Why are DMV's so shitty?

The employees are grumpy, the lines are long, it ALWAYS smells bad, they always take my picture when I least expect it and I'm pretty sure you always leave with more STD's than when you started

Because the location for tabs, plates and renewals: you wait in line (usually not very long though) to pay hundreds of dollars and leave.

and the location for drivers licenses: you're surrounded by teens who are super loud and have no idea how loud, annoying, and pointless their conversations/lives are.

Also I lost my ID lately at PDX airport. Something was different this time at the driver license DMV; the whole building was now a line. Apparently my DMV is now one of the few locations in Colorado where illegal immigrants can get drivers licenses. I hate illegal immigrants less than I hate obnixious high school girls, but the wait would have been fucking awful had I actually had to get my drivers license (TSA mailed it back to me from Portland)

I had to go in to transfer my license from FL to NC. When checking in you need proof of insurance(which I understand but at the same time that's none of their fucking business). My insurance card does not have an expiration date on it but rather says: "valid for 1 year." This is unacceptable per the NC DMV. So I called my insurance to have them send me the proper form and it came in cut off so I had to call them again and send another copy. You're not allowed to ask the the receptionist for faxes as "someone will call your name when you get one". After 2 and a half hours I get called up and still no fax. DMV's fax machine is down. Are you fucking kidding me?

It is because all of the DMV workers are prisoners of war and are being forced to do that job until they give up secrets.

I had to sit in the MI equivalent aka the SOS for a whole entire forty minutes the other day

It would have been eighty but a bunch of people left after sitting for a mere half hour

Maybe you just need to have some patience?

The dmv is tight across the road from my work so i can just take my lunch at a weird time and go when there arent too many people. Or i also work 4 10s so i get fridays off and i can go on those days. Never waited very long

I've only had to go a couple times so I haven't had any true horror stories.

However, from what I did see, there are a lot of people (patrons, not workers), who really didn't want to be there and were intentionally difficult and assholes, which made the actual functionality of the place go down the drain.

Its a non efficient government office....the vast majorities of workers in dmv's I have been into don't give even the slightest shit about their job

Would you? Its bad enough to have to go there once every 5 years, imagine EVERY DAY. I'd rather be in Guantanamo.

They don't need to provide good service, nor fast service. You need to get your license and whatever else you do at a DMV so you have to put up with their shitty service.

The counter argument to this is that they should privatise DMV's and allow free market to dictate how they operate. Which could either be a good or bad thing on how you look at it.

Look for ones in small towns. There is actually one a 1/4 mile from my parents house. Never had problems. Have had to go to others that sucked. I will wait and go massively out of my way to go to the smaller ones when I can
