What to expect in mammoth 2nd week of april..?

I can tell you one thing, the second week of April is usually when the Mammoths come out of hibernation. Whatever you do, don't piss one of them off.

Anyway, going out for a week on the 9th, what will conditions be like? Are they prone to April storms? Or just sunshine and soft snow? Thanks!

It should be good. I was just up there for 6 days and the coverage was great. I got classic windbuff and some pow, although the wind shut most of the mountain down on Monday.

When Mammoth has this kind of coverage things can go several ways. April storms are very common, in fact an April where you didn't get at least a couple of storms of at least 18 inches would be an odd April. The top can still be winter snow at that point, with nice windbuff, or the top can be fun slush, so great turns either way. With as much snow as they have they will be open until Memorial Day if they want to stay open that long.

The one thing you have to fear is the top getting slushy, followed by a cold snap. If that happens it will be icy until it thaws again or there is another storm. This happens from time to time, but you are more likely to get classic winter windbuff or fun slush. Paranoid 3 gets a bit more sun and can be slushy when Paranoid 2 is classic winter windbuff, so you have different options depending on what you want to ski. Just be aware that if you want to ski slush in Paranoid 3 wait until it softens up a bit, as it will be icy in the morning if it has been warming up enough to slush up. If you get classic spring slush conditions Hangman's is a really great place to make spring slush steep turns, although it has to be pretty warm for it to slush up.

I will be there the first weekend in April, then there the weekend after you are there. Good luck. There is a good chance it will be fun.

Im asking what people have seen over the last 2-10 years, as they may live out there. I'm not asking for immediate predictions, just traditional stats/ people's thoughts on the subject. I don't live there so it'd be hard for me to create expectations

My crystal ball tells me that if he were to go in august he probably wouldnt get any pow, just as if i were to try skiing in PA right now the conditions would probably suck.

exactly, not sure why april brings for the sierras as far as climate goes, so i figured id ask... i guess people don't understand the difference between weather and climate (I'm asking for the climate trends, not the predicted/forecasted weather)

Stick to Main and don't hit the top till 12 or so (unless fresh obv). Best spring skiing! Stays open through Memorial Day for the last 28 years at least...with droughts, so hopefully this year we ski through June!

Sweet! Yeah I skied there a few years ago in June, just cuz I was in Cali and bored haha. And yeah, the snow was concrete (groomed concrete, though) until about 1030-11

We've got tons of snow, the parks are sick! You can camp in the woods for free. And it's supposed to keep snowing off and on all month.

April may be my favorite month at Mammoth. Still snows, but you can also take awesome Spring park laps. 99.9% chance you have an awesome time.

haha, I'm on TGR and will prob ask over there too, but I've been on NS for 11 years and love the community here, so i started here. thanks for the info though!
