As I'm a semester away from transferring looking back I've had a pretty shit experience in community college. Granted I'm a minimum of 2 hours away from snow, but the experience at the school has been less than enjoyable too. Anyone else have a similar experience? Anyone who has transferred from a CC find that you like being at a University better?
I actually got a lot out of my science and math courses in community college. Small classes with actual teacher interaction. By the time I finished my calculus sequences there were about 12 people in the class. If I took those classes at university, I'd be lucky to talk to a TA.
Either way, they both have their shortcomings. There has been plenty of nonsensical bull shit to deal with at both.

I had great relationships with my proffs and TAs in my classes at college and I went to a big state school. It doesn't take a genius to show up to office hours haha.
That said, OP, what did you expect? CCs are basically part time schools for most- there isn't going to be "student life", or the academic culture of a university. Id expect you to have a much better time once you transfer.
I'm at community college right now saving my ass some money for two years, I would definitely had preferred going to a university for four years but I'm not trying to be drowning in debt after. Honestly I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would, it helps I got 3 homies from high school going there too. But I was able to come up with a dope schedule for this semester only having to be at school two days a week which allowed me to do the most skiing I have ever done in a winter.
I took some lower division math courses at a community college and I can't really say anything negative about it. That being said, I like the academics at university much more.
I will say, going to a CC has definitely saved a lot of money, but at this point is that worth having a nonexistent social life? But yea, I moved away from home and I kind of expected less of "another highschool w/ashtrays" vibe. As far as teachers go though I find it can go anyway. I've had teachers that are teaching part time because they also teach at other U's too and could give less than a fuck about the students. I've also had really great teachers that will give a student all the time in the world. Either way...

If I had to do it over I probably would have started at C.C. First semester at a fancy 4 year school was pretty rough and an expensive way to get started in college. It's true that the 4 year experience has a lot of social components built into it but the 'new' phase where everyone is open to meeting new people really only lasts a couple of weeks and then everyone splits off into there little groups. People that transferred in still get to be new when they transfer in anyways.
The cost of C.C. is so much less and people can still get scholarships and financial aid. Next year any senior that did half way decent in HS will basically get free community college here in Oregon.
I graduate from Penn State in May and started at community college. With that being said, I'm still going to be 37,000 in student debt. Harrisburg community college sucked ass, but overall the professors were equivalent to PSU. I definitely like real college better.
I went to a community College for 2 semesters and graduate with a degree. I haven't skied in 2 and half seasons. Have a full time job thats the 2nd step for my career, only 1 company away now. Been working my ass off in order to make some money to settle down and start skiing again.

honestly the most expensive part of college, by far, for me was room and board. I went to an out of state school and tuition was a blip because of all the scholarships i managed to get... and i only had a 3.2 GPA. I got scholarships for which i was not qualified for, and for which major i was not in. I just literally applied to everything.
I know a lot of people who went down the CC rabbit hole and never emerged. On the flip side, one of my best buds spent 3 years at a CC while selling bud full time and managed to save enough money to put himself through USF for his final 2 years of school. You just have to be very motivated to get through it with great grades, but you do miss out on a lot of college life.
that said, I wish i would have played ball at one of the Jucos that was recruiting me, killed it on the field and/or in the classroom and gone to a much better school than what i did. But hey, hindsight is 20/20.
CabbyArrantop I fucking hate Cc I can't wait to transfer.
Ditto my friend. I guess I'm definitely looking for more of social life when I transfer. Like the academics are fine, I can deal with them being hard/boring or having a shit teacher or whatever. But when it comes down to it seems like most community colleges (or just the ones I've attended) are occupied by kids that have no desire to leave that area. Obviously that isn't entirely true, but I just see/meet people that don't have a ton going on and are fine with doing nothing living at mom and dads.

The one I go to is actually in a college town. There is a state university not 2 miles away. It really sucks because there really isn't any socializing in community college and all my friends have moved away to other colleges
