injury that would have likely been reduced in some way with a helmet. he's 24 hours out of surgery with his skull fragments removed, a bit of cement and 18 fresh new staples. remember to protect that noggin kids.

Never really wear one skiing, which a lot of people find really weird cause I wear one skating, biking, etc.

I'm really Happy that in skiing you don't get judged for wearing a helmet, its the norm. In skating, wearing one can even keep you from getting sponsored and is super uncool. Congrats to the community for not Judging how to protect your noggin.

Im the opposite, I never wear one skating or biking, the only time I ski without one is on backyard setups

Well its changed. A good change though. Now almost every younger kid starting out in the park has a helmet on. I think some parent used that as an agreement for them being able to hit the park.

15 years ago it was more "wtf is a helmet?" although I wore one riding a bike as a kid. Nobody wore them skiing.

On the plus for skiing you're bundles up and trying to stay warm. Skating its hot as fuck a lot of times and you're trying to stay cool. I can understand it. That said it doesnt take much to fuck you up when everything is steel or concrete.


Also head injuries suck

Lucky dude. That is way out in BFE so it is pretty lucky that everything worked out so he could see a doctor in Portland. A helmet saved my life from what would have been death or massive head trauma one time when I was out dirt jumping on my bike. Pretty glad my mom made me wear one so now it is routine.

I still can't believe people do anything that could be risky without a helmet! You can't control all outcomes no matter how good you think you are, and some of them involve smacking your head!

It seems like a lot of people don't wear helmets to emulate the thug lifestyle of the pros. People see pros not wearing helmets and so thats the "cool" thing to do. But we aint pro so wear a helmet kids! I've taken a few falls that would have concussed me for sure or cracked my head open on a tree if I wasn't wearing one

I've had a few for 8 years now and its the best helmet

You're just one of the jackasses that annoys the shit out of everyone else. Mind your own business and let others ski how they want to. I bet you'd be totally accepting and understanding if a bunch of rando kids were giving you shit for not wearing a back protector or a full face helmet cause like its totally more dangerous not using those things.

Shop guys say berns are complete garbag, sure they look decent but your better off with a multi impact giro helmet or a poc

Bern helmets are shit. The multi-seasonal helmets are not rated for biking and they fit like crap. Go look up consumer reports. Don't be like the jackass in this thread who instead of buying a Bern helmet chose the slightly less safer route of wearing what I assume was a hat.

Broke the strap on my helmet a while back and just never got around to getting another one. Never felt the need to. When I do feel that I need one (Urban, double attempts, big jumps, none of these I do very often) I'll borrow a friend's.

Look for helmets with MIPS. More & more should be coming out this year, and it's just an extra layer of protection. It's available in MTB & Ski helmets.

yeah i've heard a lot of things about how they aren't rated properly and are only hard hats etc. i was planning on a smith or a giro helmet

lol not exactly "Joeys"...i have over a dozen years of racing experience on BMX, XC, DH and crit. We both had helmets however we were within spitting distance (1/4 mile or so) of our vehicle so my friend decided to remove his helmet and it was attached to his camelbak. obviously it was an incredibly poor choice in hindsight but it's something EVERYONE who rides regularly does or at the very least has done, especially in warmer weather after a long ride. the reason for the thread is to remind everyone that accidents do happen regardless of riding conditions or confidence in your own skill.

Yeah... no... most people don't do that because its stupid as shit. If your head is too warm to wear your helmet for another 10 minutes, then you either need a new helmet or a new brain. That really is the dumbest shit I've ever heard and its a big joey move.

this is actually really really true now that I think about it. When I ride at lift acessed trails I generally take off my helmet and cool off my hair if i'm on one of the ride outs/ roads to the village. Never on the legitimate trail, but at the speeds you get going a rock could kill you which is something i'll think about now.

lol I love the ambiguous snapchat, which was probably followed by "yeahhh, was dh biking and getting buck and fractured my skull! Gnar!" if anyone asked.. when in reality he was probably traveling 10 mph, took an uncoordinated crash, and smashed his head.

I still don't understand the argument of taking the time to remove and store the helmet when you're only 1/4 mile away? How can you defend that?

just because I made a dumb statement doesn't mean I can't do neat things on bikes, i'll completely back my statement of not wearing a helmet on a flat or uphill paved/packed road until the point it starts to descend.

I can't figure out how you think i'm contradicting myself, so theres that.

Haha, I doubt the guy busted his head that badly while pushing up, or climbing up haha. If he did, well, let's chalk that up to a freak accident, not lack of helmet lol.

I've wrecked myself on gravel roads before, it's not fun.
