CyanicenineI don't know, but I'd love to hear the story as to why. One of my all time favorite skis is the Gotama. I can't believe they scrapped it :(

skidemon22sadly, the market for 100mm twin tips is very small. they replaced them with volkl 100Eight.
Salomon also dropped their fat twins in favor of the new QST line, which have twin rocker, but not a true twin tip. Rossi did this a few years ago too

skidemon22Volk wanted to go after the rossi soul 7/ dynastar cham 107/ blizzard bonafide market, so to appeal to the masses as well as the prosumers, they came out with the volkl 100Eight which is great for every one except those who want 108mm waisted twin tip. it looks like that product market is drying up :(

Completely untrue however, because the 100eight has entirely different tip waist tail dimensions and it no longer has the super huge turn radius that was the trademark of the Gotama/Katana style skis.
Not a proper replacement at all even ignoring the loss of twin tips, even though it's being marketed that way. Pretty disappointing, but you're probably right about just following the trends.

skidemon22Interesting, I skied the 100Eight last year when I went to the Industry demo at Loon. They were def more of long radius turn ski... I also bought the latest version of the Gotama (last years) at the beggining of last year, and would say that it is a pretty medium turn radius ski... but i would agree that the Katana is speed boat of a ski, much like the new 100Eight, though it has no metal
And to further the gulf between the 100Eight and gotama, the 100Eight is much lighter, with no fiberglass and the 3DRidge construction
CyanicenineNot sure what could account for the disconnect in feel, maybe you demoed a larger size in the 100eight? Or maybe they tweaked the rocker profile? I haven't ridden the 100eight, but that does seem odd. The Gotama has a 30 meter turn radius at the largest size, while the 100eight has a tighter 24.5 meter turn radius in the largest size. Kind of curious to demo myself now.
Does anyone know how the 4frnt Devastators compare? They have pretty similar specs to the old Gotamas, although with an added dampening layer. I've heard they are heavier, but they seem like they'd ski pretty comparably, or at least like an old metal Katana + Gotama cross.
