fat skis getting overplayed

it wasnt long ago that the seth pistol was considered a very fat ski, but in recent years fat skis have become a fad and it seems almost every company is gunning for a ski with a waist wider than 110. i was checking out the new volkl skis and noticed that theyve added to there collection of very wide skis, now the have the sumo which has roughly the same dimensions as the line prophet. my question to you is why do we need skis this fat? can you imagine how heavy they probably are with their wood core. and would you ever buy a pair?

Once you go fat, you'll never go back.
Thats what they say you know. I remember back in the day people loving thier fat powder ski. I'm on the Skogan Sprangs' and they're fairly fat... well, theyre not skinny, and I like them alot. (Off subject, but the carbon ollie band rocks like a hurricane) I dont know why fat skis are so good, but I like them.

theres advantages to fat skis
The skull thump. A quick blow usually dealt to the side or back of the head. Simply flick them in the head with your finger. An alternative is to smack your child up side the head with your palm. Very useful for teaching your child to read when he or she makes a mistake. id say that the DB tabla rasa has and advantage over conventional skis because of its light weight carbon fiber core, but the sumo and prophet have heavy wood cores

I think it's gone a bit too far, if that's what you're saying. And no, I would never buy a pair of skis as fat as the prophets.

If you ski a lot in powder, why not?

For powder it makes perfect sense, I love my spatulas. In the park i think there's a smaller limit, fat makes rails easier and stomping landings, but you're sacrificing weight.

gotta ride em to know. so much stability, and the ability to power through crap. can stomp just about anything. for the east coast i wouldnt go any smaller than a scratch bc and west coast skiing on something smaller than my gotamas just doesn't make any sense. as for the skis with ~ 130mm waists, never tried em but i can imagine they'd be absolutely amazing in the pow.

I've never skiied fattys. Riding scratch fs right now...But i want some fattys. My only dilema is how well they will handle the bumps? Anyone ski bumps on their fattys. And I mean actually rip the bumps.

whats worse is the fat skis being trendy to have. why on earth would u need BS skis on the east coast?
i mean, it doesnt affect me, and to each his own, but a lot of it just seems to be trendwhoreness

Threndwhoreness? Are you serious? I have Seth Pistols, I live in Vermont, and I love them everywhere. In my opinion, they are an all mtn ski that kick ass in the powder. I also have PEs and 9 times out of 10, I'll bring my SPs to the mtn over my PEs. Has nothing to do with being trendy...has EVERYTHING to do with having fun and progressing my skiing

I don't know how old you guys are but I learned how to ski on straight 200 cm skis. The skis make it easier to ski. I've an old schooler's soul and there's something about making skiing in powder EASY taht just isn't right.
Don't get me wrong, I know where this argument leads...Where do you draw the line? Is a pocket rocket or pistol too fat? I don't know. I'm just sayin' that skis like the Prophet make skiing easier.
Now, when skiing becomes easier progression (hate using that word, but oh well) increases. Many people think that's good for the sport and it may be.
Think about it like this: what if Major League Baseball execs. came out and said they're allowing wider, lighter, and corked bats. They'd say it would increase the amount of homeruns, making baseball more exciting. Same principle with fat skis.
It's not necessarily wrong, but people are still resistant to it. The last and final question resulting from this conversation is the following:
When does progressing technology change the sport to something else? In other words, when is skiing no longer skiing, but just a form of skiing?
Just some thoughts. I'm not hatin'. Buy the damn prophets for all I care. If you have a good time on them, that's cool. You're makin somebody rich too, which isn't bad for the economy.

Plain and simply...they are fun. I'm old too, if you consider 27 old, I learned how to make slalom turns on 204's. I know what it's like to ski the big boards too. But I have fun on SPs and last time I checked, skiing was about having fun.

^Yeah, I've got PR's so I know what you mean. But the PR or SPs are no Prophets either. I'm with you on the fun thing.

I agree...the prophet is a bit much. But I would give my left nut to ride those things in a few feet of powder. Talk about flying!

i understand how i can change the sport, making it something different. I got the spatulas(which i love) but it's a totally different type of skiing. You can rip tight lines really aggresively, but it's almost too easy, almost.

'overplayed'? man, I cannot believe you even used that word to describe the best thing that has happened to ski technology. Get with it son, if you think they are heavy, work out or stop hanging out on the couch during off-season. The only time my MADE'N AKs weren't the most ideal ski was when it was almost solid ice out. Then I just had to deal with the difference in leveraging when you stopped. You need to try and experience the wonders of fatter skis before you come on here with silly assumptions posing as innocent questions.

Is there an upper limit to width, underfoot, to which technique would be sacrificed to accomodate stance? I wonder about this 'cause the Made'N is (only) 108 mm, but the Prophet is already at 130! You'd start looking like a cowboy at high noon... the next steeze?
--------
Demo days allow all skiers to try different skis to find out which ones reward their brand of poor technique.

I'm all for having fun. If you have fun on water skis, go for it. I don't. I'm not tellin you how to ski/live, I'm offering my opinion.

I think skiing will get to the point where it won't be hard anymore. 10 year olds will be able to rip as hard as expirenced skiers. That sux for us, but unlike other sports, you don't have to be big and strong to shread. Look at some of the 12,13,14 year olds that can to cork 9's.
Pretty soon everyone will be able to do it.

fat skis are better for everything as long as you aren't skiing on ice. On any park day, Id rather be riding my 185 ARVs... they are a ton more stable landing and taking off switch. The only time i'm riding my teneightys is when I'm trying to learn a new rail trick, or for urban.

^having said that, they are a ton easier and therefore more people are able to ride pow pow which means lines which I would have been able to ski untracked for a week after a storm are now thoroughly shredded in a day. It's a cost benefit thing. Too many old people with pocket rockets though, that's for sure.

Equipment creates an easier entrance for people to enjoy the sport, especially fat skis, however, the comment about young kids throwing cork 9s has nothing to do with this disscussion. Jumps are just that man, jumps. If you can stand on your skis, pop and have air awareness, you can learn tricks. Strength doesn't matter, it is finesse and coordination. Skiing big lines or crazy shit does require more strength, but you still need the coordination and observation. I am rambling.

fellas, fatties are a thing of the future...not a trend. i ski my 189 made'ns everywhere and couldn't be happier. after half a day on them, i was throwing them around like any other sticks.
go fat...you won't be disappointed. as for those of you who think fatties are 'trendy'...just wait a few years when fats have taken over.

I skied on racing skis 2 years ago and had my first powder experiences, last year i had some stiff mid fats that were quite good, and this year I got a pair of ARVs that rip it in the BC and also on the groomers and park...Now dont tell me fat skis dont make skiing better, they simply kick ass. Enjoy youy own skiing, stop looking at other people, some ppl ski the pipe(even pros) with pistols or BCs and theres probably a reason to that.

well according to DB's theory on powder skis you want a fat nose and a skinny tail (swallow tail if you want to go the whole nine yards). apparently to get the best peformance out of a ski in powder is for the tails to sink and nose to float. but with the sumo the tail is extremely wide (140). whats the deal? its not like you ski switch in the backcountry as much as you ski forward

Ontario is on crack, no most people don't ski switch that much, and most people won't buy the SUMO, but for those who do they need a ski like the SUMO
