Any other resort get thosse little racer kids who go diagonally of the sides of jumps for rails and fuck them up? Makes me so mad. Im not against little kids in the park or newbie s trying stuff (we were all there at one point) but just do it in a way that dosent wreck it for the rest of us
I've come to the conclusion that i don't really give a shit about them. Does it really mess the jumps up that bad? As long as people are taking their turn and not snaking people or stopping in dangerous places......they can do whatever they want as far as I'm concerned.

Its just getting to me know as everything becomes soft and yeah it does fuck it up quite a bit. Midseason when snow is everywhere I wouldt give a shit but now that its scarce its bothering me quite a bit
One time I saw this snowboarder go off the side of a jump, like you're talking about, and he landed nose heavy so the front of his board caught in the snow and he flipped over and fell straight off the side of the knuckle.
this was my first year working park crew and i can honestly say that i don't really care about those kids anymore. as long as their not stopping on the lip and creating a big spoon i have to fill later they can do whatever they want.

They're kids, leave em alone. If they aren't snaking you/getting in your way/being dangerous then it's a stupid thing to worry about. They're just trying to ski like you and me. They aren't causing any more damage than you are by jumping off the lip. Lips get worn down, it is what it is. That's why you have park crews who are supposed to rake them.

This happened to my roommate last year. Knocked himself out and had a terrible concussion.

yes it actually does. Dont worry though park crew will spend time continuously fixing their fuck ups to keep the park rideable.
Titsandwich11people love to complain about this but if someone going off the side of a jump "ruins" the jump for you, you fucking blow at skiing
people can use shit however they want. im sure you wouldn't squawk if one of your buddies took off diagonally on a jump to tranny find something
no, not at all. It actually does ruin the jump. For example. Cut up jumps on the side of rollers on trails. Those are formed from people taking the side angle into something even if its ice. The same thing happens in the park.
Everyone likes a nice maintained park right? Well people the people side jumping things and climbing all over them fucks them up.This is especially bad in the spring when they rut the takeoffs out to the sides to a point where its a challenge just to get to the rail.
Freestyle skiing is fun, and shouldnt be exclusive. I am down for everyone trying to get in there and enjoy the park, but dont tell me that these people arent fucking things up because they 100% are.
The park is not a jungle gym for kids to climb around on the rails, the boxes arent benches for mom, its not cool to sidejump or climb around on takeoffs.

Fuck this. day staff is supposed to maintain the park but your argument is equal to throwing my plate on the floor in a restaurant because somebody is paid to clean it up.
I actually like having nice crisp corners.
Also in general to thread, almost all the time these ARE the people who snake other riders, stand in bad spots, get hurt hitting features improperly.
theabortionatoryes it actually does. Dont worry though park crew will spend time continuously fixing their fuck ups to keep the park rideable.
Also it comes down to park etiquette.
let's put it this way. i hit rail takeoffs and regular takeoffs diagonally all the time to tranny find, and needless to say im heavier and hit them faster than any gaper side-hits a rail lip
so what's the difference? people like to tough talk on gapers but no one has ever complained about people like you and me hitting stuff however we want, provided we're being safe
sometimes shit gets rutted out, and park crew does or doesn't do their job and maintains it. and the world continues to spin.

Honestly I dont think its that big of a deal. The only time I mind is if a takeoff hasnt had time to set. If the takeoff is a few days old, even in the spring, it doesnt do to much to it as long as their are more people hitting it "right" than side hitting it.
I really never see a problem to this except for a few things. Like they're cutting off people, stomping/stopping on the lip, and being in the landings. Besides that I don't understand how people get so butthurt about there lips. If they can't handle a little seven year old having fun just getting air off them for what they are made for, then I want to see them this summer at Hood when they experience lips that's just get beat down to nothing.

I mean I know what you're saying. I guess it differs everywhere, but I run into side jumpers maybe like once every 5 or 6 runs and it isn't like they're lapping park. Most people do not do that. Compared to how many people hit it "right" there aren't that many side jumpers so the damage can't be a whole lot worse.
What about filmers? I've seen filmers hit the lip but not the feature. Are they shitty too for trying to get the shot? haha
From your point of view I get it since you have to fix it up and you have a reason to bitch. But all these skiers throwing hissy fits are annoying as fuck. It's like they just get pissed to have a reason to be pissed.

Tranny find so hot right now. Can't hit rails so side jump them to be artsy

They still kill the edges over time. I mean I bring it back to gold every chance I get to minimize their efforts but still. I like a clean park and there's no reason for sidejumping.
Also I've seen plenty of times where people jump next to the feature, and land one ski on it and get smoked in barrel roll fashion. These are the kid of people who's parents would sue the assholes who put the big metal rail in the way of the jump their kid wanted to hit.

There are plenty of side jumpers who lap the park. Depends where you are. But it's a "Let's not go down the beginner park and go to the big park so we can side jump everything and tell our friends how rad we are" mentality.
In the spring it's a total shit show some places. If it's warm enough you get actual berms going on some features. This happens at even some of the mountains with the best parks.
Maybe your mtn is gaper free. Enjoy.
As far as filmers side jumping lips, what the fuck kind of garbage shot are they trying to get? "Hey, I'm going to skip this flat area next to the feature, and hit a small bump size jump to make my shot more sketch"
Maybe it's the new artsy thing.
Idk guys, whatever. A good amount of the people getting sledded out of the parks by patrol are people who weren't using features how they were intended to be. The "we were all there once" is total bullshit. Everybody was a noob, not everyone did whatever they pleased in the park.
Nothing more fun than raking out a feature to have the first person side jump it at a gnarly angle.
Also as mentioned about the sidejumpers generally being fucks in other aspects of the park. Side jumper almost took me out and broke my new board/ side jumping a rail. She also came damn close to belly flopping the rail, and landed on her head.
Idk, when you have complaints from people who came into ski patrol that this or that was unsafe or whatever, because them and their kids are total garbage, it's mildly annoying.
I'm honestly not a dick to people in the park at all. That said, it's bullshit to say that this is completely acceptable behavior and should almost be encouraged.
theabortionatorTranny find so hot right now. Can't hit rails so side jump them to be artsy
i can hit rails just fine thanks, and the entire point of what i was saying is that it doesnt matter if im the best or worst skier in the park (important note: im the best), hitting a jump at an angle is not worth getting upset about.
if the jump is so malleable that it can be "ruined" by a few gapers side-hitting it, then you can spend 30 seconds stomping it out to fix it and be done
the same people who complain about this are probably the same people who throw their hands up, yell, and skip the jump while yelling about gapers cause someone came near them in the inrun

You do realize the difference between 1 person and hundreds of people right?
First nobody opens jumps till they've set anyway. But in the spring it's a battle. Stomping won't do anything, you salt, but even then you can only do so much.
And idk what you're trying to get at but it amuses me. Most people in this situation, would flip them off, yell obscenities and then float a giant jesus flip over the jump.
Unless you like riding shitty looking takeoffs, unraked features, and takeoffs in the spring that have a double berm I don't get what you're pushing for here.
Come to mt snow where it is rare to go a run without joey jr side jumping, while joey senior uses the park as his fancy new slalom course. All while having no regard for what is going on around them.
I think it could be a problem if they are breaking down ride overs. You could do a ride through only to return to lips showing. I don't care enough to yell at someone, kinda funny seeing four year old side jump.
If your doing to find tranny or hit a diffrent rail thats fine, its when thesse little racer kids just go up and down it in full fucking snowplow destroying the lip (its only usually in spring it pisses me off because lips are already pretty shitty and they just make it 10X worse)
Breaking_RadSide jumping is bringing freeskiing back to its roots.
Please explain how hitting a jump at a angle as opposed to straight is bringing freesking back to its roots
Our park crew makes the kickers really poppy so the kids who do hit the sides of kickers usually go wayyy too far and fall hard. I was skiing next to this 8 year old and he tore his acl i think. Ski patrol had to get him.

You got it all wrong man. Side jumpers help in the spring. They even out the lip, if it wasn't for them there would just be a giant rut down the center.
can someone explain to me how side jumping (fast enough to clear to top of the lip like even most gapers do) hurts the lip more then hitting it lipslide or urban on?

Know how i know it is or just was spring break at your mountain? hahahahaha
Why has no one ever thought about just making a bunch of lips with no features or landings? Itd be like shit those proverbial flies!!
w_skiercan someone explain to me how side jumping (fast enough to clear to top of the lip like even most gapers do) hurts the lip more then hitting it lipslide or urban on?
you will never get a good answer for this because one doesn't exist
i have been skiing all kinds of different parks since 2001, this simply isn't a real problem worth complaining about. the only actual problems that develop on lips (and landings) are having big ruts in the middle (and big berms on each shoulder of the jump) and that has nothing to do with people side jumping. in fact, people hitting that stuff diagonally might even help
bitch about gapers sitting in landings and shit, great, that's an actual safety problem. but side hitting is just such a non issue
teamdummyI've come to the conclusion that i don't really give a shit about them. Does it really mess the jumps up that bad? As long as people are taking their turn and not snaking people or stopping in dangerous places......they can do whatever they want as far as I'm concerned.
I agree I think the ski community makes it worse than it is.

Well you're wrong but you're entitled to that. Obviously you haven't spent enough time where the gapers out number the people riding the park properly.
I mean if you aren't fixing it, probably not worth complaining about. why would you care, but I'm just saying that it happens.
theabortionatorI'll take a picture for you sometime.
no hate or sarcarsm, please do. ill happily admit im wrong if i see something that changes my mind but im giong off 15 years of park skiing, everything from the country's best to the country's worst, and ive never seen something that made me resent side jumpers
Titsandwich11no hate or sarcarsm, please do. ill happily admit im wrong if i see something that changes my mind but im giong off 15 years of park skiing, everything from the country's best to the country's worst, and ive never seen something that made me resent side jumpers
You know how you get the berms at the park entrances? Especially in the spring? Get enough people side jumping and that happens on the rail takeoffs.
I wish I had some from the days I worked at gore. There were some where the center was a full foot higher than the sides and double bermed going toward the corners. Actually probably wore than that. While that was the absolute worst I've ever seen in my life, and I rarely see anything that bad, I like things perfect.
Also rail takeoffs that go from nice and perfect to completely rounded on the sides from noobs rolling over them. I can take before and after pics of one of those.
And I;ve been snaked by tons of side jumpers, I've seen them collide with people, I've seen them land on the features, I've seen then side jump, clip a rake closing the feature and eat it, all kinds of things.
Idk, I'm paying more attention to how the parks are looking, and people watching the people using them when I'm in the park. I remember exactly what a takeoff looked like the day before or even earlier that day. When things get weird I notice.
Bottom line is regardless of how anyone feels about sidejumping, if there is a good beginner park and stepping stone style features, there is no reason to be doing it. Unfortunately it is also something that will never go away.
