Anyone have experience with Matlab?

For my final project I have to create a battleship game in matlab. I have some random questions about the kind of loops to use.

make an empty array as the game board and assign values to it based on whats on it. like assign 1 to a grid if a ship occupies it and if someone hits it change it to 2
