haven't seen it yet, but probably will.. but a few comments before I do...
- none of the characters in the previews look like they have any real charisma, gravitas or authenticity
- stealing the death star plans and having a stormtrooper go AWOL (force awakens) were both essay ideas for high school English class for me. They have probably been explored 100'000s of times by people around the world prior to 2015
- Force Awakens was so fast-paced and the editing (and camera-work) so flashy and erratic that I feel like it was a traumatic event
- Revenge of the Sith (ep3) was great, hard to think none of the preexisting characters aren't appearing
- any Force philosophies or tie-ins with the other SW films or characters (besides the obvious death-star connection?)
Episode 1 also made a similar amount of money, given the change in theater ticket prices since 1999.
And you forgot all the people who went to see it twice or more. How many times do you plan to see the new one?
It's sad to watch Disney dredge up this corpse and sell it to all of you.
wrong again. TPM made 770 million, (adjusted for inflation) TFA made 930 million. Is that similar money to you? Enjoyed the film, but the first half of the movie, pretty much everything pre-Scarif attack, was pretty weak. Its way too busy with too many irrelevant characters and locations. Everything that involved Forest Whitaker made it feel reminiscent of episodes 1-3, which isn't exactly a good thing.
Honestly though, the Darth Vader scene makes the entire movie worth it.

Look, it's perfectly clear that the empire is modeled more or less off the Nazis, it's been done for plenty of villains.
It's another entirely when the writers of the new Star Wars inject their own social justice politics into the movies. The writers clearly want that be the message, hence the main writer making it very clear that the empire is a "white supremacist" (I'm surprised he didn't say "white nationalist") organization only three days after the election. No reason for that other than to show the "diverse" rebels beating back the evil white man.
It's boring, and obvious. Like I said, only guys that like to get "bent over" take any enjoyment out of such things.

I enjoyed Rogue one. I thought it did a nice job of filling in the story before A New Hope and just had a good story in general especially the whole "Rebels running around pew-pewing Storm Troopers" approach like It had more of a war movie feel to it . Plus the battle scenes were totally rad from the Taliban-y street fight on Jedha to the epic final battles above and on Scarif.

Just read the plot synopsis. Now I can go see it and not have to worry about losing the plot.. (it doesn't look too complex) .. it has a lot of elements from previous SW (even Force Awakens) like the force field around planet (RoJ)... and reminds me a bit of Terminator 2 and Titanic as well. Can't anyone be original anymore?

Right at the end, after Jyn broadcasts the plans through the tower, they are picked up by the rebel mothership (you see Admiral Ackbar really excited as he sees the data being downloard) but then you see guys on that ship putting it on a disk a handing it off too each other (as Vader is killing them) and then eventually through a door where Leia gets it and leaves on the smaller cargo ship. Is that right? So Vader actually boarded the rebel mothership to obtain the plans? If the mothership had the plans, why did they need to go to such an effort to put it on the disk? (it was stored on the motherships drive's and they could've just warp-drived out) Or were they worried that mothership would be destroyed? Also, wouldn't have multiple parties got the plans, as Jyn talks about it being broadcast to the entire universe on the tower?
And then when A New Hope starts, you see an imperial cruiser catching up to that same cargo ship, so that is meant to happen only a few minutes later? Why didn't the cargo ship warp-drive away as soon as it had the plans? So where did the mothership go, and where did the cruiser come from?
Also, the last scene with Vader wasn't anything special, it didn't last long either and he's just killing people as he's walking forward in the corridor. It was much more brutal at the end of Revenge of the Sith when he went beserk on the Jedi toddlers and the people that helped him. Also, when you see him in R1 taking a bath in goo, you barely see him. Maybe I missed something. (or the version shown in Israel is different)

I can see why Lucas liked R1: it had the retro vibe of ANH and a lot of the sets and costumes recreated. That was cool. The old x-wing pilots looked out of place, though.
On 7-9, I would've preferred to see Lucas outline the story to Disney and Disney have all their people recreate to that vision on 7-9. Instead they just had their people invent something completely new. Lucas should've done that on 1-3 (possibly harder to do though.) But I think the real failure of Disney is not being able to establish a good working relationship with Lucas (and vice versa.) Too many people vying for power.
I thought the movie was alright, really tries to milk the nostalgia factor for all its worth though. Also why do all the deaths have to be so clean and dramatic for the main characters? I think it would be far more shocking and realistic if a character was just running along and got blown apart unexpectedly. Oh and the storm troopers still can't hit the main characters. I loved the reactions of certain family members, though. FIRST THING they said was how it was sexist that none of the rebels that volunteered to go to Scarif were female. haha. feminism.
Pros imo: integration into episode 3, shows effects on civilians and how there's fighting among the rebel alliance, good cg, sad and dark.
cons: messy, hard to keep track of at the beginning, took halfway through the movie to figure out what was going on, trying for nostalgia too hard.

Rogue One, to me, felt like Star Wars-themed Disney ride more than a Star Wars movie. The original trilogy is practically religious to me, the prequels were bad enough, albeit somewhat saved by several things like the music, podracing, good stories, and solid acting from most except Anakin.
This movie felt overacted and poorly written, and didn't evoke the emotional response that I except from a SW movie. Even Force Awakens was better in that aspect. Like an above poster said, it felt like they tried to milk the nostalgia factor for all it was worth.
The fact that John Williams didn't score was glaringly obvious and the movie fell very short musically. He is one of my biggest musical inspirations and a huge reason I fell so in love with SW.
Can someone explain how accurate the movie was in regards to the EU?
This movie was unnecessary and did not need to be made in regards to the storyline. Saturating the Star Wars universe with more decent-at-best movies is sacrilegious to me, and I despise Disney for doing so. Lucas has clearly gone off his meds and should never have sold the rights to Di$ney.

I was not a fan of rogue one. Unfortunately I think we are beginning to see the path that we all knew Disney was going to take. The money milking route.
The editing and cinematography was choppy and had a lot of empty space. The movie did not feel smooth or really tied together at all. It was like watching one of those old college football games where they cut out all the commercials and replays.
The references and Easter eggs in the film were in your face. They didn't hide little hints here and there in the movie. They literally shouted the references. Just to make sure that you know it's a star wars movie.
There was no character development at all. We go from Jin being rescued as a child to her being in prison as an adult. We don't know why she hates the rebilion and halfway through the movie she flips sides for the sake of the plot. Her partners had no real reason to join her, accept for that they were captured together. And we know nothing about any of them. All of this is a real issue when you kill all the characters off. The audience doesn't care and doesn't feel any emotional connection to anyone besides the robot and the blind monk.
The movie couldn't go ten minutes without some sort of deus ex machina. All in all would not see again. The only redeeming part of the movie was how the got leia down to a t.
Interesting vid on how Leia and Tarkin were done in R1 with CGI. Fortunately, they found a head mould of Peter Cushing ('13-'94) from 1984 (3:52) to use for the recreation. I wonder if they can do something similar with Fisher (RIP) for EP9.. did they get a mould before she was buried.
I agree - for the short time I saw young Leia again, I thought I was watching anime.
A few more points while I'm on it.. all the characters didn't need individuals deaths - they all would've died anyway in the final fireball. The camera could've just flashed around the base at that moment of explosion just after Jyn. In fact, I think that would've been more dramatic anyway. Also, there could've even been a gay-type scene with the blind guy and his pal (Chirrut and Baze) -- not that that interests me at all - just to make it in line with the times (the actual director even said he was open for that discussion to take place of a romance between them.) Also the way Jyn ends up on the beach with Cassian just moments after they were on the tower together really killed it for me... did I miss something? That was impossible.

If you re-watch any of the original movies there is hardly any character development throughout a single movie, they don't reveal every secret of a character's past, only hints it, and if you can't reason her choices throughout the movie then you're a retard. I'm sorry if that's offensive but her character was possibly the most basic of human you can get... just like the original movies.
Guess what? The original Star Wars movie took place halfway through a story line so there was no establishing the characters with the audience. Want to know why? Its because the audience didn't need to know how a character jerked off in their bedroom in order to feel involved in the story.
