Can we all agree that Gore parks is actually just feces on a mountain. That wall ride shit what the fuck is that? Also the gaps between the lip and rails are absolutely huge. This thread is for everyone else to rant.
it is terrible. they are trying hard this year and come up with the stupidest shit. they have a flat box that has a rock at they end of it that you have to jump over.
gore in general is pretty rough I've skied there one time, and i will never go back i got yelled at by their stuck up ski patrol 3 times, all were because I got a tiny bit of air off a side hit, and their parks look horrible, they have like jibs for cribs boxes, which really arent made for resort use and everything is sketchy as hell

d__hthey have around 5 guys working on the park this season. I have seen a few new guys this season, and even a skier.
Two are actually getting paid by the mountain to work for the park, the rest are probably volunteers that work other jobs on the mountain. The skier is one of my friends.

That post wasn't meant for me being offended, I thought I'd just clear some things up before a bunch of kids bitch and moan about how the park sucks. I think some of the stuff in the park is fucked, like how the wooden park features aren't sanded off (someone's bound to catch an edge on those features) and how the lips of the take-offs are pushed far back from the actual rails themselves. Other than that, the biggest features in the park are like the size of the features in the Nitro park at Carinthia/Mount Snow. Whiteface definitely has the budget to build bigger and better features, which is why Whiteface has better parks than Gore's parks, but their budget isn't as limited as the park budget for Gore's parks.
Not gonna lie that park looks super fucking fun for what they have. Also the gaps to the rails are something I personally love since you have a lot of time for sound on and you get to slide more of the rail than if it were very close. I'm Not a jumps guy so no comment on those but that place looks super legit if only 2 guys are working on it.
Also Wtf is wrong with you that wallride has so much more potential than some regular wallrides. That I've seen. Get buttery on that shit my friend like switch up, nose stall (while switch) at the top, nollie down. I get the feeling that trick has never even been considered and that's one of many if the wallride isn't vertical and has a smooth sliding surface.
Im taking a ski trip up to Whiteface NY for 3 days with my school. My teacher wanted to go to Gore one day, but I'm a park skier and I haven't heard to much good stuff about it. The Whiteface park is pretty legit.
Gore in itself is a great mountain with alot of interesting and varied terrain, especially in the glades. The reason that the park sucks is that the crew is essentially 3 snowboarders on the snowmaking crew that couldn't give two shits about what was in the park. They could get so many more people to go if they hired a legitimate group of skiers that knew what they were doing.

I really don't like to be a dick, and I;m always pushing for people to improve their parks regardless but Gore's parks fucking blow.
Sure maybe there are 2 day crew guys, but they as far as I know johara is still there. Also they have a brand new park bully, unlimited snowmaking potential, pretty solid budget, $ for marketing, etc.
As far as everything, I would rather see gore have 5 rails and 2 jumps and have them be perfect, than see them with 20 rails, 5 jumps, and have them be so sketchy I feel like I'm going to end up in the ER from seeing a picture of them.
As far as the gaps between the takeoff and rail, there is really no excuse for that. At a certain point you simply take out the fucking rail, and move it closer to the takeoff, or push the take off closer to the rail. Regardless of what Johara thinks is going on in the park world.
Creative and cool features are great, but in all honestly, fuck all that if you can't even build a cohesive park. You need to have the standards set up proper. You should have multiple flat and down features set up NORMAL. Not a 12 foot gap on etc, set them up normal. It's great they're trying to be creative, but people have to ride the stuff. Also with the parks they've had in the past, they aren't exactly attracting any ridiculous riders. And even if they were, a 15' gap onto every feature is not what they're looking for.
You have a 14' flat rai;? Set it up like a fucking 14' flat rail. You want a more difficult feature? build a longer rail. Set them up normal, make them rideable.
Even in the beginner park. vertical pole jams etc.
Think about this. Gore has had a terrain park for AT LEAST 20 YEARS. 20 FUCKING YEARS. 20 years, 20 years.
I'm just saying that a few times in case you missed it. There are mountains that have had parks less than 5 with better setups than gore. Mountains that don
t have unlimited snowmaking, are more limited by weather, aren't state run and don't have nearly the budget.

These guys would come down and build gore a park I'm sure, but I doubt gore would ever let that happen. Even when one of the guys was trying to help with a boarder cross years ago johara already knew everything there was to know about park building. Fuck, they sent him to cutters camp a few years, going back 10 years ago. People come from all over the country, and even the world. Experience park builders that are fucking killing it, come to learn shit. And he went with a "I already know everything" attitude. Hearing him talk like that after and about how stupid this or that was, was simply insane. These people had skills, and learned something, if he had pulled his head out of his ass, maybe he would have learned something.
I really really really hate to trash a program. I love the mtn, and the people that ski there, but jores park program is fucking horrific. It's so out of touch with reality. It's on the scale of the random mtn with a few shitty bent rails falling over, but if that mtn spent a few k and had a few more/less bent rails but still set up mediocre at best.
You have to pay attention to what other people are doing. It's 2016. This half assed park from 1999 isn't going to cut it these days. They have the resources, they just need to use them.
It's the same shit every fucking year with the place. Every year. I mean think about this. They've had a park for 20 fucking years.
If they hired a remotely competent park manager instead of a "while he's been here forever and we're comfortable/too clueless to know" and even 2 good employees the park could be pretty sick. (I don't know who's working day crew, maybe they're good and just scared to fix joharas sketchy rail setups, idk)
One of the best jumps gore ever had was the top of lower sleighride 07/08, 75% of the snow that went into that was farmed from the woods by hand, and the jump was completely hand built.
But it's not even about that, just take the fucking rails, and put them in reasonably. It's insane that this is even a discussion. There's a lot of room for creativity, but there is a reason for the trends, it's what people want to fucking ride. They want to hit well built features.
It just kills me to see places so half assed.

it seems like the park crew is too focused on making "cool and innovative" features, when they should be focusing on having mainly normal features and a few crazy ones. 95% of the people who ride park are perfectly fine with hitting normal features

The reason why Whiteface has a better park than Gore is because of Johara and the upper management at Gore Don't put that bullshit excuse in here or I'll call you out on your shit.
Maybe in the last few years Whiteface has gotten more support, but they're actually doing something with it.

Also your comparison to mtn snows nitro is also fucking bullshit. In nitro we see lower features set up close to the ground. Several propaerly set up flat and down rails of various lengths with normal gap ons to flats and urban lips for the downs that fit the rail. With Gore it's like they spin a dial to see what kind of ridiculous contraption they're going to dig up next.
I love creative features, but there's a point where you have to say, fuck creativity, and build something that actually works. If your park isn't functional, it serves no purpose. Then remember the demographic of the park. Thanks to gore shitty parks, the people riding there in the park are generally not very good. They don't need to build some sketchy combination rail with a 15 foot gap on. They need NORMAL features.

There's a difference between the people that can't be pleased, and complain about everything. You put 158 rails in, but their favorite rail isn't in, or set up the way they like it. What Gores park has that most do not.
- Have had a park for over 20 years
- Have sent their manager to Cutters Camp several times going back to 2006
- Have a brand new Park Bully as well as other new cats
- Ability to draw from the river and fairly unlimited snowmaking potential budget
- dedicated park cat/operator
So don't pull this bullshit where you try to pretend that Gore is doing something reasonable with there parks.
As long as the attitude of "well Gores park is pretty good for Gore" "Or my friends work there so good job Gore" things will never change at that place.

When I drive a car, I expect it to function like a car. I don't expect it to be a racecar, I don't expect it to get 300 mpg, but I expect it to function. I don't expect the hweels to fall off and roll away into a ditch. That's Gores park. When I ride a park, I don't expect the x games, I don't expect loon, mtn snow, keystone or breck, but I expect it to be safe and functional.
Also on this issue, I feel I'm one of the most mild people because I tend to tread a little lightly regarding mtns and their parks. Both from my occupation, and understanding what some of the places are working with.
That said, I can sincerely tell you that the posts about Gores park being good for what it is are complete bullshit.

i have noticed the jumps have improved this year. its just the rails that are 4 foot gaps onto a rail that isnt even in the ground good enough. i went up to this rail yesterday and could shake it around alot more than I should be able too.

Well he's been grooming the parks since 06/07, and grooming since the year before so I would hope they aren't too horrible. Also lots of speculation floating around about whiteface sending somebody to assist on jumps but it's hard to say. I'm out of the loop but it was funny to hear the rumors circulating.

Unfortunately I don't ride in the park much and spend my time on the upper mountain of Gore because most of the stuff isn't safe for the average park skier who is trying to progress without taking a trip to the ER. Unfortunately I haven't met Johara and I'm up there almost all of my free time during the winter. When I saw the Whiteface park crew go to Bellayre to work on their parks last winter, I wished that they would do the same thing to Gore, but that didn't happen. I think Gore's parks peaked for a while until they moved the park to Wild Air, then everything went south from there. I'm grateful that I'm possibly spending more time at Whiteface than at Gore next winter because I probably will be going to college up near there in the fall.

I hope you know I wasn't attacking you, just saying what I felt I needed o say about gore. I worked there for a few years, road there for an absurd amount of years, and have worked at other areas within an hour drive for another 6. I don't like to rag on other parks, but that place fucked over so many people it's hard not to.
The day I quit/got fired I was working off the clock shoveling and raking the halfpipe by hand to try and make it rideable. And when I mention that, I don't mean taking out some rough spots and tidying things up but more on the scale of trying to turn the snowbank in your yard into a legitimate 1/4 pipe. The thing was fucked.
My last season there I worked 40 hours on the clock and 20+ off the clock generally just trying to get things done. Idk. In the end, they fucked me over and as things were the management is happy with the parks where they are.
In their eyes, they have a park, and that's all they need. I do agree with you about the mountain, I like it, I like the layout, and I generally bring that up in these threads. So I'm not one of these "Fuck this mtn and everything about it" but feel I'm pretty reasonable with my gripes whether or not others agree.
Park passes are their own challenge. It's really a tough call and up to a particular mtn. It can keep gapers out but you have to have additional staff to check passes(which at gore would be more useful helping make the park decent) Then the pain in the ass factor for people who show up randomly and have to go to the base area to get some pass so that they can ride the park, a park that isn't even worth an extra fee over 25 cents sometimes.
They should address that problem though. They need to talk to their race coaches. I've worked at a lot of different mtns, I've worked with racers at some places. One mtn I worked the start ramp for some of the races, and this year
I spent a good chunk of my birthday working on hill building a start ramp for the FIS race we had.
At gore racing brings in a lot of money, so to some extent there should be some privilege that comes with that, but it's beyond over done. The racers are treated as if they own the mtn and rules don't apply.
I remember some cunt telling me she was going to get me fired because I nicely asked her not to take her group of wedgers over the biggest takeoff in the park. And then told her off when she started yelling at me. Or another one that almost hit me while sidejumping and then told me he could do what ever he wanted, and got pissed when I told him to get out.
If Gore built a cohesive park, I feel like they could get a solid vibe going again and the park could run itself. If you have enough people using the park properly, it encourages that, and discourages side jumping, standing on landings etc. Unfortunately the vibe that was at one point died pretty hard by 2010 or so.
As far as whiteface building the park. They have offered many times to help, send down the troops, and even build it all themselves but gore refuses. The last 3 or 4 years whiteface has been building a lot of rails in house since tyler watson and some of those guys got in there. The rail game has changed a ton for the better.
If gore wanted, whiteface would probably build them features and send them down. This happens at other resorts. Mtn snows rails were built by big boulder for a while, and now mt snow builds the rails for BB and the rest of peak resorts. Keystone built the rails for afton alps when vail resorts bought them out.
This is a pretty regular thing all over.
So whiteface could send some of their shittier rails they don't use plus build some new features every year, throw them on a bed and bring them down. It would be super easy.
Then you can ensure that things like this
don't happen.
ANother thing is, if the crew from whiteface sent a few people down, and using whatever man power gore had built the park right, it's not THAT hard to maintain a park once it's built if it's built right at the beginning. Just try to keep everything looking the same as it did from the start. That would save Gore a ton of hassle. They could stop having their "What stupid rail contraption will we build next" meetings and just maintain a decent park that whiteface built.
I can understand not wanting to ask for help, but having a good park should be the priority. That's the park the customers are paying for, and if you're too unwillingly to make changes, or let someone else help and make things better, than fuck you.
Props to the park crew at the face though. Doing good work the last few years, great to see.

In their eyes, they have a park, and that's all they need. I do agree with you about the mountain, I like it, I like the layout, and I generally bring that up in these threads. So I'm not one of these "Fuck this mtn and everything about it" but feel I'm pretty reasonable with my gripes whether or not others agree.
Park passes are their own challenge. It's really a tough call and up to a particular mtn. It can keep gapers out but you have to have additional staff to check passes(which at gore would be more useful helping make the park decent) Then the pain in the ass factor for people who show up randomly and have to go to the base area to get some pass so that they can ride the park, a park that isn't even worth an extra fee over 25 cents sometimes.
They should address that problem though. They need to talk to their race coaches. I've worked at a lot of different mtns, I've worked with racers at some places. One mtn I worked the start ramp for some of the races, and this year
I spent a good chunk of my birthday working on hill building a start ramp for the FIS race we had.
At gore racing brings in a lot of money, so to some extent there should be some privilege that comes with that, but it's beyond over done. The racers are treated as if they own the mtn and rules don't apply.
I remember some cunt telling me she was going to get me fired because I nicely asked her not to take her group of wedgers over the biggest takeoff in the park. And then told her off when she started yelling at me. Or another one that almost hit me while sidejumping and then told me he could do what ever he wanted, and got pissed when I told him to get out.
If Gore built a cohesive park, I feel like they could get a solid vibe going again and the park could run itself. If you have enough people using the park properly, it encourages that, and discourages side jumping, standing on landings etc. Unfortunately the vibe that was at one point died pretty hard by 2010 or so.
As far as whiteface building the park. They have offered many times to help, send down the troops, and even build it all themselves but gore refuses. The last 3 or 4 years whiteface has been building a lot of rails in house since tyler watson and some of those guys got in there. The rail game has changed a ton for the better.
If gore wanted, whiteface would probably build them features and send them down. This happens at other resorts. Mtn snows rails were built by big boulder for a while, and now mt snow builds the rails for BB and the rest of peak resorts. Keystone built the rails for afton alps when vail resorts bought them out.
This is a pretty regular thing all over.
So whiteface could send some of their shittier rails they don't use plus build some new features every year, throw them on a bed and bring them down. It would be super easy.
Then you can ensure that things like this
don't happen.
ANother thing is, if the crew from whiteface sent a few people down, and using whatever man power gore had built the park right, it's not THAT hard to maintain a park once it's built if it's built right at the beginning. Just try to keep everything looking the same as it did from the start. That would save Gore a ton of hassle. They could stop having their "What stupid rail contraption will we build next" meetings and just maintain a decent park that whiteface built.
I can understand not wanting to ask for help, but having a good park should be the priority. That's the park the customers are paying for, and if you're too unwillingly to make changes, or let someone else help and make things better, than fuck you.
Props to the park crew at the face though. Doing good work the last few years, great to see.

I hope they bring the halfpipe back to the regular mountain because since it's been down at the ski bowl, it hasn't seen that much attention compared to when it was back on the regular mountain, and I remember when it was on the Arena, and I was a little kid at the time they had it there.

It never will but that would be sick. That trail is a much better pitch, and it's in a much better location for viewing. Also would be a nice way to cap off a run through the parks or down the mtn.
They half assed it so hard when they built it at the ski bowl though. The pitch is WAYYYYYYYYYY too flat. Like not even close. Then in addition to that, they decided to build a dirt drop in (which is sensible) but took the dirt from the inrun and built the drop in out of it. So you're dropping down into an uphill, to then go up the wall, and drop into a pipe that's almost flat.
With the amount of time it takes to do the dirt work, it's mind blowing the way they did it. Now it's a poorly done, semi permanent feature.
Now that whiteface no longer builds a pipe I feel it's unlikely that gore would ever step up and do anything special.
It didn't make any sense for them to move it, but it realy doesn't make much sense for them to move it back. Especially when the likelyhood of it being cut extremely well is pretty slim.
I went to Gore for the first time last week and I actually thought it was pretty fun. A ton of incredibly dumb features for sure, but there were some gems in there (a-frame, waterfall, jumps). There were also some comically large gaps onto rails, hits of just random ass boxes thrown together into one. I thought it was pretty fun because I just got to go ski it once and it was fun to hit absurd things and laugh about how the park was set up, but if I had to ski there as my home mountain I would not be happy.
I didn't see anything really "innovative" like you guys are saying the park manager is going for, just pretty typical rails set up in idiotic fashion. Overall: fun for a day, not for a season.

Lj, you have no reason to be arguing, even if the rails were set up right you still wouldn't hit them. I haven't seen you hit any jumps there and youre known for saying "it's too rutted" or that you "want to check it out first"

Myself and another terrain park specialist went on a stakeout at the top of upper sleighride. The fence kept getting ripped down, and when I mean ripped down, I mean dragged 100 yards down the trail and tangled to death. After the 2nd or 3rd time of the day, a brilliant idea was launched.
We hid in the pine trees behind some hill. At some point a blunt was smoked to up our detective skills. After some discussion about this or that, and getting bored, we returned from the woods to realize we had fucked up and the fence was down again. I think we just left it.
Idk, we're pretty good detectives, but these must have been ninjas. Nothing you can really do there.

I lost my season pass working. Somebody clipped it to a fence so I would get it. I didn't see it that day and johara ran the fence over and got it stuck in the tiller. There was still enough of my pass left to make out, and I was told my pass was found on the fence, wrapped around the tiller. Then somebody mentioned that they had left my pass on the fence and asked if I got it.

I think I told the story of ski patrol having me and dane spit on rails to polish them up for insurance pictures. That was an amusing day.

If anyone rode there 07-08 I had finished crafting a nice big stepdown at the top of lower sleighride. Most of the snow was farmed from the woods and it was glorious, in spite of johara trying to run it over every night. Anyway I needed a slightly stealth spot to chill so I started building a wall(yes much like trump) but I didn't stop there. My wall was completed but I felt compelled to go on. There was the slight site of the triple beyond the trees so another wall was built. Eventually a roof, and 2 igloo style doors. I think at it's peak it could house 8 or 9 people comfortably. Had some ice boxes carved out to stash beers and cover them with snow so they wouldn't freeze etc. I wish I knew how to find pics of it. Was pretty epic especially for a primarily one guy build while working in secret.

Johara got me in trouble with management because I would do backflips when "inverts were prohibited" Then would always talk about some video he had from his house where him and his buddies through "nighttime powder inverts" off this snow pile next to his wood stack. Never did see the video but it was funny how hard he claimed it.

I left my snowboard there one time in near the garage and I can be pretty certain that he stole it to use for some crazy voodoo ritual to curse me. It's the only realistic thing I can come up with.

I slept up in the saddle lodge once or twice and got fresh powder down in the morning to the bottom. I was hiding in the loft up top and made a bed of tower pads I stole from patrol. I still think they leave a door unlocked at night so you could probably still do this.

The racers tried to set up a race course in gorey gully and that was the thing that broke the truce. A really shitty and probably extremely lame turf war started. I remember one racer coming into the park as a messenger saying "call off your dogs".
