Fat Skis edge Hold

Why would fat skis not hold on groomed or ice as well as a skinnier ski?If they have the same edges shouldnt they perform the same?Wouldnt the only difference be the edge to edge?

^ edge to edge your right would be alot slower making it not as good on hardpack, and usually fatter skis have a much higher turning radius the fatter they get (usually). Which means you won;t be arching those turns around as fast.

I'll tell you what, you def slide more on ice with fatties, you'd think they'd grab when you lean, but I almost got all fucked a few times, I don't think your leg-ankle makes as much angle or something, but it really happens

I have no problem at all rippin' ice with the PR's, it's all bullshit when ppl talk about this, if you're a good skier they'll be fine, look back 10 years ago when people ripped ice on 210's! they had no sidecut whatever but those guys still ripped......point is a good skier can make any ski hold edge as long as they have edges....

fatter skis are slower edge to edge, but it depends on the sidecut to determine how well it turns. More sidecut = more aggresive turn. But that doesn't mean that you can't make the ski turn more or less.


The skull thump. A quick blow usually dealt to the side or back of the head. Simply flick them in the head with your finger. An alternative is to smack your child up side the head with your palm. Very useful for teaching your child to read when he or she makes a mistake. Skinner skis are better on ice because the steel edges are closer to the centre of the boot and consequently more of your mass can be applied directly on the edge in a turn. The problem with fat skis is that in order to get a similar edge angle, you have to tip them over farther, which puts your centre of mass way on the inside, decreasing the pressure on the edge, making it a little squirrely.

BTW, most effective width underfoot, for carving, has been determined to be 61-62 mm.

^see, that makes sense also I think because you have to lean further, the sharpness of your edges matters more, and if your in icy conditions they don't stay as sharp very long

the ONLY thing that will make that a ski will grip on the ice is if it's stiff in torsion or not. A skinny park ski won't hold an edge if it's soft in torsion and a fat ski will if it's stiff in torsion. All that bull of closer edges is way off. An elan 1.0 has a 68 or so waist and gets killed by most of skis that are 110 at the waist. Just an example on how much torsion is a big part of edge-hold. One word to know if the ski will hold: torsion

Yes, torsionally-rigid skis will transfer pressure to the edges better and more evenly. BUT that applies more towards the tip and tail than what's happening right under the boot, which it what I was talking about.

Think about it, once you add bindings, their mounting screws, and step in with hard boot shells - there's not much that's going to twist the ski underfoot - and it evens out. From there is all leveraging and torque, which is why ice skates are the pinnacle in edge holding.
