Gimbal Stabilizers

Have been looking into getting one of these for a little bit now and wanted to know what others opinions are about them. Obviously if I purchase one it will be something like the DJI Ronin-M 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal our around that price.


Not a freefly or anything thats like 5k.
Anyways... Opinions? Recommendations?

The ronin m is really fun to use for skiing but very annoying imo. You can't sit it down when you're on the lift unless you turn it off, so for skiing I don't really recommend it

What are you using it for? I also wouldn't recommend it for skiing, glidecam is objectively better for that, but it's worth looking into if you're doing larger productions that aren't just ski edits.

This, IMO opinion edits shot on gimbals look wierd, it just looks unnatrual, I would reccommed getting a good glidecam and just master using it. May took more time but the footage will look much better.

IMO glidcams feel more natural and connected. Gimbals feel mechanical and skiing is not mechanical

I know the past 2 Simple edits have been filmed on some sort of gimbal just based of seeing him film, I like the look of his edits a lot.

Glidecams are better for skiing. I own a glidecam and a ronin. Gimbals are good for slider type shots and more planned out shots for larger edits. They take more time to get the shot perfect with and will slow your shooting down a little. They also are terrible for followcams because the pan and tilt doesn't immediately follow and sometimes isn't fast enough to track a skier. I would use a glidecam for a fast follow cam and gimbal for slow moving tracking and slider or jib type shots. Gimbals are great for broll and non ski shoots

Matt Stambaugh uses a gimbal for his edits.He does a pretty good job contolling it but even with his skills u can see how gimbals produce very robotic like footage. And as the previous guy said it is hard to track the skier with a gimbal on follow cams. U can see in the edit the skier just floats out of the shot some times and it takes the gimbal a couple seconds to react.

I've used a gimbal (Ronin-M) to shoot everything since July. I really like it but it definitely takes a little while to get used to and figure what sort of settings you want to run it on.
I feel that since I got the Ronin im improving the composition etc of my shots and thinking about more complex shots whereas when I was using the glidecam I was just worrying about getting a basic shot that was stable.

Totally get what you're saying. When panning it looks very robotic not like a glide cam. Glidcams are more smooth and flow way better than those!

Shots were super dope, but I can see that robotic feel. I would say glidecam.

Thanks for sharing that edit. I just posted up another one with a movi m10. It's something that dialing in the gimbal will help with the robotic movements. I honestly haven't spend a lot of time tuning them other than the balance. I like the gimbal, because I use it in a lot of my other work, and don't want to waste money on a glide cam. Plus, when I glidecam, if you watch my footage, I can be totally sober and still make it look like I'm totally drunk.

That's why we like it, but getting shots like that with a gimbal I can picture being pretty hard.

To be real I don't think so. You can get a thumb stick to control the cams movement up, down and side to side. Would probably want to get a monitor for it but you're already spending a decent amount so what's another $250 or so
