Black Bars in edits?

I have a question about the use of black bars (idk the correct name for them haha) in edits (compress video more). It makes the video look a little more professional, however, I think that they have there time and place. What do you guys think about using these, and how do you go about using them in your videos? Thanks NS!

Plan ahead for sure. If you wanna use them, try to get your shots a bit wider seeing as letterboxing essentially replaces a portion of your video with black. You definitely don't want to use them if you end up cropping the subject's head out the whole time. Good luck.

If you don't account for it, people will chew you out for it. Theres only a handful of edits that have done it good.

Just don't do it, 16:9 is already a pretty narrow horizon for filming skiing.

Thanks for the feedback! I figured it would be pretty hard to do for skiing, like eheath said. I was working on more of a landscape edit of different scenery and I liked the look of having the black bars. Good to know for future reference for sure.

Sometimes i put in the black bars in shots that i wasnt zoomed in enough for. It kinda makes the shot look a little more zoomed in without have to crop it and lose resoultion

heres and example, if u see some on some of the goals i zoomed out so i used the bars to make it look a bit more zoomed in

it looks way cooler if it is a color other then black or it is a pattern or something especially with fisheye vignette

If you're using canon, magic lantern has a cinescope that allows you to see the black bars on your view finder
