How are skis measured?

I was out in Italy and France just after new year. The snow wasn't too great - rocks all over the place, and I had two core shots by the end of the third day so I rented some skis the rest of the week. The rentals were 190 Nordicas (definitely 190 - the skis' own graphics said so), but they were at least 10cm chorter than my 190 Volkl V-Pros when I stood them base to base. So, could anyone tell me how different brands measure their skis? Or are twintips measured differently to take into account the loss of running length due to the tail? Informed replies only please.

I think all skis should be measured according to running surface. I mean if it's material it's gonna be way bigger than it is, tip to tip, would be a touch smaller, but still doenst tell you a lot. running surface would make sense, thats what matters really

measured tip to tip. Nevermind the 20 cm's you lose by gettin' twins. I agree with ^ that says they should measure running surface.

companies measure lengths differently. some measure running length, some measure tip to tip, etc., so comparing sizes between brands is not very effective unless you actually hold them next to one another as you mentioned before

^ Yeah, exactly, I know all that. But does anyone know exactly how each brand (or a certain brand) measures their twintips? It seems pretty important to know what length you're actually getting if the difference can be 10cm, especially if you're ordering skis online and can't actually see the length.

if it's a 179 measured by running surface and a 181cm measured tip to tip, your not going to notice and different in length, so really, it's not a big deal.

K2 measures tail to front contact point, so if you measure them tip to tip you get about 4 cm i.i. the 179 PE is really 183. line is tip to tip, so you can ski them a little longer, like the 177 chronic will ski more like a low 170's ski. salomon is tip to tip as well
