Are the Grateful Dead a Jamband

I hate the word 'jamband' first off. Me and my buddies got in a discussion turned argument about this subject. I made the point that they developed the idea of the jamband, however they were not what I would label a jamband. Rather, they first were the father of the genre, but you could not label it as a jamband because they gave birth to the genre, the idea. My friends say that they jam, they have the qualities of a jamband, thusly they are indeed a jamband. I would like to have your informed input on this subject, please discuss.

p.s. I'm drunk, surprise; fucking drunk english major can write better than most of the little bitches here.

no, i generally try not to comment on anything you say. mainly because youre a republican hippy. im not sure if its an oxymoron, hypocritical, stupid, or just really arrogant. but im going to go with all of them. so, in conclusion, undying hatred, etc. etc.

they can be classified as a 'jamband' but they really are not because the genre never really existed beforehand, they are really considered rock. same debate as whether early phish is prog rock or jam.

The Grateful Dead is a rock band. But regardless of labels and how we feel about any one label in particular, I don't think it can be disputed that they're grate!

i consider them a jam band. but i also consider zeppelin a jam band. any band that can jam out for 20 minutes and make it good and explore their song is a jamband by my terms.

I would not consider GD a jam band, nor LZ, but there are many tracks on like Dicks Pick's and various other cds where they just jam for 20 some odd mins. Also they may playing a song, then just jam for 5 min extra after the lyrics or 5 mins in between versues, the grateful dead was very unique and that's what sets them apart

Pete is currently sulking around Mt. Hood, shooting with Poor Boyz Productions and hitting on Kristi Leskinen. She hates guys, Pete lamented, so it’s not going good. Apparently Canada isn’t the only thing that’s tough for Pete to get into.
