Seeing the recent news about if3 has me thinking..what the hell is going on?


No more joss..no more joi..no more if3 awards..no more orage masters..and it seems like this is the last year of west coast sessions...where are we headed in terms of freeskiing events? Are the classic venues like the ones listed above being replaced by equally as cool events?

Seems like freeskiing is getting bigger and bigger but the events that have embedded themselves into the culture of our sport are disappearing..and its sad to see that. The bunch started up creation nation but that seems like the only thing thats really replacing these classic events. I just dont like seeing all these things i grew up on ending.

What are your thoughts? I feel like im not the only one that feels this way.

The only constant is change. We have to adapt or become stagnant and the sport will start to fall off. Goes for any sport really contests and events come and go some for extended periods others for short stints but the point should be that the new events take from the past ones to create even better results.

Here's an analogy for it, "damn we hit this flat box thousands of times and it taught us so much brought us so far but now the top is mangled, edges rusted so we got rid of it, and now were hitting this dope ass flat rail and doing all the same tricks but going bigger and learning even more"

That still leaves the chance for that box to be pulled back out taken apart and then remade better years later. I'm sure you will see a come back from past events or the same one just re branded

You say creation nation is the only thing replacing these events but what about B&E invitational and RedBull Redirect

I'm actually really happy comps are moving more towards creative, and urban style events, the B&E invitational was amazing this year, as well as events like red bull redirect and that x games urban event who's name has slipped my mind

Who knows though. With NS being involved with Dew Tour next year, we will see if their claims are true. time will tell

I heard of there being a possibility for another event to take place at Hood in the spring. The venue is too good and everyone is there so it makes sense for something else to take its place.

Lets see, in the past 5 years or so most of the shit has disappeared including as previously stated War of Rails and all the other shit mentioned.
Also Gatorade free flow tour, salomon jib academy, this year they didn't have the sean jordan open, North face isn't really a comp anymore cause its edits, tanner hall invite but I think B&E replaced that and lastly Dumont Cup. So yeah to my knowledge the only tour of comps for Am's is the Rev Tour.
So yeah skiing's getting bigger but mad shit is getting canceled.

Follow the money or lack thereof. I'd guess all these events are ending simply because the financial backers aren't really getting any return out of it.

What once was effective within marketing and advertising is no longer working either. This world is changing so fast with the arrival of smartphones. And because of a new style of consumer, events that worked in 1990s and 2000s aren't cutting it anymore.

If you want to constantly hold onto the past, then you become one of those sad people that never changes. Change is good. One reason we don't like change, is because it's unfamiliar. We get complacent with what we use to do, instead of what we should do. Looking back now, Joss wasn't that great, yeah the edits were cool. But like okay. A lil bit of a story line and some skiing you can see in any edit. WSI was just a party fest. IF3 was a party fest. West coast sessions was cool.

But moving forward, we have B&E, creation nation, SLVSH, THAT FUCKING SOUTH KOREA SLOPESTYLE COURSE. It's very easy to dwell on the past and become nostalgic. Or you can accept change and be happy about the changes in the freeskiing community.

If an event gets cancelled its probably because of a lack of interest, a lack of funds, or both. Plus shit just changes, events get replaced. Same stuff happens with any sport, especially freestyle sports where really anything goes.

Tell A Friend Tour is amazing. The whole concept of getting out and going skiing with a bunch of homies and new people is so dope. I love it. We need more of that. Spreading good vibes and spreading stoke on skiing. So many young kids think the only way to be involved with skiing is by doing comps which is fine but there's so much more to it obviously. TAFT is just one of those things that no matter what you do skiing wise, yall can still get out there together and have a rad time. I fucking love it. It gets me hyped.

Even the gatherings that NS does. Seeing all these kids come out is so cool. Those little rippers get soooo hyped on everything. It's such a rad thing. Not many other sports really have that(at least that I know of) so it's a neat thing.

Maybe all these change is happening at like a higher level, but I know in my little area and at the local level of many other areas, there is some really, really awesome stuff happening.
