i keep hearing rumors of this but it can't be right, even if they get no snow for the rest of the year, aren't the camps on the glaciers so the amount of snow the previous season wouldn't really matter right?
somebody please enlighten me on this...

^wrong.
Last year they had trouble keeping the camps open till the last sessions. If the snow conditions dont improve up there quick, i wouldnt be surprised if the camps dont run this year...

Last year towards the end of the adult session the snow was really really sketchy. You could hear water running under you as you skiied arround and you could alsmost see more glacier then snow. Shane and Mike were talking to the glacier manager and they were thinking about setting up snow guns to blow snow on to the glacier this season. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

yah obviousle global warming and melting glaciers are the biggest problems, but in the reallly short term, like this year, will the snow shortage be a problem?

for neone whos ever been on a glacier, you know that the actual 'glacier' part of it is solid ice. therefore the camps rely on the cooler temperatures due to elevation as well as the abundance of snow from the winter to make thier jumps, and have snow for the summer. so while there would still be snow on the glaciers, there wouldnt be enough to make jumps, and have for the rest of the summer if conditions dont improve.

Glacial ice is like concrete (not like what you get out of your freezer), with all kinds of little rocks, bacteria, and other crap. No, they're not chopping it up.

^ It's not called 'global extremes' its called global warming. Even though the glaicers are ice the main reason their melting so fast is the increase of C02 which heats up the earth. The kyoto protocol is signed its just not ratified because Bush is bitchmaid and believes 'developing countries' such as India and China should be included in the protocol because of their increase of pollution also.
Maybe some people will wake up and finially take note to shit like this. I'm sure if we get 5 more years of this people will start to realize whats up.

this is true due to the lack of snow the last t-bar on the glacier is still not runnin now so if the situation continues this winter the is no way that they will beable to have summer camps. this situation will have to be followed closely or it aint goin to happen this summer

You said 'their' above. It should have been 'they're.'
You ever consider that there are people on this site who don't speak English as a first language (a lot of Americans included?).
Oh and global warming isn't Bush's fault. It's all of our responsibilities. And remember: just because the climate is getting warmer doesn't mean it's a bad thing. It just means the earth won't be the same. Of course for short sighted morons, change is a terrible thing.

^ Well JackBach you herb, Bush really have the envirnoment last on his agenda. He could actually maybe, possibly.. ratifiy the kyoto protocol. But since hes backed by major oil companies the money thoes companies would lose would be huge.
It's all out faults.. nobody wants to drive a ugly hybrid around town. But people really need to be more informed about issue on global climate change. The world will change and also the ski season, so I hope you enjor skiing in indoor parks.

oh yah, global warming is a bad thing, jackbach, because it doesn't just mean that the climate will get warmer, there is a whole other string of problems tied into it.
One problem is the rising sea level, much of the worlds population lives near or below sea level, and as the ice caps melt the sea level will rise. By 2050 entire countries will likely be underwater, and many island countries are already being affected, Inuit's are being forced to leave islands that they and their ancestors have inhabited for thousands of years. Consider that New York is only 8 feet above sea level. Think that this won't affect you because you don't live near the ocean? Think again, where do you think the masses of displaced people will move to? and where will we get enough food to feed the rapidly growing population, with even less land?
Another problem is that the melting of the ice caps and the subsequent release of floods of cold, fresh water into the oceans, is drastically changing weather patterns as we know them. Unpredictable, extreme storms are most definately a problem, no matter where you live.
I could go on like this for a long time, but i think most people have already succumbed to their ADD. but think about this, plants become less and less efficient at changing co2 to oxygen after the atmosphere reaches a certain level of c02 saturation. we are nearing this threshold, so what few plants and plankton we have not destroyed will become less and less efficient at producing the oxygen we need.
So in conclusion, it is shortsighted and retarded to not worry about climate change

Well, calling me a 'herb' and saying that I'm 'retarded' isn't the best way to gain credibility.
Now: I never said global warming is a GOOD thing. I said it's not necessarily bad. For example, many researchers believe that global warming will increased precipitation and thus, in colder climates, could increase snow. Do they know how that will effect the earth?
What's bad for us as humans can be good for the planet. In order for the planet to survive, it may be necessary to wipe out parts or all of the humans on earth. Personally, I'd rather that not happen, so let's talk about how we can avoid further global warming problems.
Funding alternative energy sources, specifically solarcells, would be a start. This technology was underfunded in the first place and thus was never capable of providing realistic quantities of energy. In the next 20 years we'll have that technology and solar cells will become approximately 60 percent efficient (they're considered ~10 percent efficient now).
We are also working towards plasma assisted combustion which will provide diesel and gasoline engines with with 50-60 percent more power and will produce ~40 percent less polutants.
The real problem is that we humans ARE shortsighted. We can only see the economic benefits of utilizing our current power supplies. We can only see that the planet is getting warmer, but we have no fucking clue how its REALLY going to effect us. The only thing we can do is change how we consume energy and the only realistic way to do that is to fund research that can solve our energy needs.

^Of course we have no idea how these new enegy sources may be counter productive to the longevity of our species or the planet.
Why haven't we utilized nuclear energy more in this country? Most will tell you because it produces massive quantities of radioactive waste and that the facilities are unsafe. In reality, nuclear energy could provide enormous quantities of energy and the waste products involved can be minimized stored efficiently.
Read up on nuclear power. Frontline is pretty good, check it out:

^No. Democrats, republicans, all politicians, and all people (men and women) of economic and political wealth are to blame. And you and I are to blame not fucking rioting in the street because the decisions they make behind closed doors, under the cover of shit journalism.
Bush is just an easy scapegoat because he's exceptionally poor in terms of the environment. Deomocrats haven't done much better. And in the longrun, dems and republicans are pretty much the same these days (i.e. new democrats=middle of the road republican).

^^haha. No we're all to blame. Humanity is incapable of acting without negative consequences. The only hope we have is that we can increasingly develop new technology to cope with our past decisions.

There is something you can do with cars. Its called BIO DIESEL. You can buy it from gas stations(not the home made shit: thats too hard core). Because its made from vegtabel oil and such that is brand new; and is not fossil fuels that are really, really old. It actually helps the enviroment, because when its burned, the gases from it can be reproduced by trees/plants/animals and such. Fossil fuels are so old that they are nolonger accepted by plants and thats what kills trees that produce our oxygen, that keeps us alive and helps keep the atmosphere less poluted.
So there are things you can do with automobiles, but people are blinded by that, everyone wants to advance to Hydrogen and shit, something completely new, when theres something they can use with out any change.
The Xgames are doing it, certain buses in Seattle and Portland are doing it, if I had money to put towards a new truck right now, I'd be doing it. But believe me my next vehicle will run on biodiesel.

i have to say, non of whats happening to our basins is bush's fault. providing that anything he does actually causes lasting damage, we'll be facing that in the near to far future. Geographical events take place on huge scales and even if he managed to implemant tons of anti-environment policies the day he got into office, it would still take more than 4 years before we saw those issues appear. so for now, blame it on pre-bush globabl warming and weather patterns. fuck.
