Vail Resorts: Mountain Safety Patrol Horror Stories

So recently my friend @klutched and I got written up by Mountain Safety Patrol officers for barking at them. Last Sunday near the end up the day we got waved down by Mountain Safety patrol officers at the bottom of the lift. Initially when they began talking to us they were accusing us of speeding and unsafe skiing, which we were not doing. So naturally we argued with them. This continued for around 20 minutes to the point that the wanted to write us up but the only thing they had to write us up for was the barking. By the end of the argument they were threatening to call the sheriff and have us sent to jail. We were upset and asked who to call for appeals after we presented our pass. They gave me a phone number which I called it today. The man I talked to (Todd) said that he needed my pass number to review the situation and would call me back. Within several minutes he called back and said he was going to suspend my pass for two weeks and refused to talk to me further other than essentially saying that I deserved it.

In Vail, where the yellow jackets are extra special d-bags:

My friend and I straight lined from GP park to the village. There was no one on the run. No one but us. We head into the village going to Vendetta's for a slice. Someone starts yelling "Where Milwaukee drinks! WHERE MILWAUKEE DRINKS," which is what's on the back of my t. I turn around to find the fattest whale you have ever seen fit into a yellow jacket running toward us with his bitch boy ticket scanner behind him. He starts in with the going too fast talk. My friend calmly says we were skiing in control and we were the only people on the run. Yellow gets in his face and starts screaming at him. Then has bitch boy scan his pass. He immediately gets shut down for a month due to one other speeding ticket within a year.

Bitch boy then tries to scan my pass. Nothing. Tries again. Nothing. At this point we're just laughing at them. I keep my pass in an RFID wallet for this reason. Yellow starts to think I don't have a pass. I say "well I didn't walk up the mountain."--laughing as this guy gets even more worked up. A fucking sheriff happens to be walking by and yellow calls him over. Now the sheriff, hand on his gun, wants to see the pass. I break out the wallet and the look on yellow's face was priceless. This is all going down in the middle of Vail Village and a crowd is forming. Somehow they only give me a warning.

Moral of the story: Get an RFID wallet and never stop for anyone yelling at you. If we had made it to Vendetta's yellow would have been trespassing..

Not sure why people ski at Vail if they are known for this crap. So many other resorts that are closer and better to choose from

Just got pulled over today for speeding at Vail. My dad is visiting in town and its his first time ever skiing Colorado and the yellow jacket didn't give a fuck. He decided that even though we're staying in an incredibly overpriced hotel in Vail for the next few days he was going to write me up and since its my second warning of the season I may very well get a 2 week suspension. Honestly fuck Vail its such bullshit I realized afterwards I shouldn't have stopped because every single time they pull you over they act all nice like they're not gonna do anything and then bam they give you a ticket. So unfair.

I disagree with this. How does being upset for losing your pass make you a spoiled brat?? I live in Montana and thankfully we don't have people that will chase after you and take your pass for minor violations. That sounds terrible for people that know how to ski.

people are too eager to get into confrontations these days. I dont understand why you dont just say sorry, wont happen again and walk away. Dont argue, even if you are in the right. there is no need to stroke your ego just like the yellow coat is stroking theirs.

agreeing with peteduncan - you pay all this money to go out an enjoy a sport you have a passion for instead of wasting away your winter months getting fat on the couch. yea the purpose of these yellow jackets is to keep the mountain safe for everyone, but there's also this thing called "abused power" and it seems like that's an overarching theme with these positions. I ski the east and haven't personally been affected by it, but I feel for those who are. because god forbid this concept of enforcement comes to our hill, aint no one gonna have passes within a week. nothing worse than working all summer for a $400-500+ ski pass, not to mention the money in equipment and gas to do what you love and get it taken away for a speed "warning." just seems harsh.

I'm sure they are a bunch of dicks, but I see so many of these threads that I don't know how people don't get that they simply can't ski fast in slow zones. If they tell you to slow down and you didn't think you were going too fast simply say sorry and that you will slow down. Don't bark at them, just have a calm, rational conversation. You have to ski slowly in slow zones, it is that simple. If they ask you to slow down you need to do it.

The funny thing is, I don't see threads like this on TGR, and there are plenty of Colorado skiers there. My guess is that they just ski slowly in slow zones and don't make a fuss when asked to slow down.

Let's say they ask you to slow down and you don't feel you were going to fast, just say you will slow down and that you did not know you were going too fast. If they are rude to you break out your phone and record it, then go to their supervisor.

My guess is that the majority of these incidents can be avoided. Just ski slowly where they ask you to, and behave calmly if they pull you over. My guess is that a substantial percentage of these incidents are from people on NS getting more worked up than is necessary. Like i said, people on TGR don't seem to have this trouble. I'm not saying the OP did something wrong, I really can't know that without being there, it's just that if it was 100% the fault of Vail we would see threads over on TGR. I'm not doubting that Vail can be a bunch of dicks, I just think that many of these issues can be avoided.

Why do you describe what you did to the slow zone ops as barking at them? It makes you sound aggressive. Were you being aggressive? If you were what did you expect to happen?

I had an incident with a guy at Mammoth about 8 years ago. He determined I was going too fast and was quite rude to me. I said I was sorry and moved on, but I was still pissed off so at the end of the day I went to find his supervisor. I told her verbatim what happened, and that I would prefer it if the yellow jacket had addressed me as sir and given me the respect that I deserve. She apologized profusely and agreed that he should have been more respectful to me. She even gave me several drink tickets. You would be amazed at what happens when you approach things calmly and rationally.

From now on if you get pulled over just pull out your phone and record the conversation. If you do that you will have ammo if you go to their supervisor and tell them they were being rude to you. If you don't want the conversation recorded then that might mean you are the one being aggressive, which won't help you out.

As far as calling the sheriff, there must be more to this story. They can't do that unless you are committing a crime. If they ask you to leave and you don't they can call the sheriff as you will be trespassing. If you are just yelling at them then you have not committed a crime.

I wonder if it has something to do with clothing? Ex: they're more likely to pull over a thug azz park rat with a 5xl tall T than the jerry looking 55 year old with skis from the 70s even if they're going at the same speed.

For real. What authority do you guys think they have? Absolutely none at all. If they stop you and you know your pass will be pulled/suspended, why the hell would you give it to them? Just say you don't have one. Worst that will happen is you go home early or walk away and ski another part of the mountain away from that douche.

It's funny, because i read this thread yesterday (without being pulled over yet by yellow jackets) and i wanted to see if this actually happens to kids because i still very seldom see yellow jackets pull over fast skiers.... guess who got yanked?

They literally only stop people for straight lining. I've been riding at vail resorts for almost 5 years and have gotten 1 verbal warning. If you're going to fast they signal at you to slow down; you don't even have to slow down you just have to make turns.

Just an FYI for everyone we were intentionally not skiing fast that day because there were so many Yellowjackets waiting around the park lift. every day the Yellowjackets at canyons wait between the bottom of the park and the park lift and profile park skiers and try to take their passes. We have seen 20+ park skiers pulled over in a two week time span in that area and not one other person, despite the fact that racers/tourists zoom through that area every day. We decided to start barking at the Yellowjackets (yes like a dog) to show that we do not respect them and that we think what they are doing is cruel and unfair. We also wanted to see just how big their heads are, and basically find out if they would actually try to give us a strike on our passes for making noises at them, which would be absurd. And they did. We did not stop them from doing their jobs, we did nothing innapropriate, and we did not endanger anyone.

I mean that makes sense hahah. I cruise keystone top to bottom switch no problem. The only bad story with safety and me happened last week. I tried to high five a yellow jacket and as I got closer he fucking jukes me and rubs his hair 90s style and finger gunned me as to say "yea, you fuckin though homie"

So you intentionally started with something, knowing that they're out there specifically to go after park skiers. Then when you got their attention, you handed them your pass? Now that they took it or gave you a strike or whatever you're mad about it?

We honestly were ready to deal with a strike on our passes if that's what it came to, we just wanted to find out exactly how far they are willing to go to get us in trouble for doing basically nothing. We're not saying we shouldn't have seen it coming, we're just trying to point out a major flaw in this system, which is that they can literally take your pass for anything they want and there is nothing you can do/say to stop it.

P.S. We only handed our passes over because there were 3 Yellowjackets and 3 ski patrollers by the end of this and they made it clear they weren't going to let us off

Weren't going to let you off? Just fucking walk away. They can't touch you, they can't tackle you, they can't shoot you.

Just walk away. It's pretty easy.

Better yet don't put yourself in this position from the start.

Not really a horror story, but since everyone else is sharing...

One time I saw a slow sign, so I slowed down. There was a yellow jacket standing right next to it. Then I skied the rest of the way down the run. The end.

Oh, was something else supposed to happen?

when my australian buddy was riding back home one day he said someone got scalped by a snowboard. some guy wasnt wearing a helmet and got merked by some douche boosting off a cat track and shaved the skin right off his head.

You know what happens if you say you don't have a pass? Theft of service ticket right there. Ski off? They'll be waiting at the bottom and for sure pull your pass on the spot. Try to keep going? They'll call the cops. They literally have all of the authourity in the world and will fuck you sideways if you try to resist. You have no way to protect yourself from this either. They profile and bully park skiers, I've seen it too many times. Trust me, anything you think of, they have thought of too and will squash you.

My problem with them is that they are not trying to keep us or other skiers at the mountain safe or at least it doesn't seem so. It seems they are just trying to pull our passes. One of my friends got talked to after hitting the large jump line at Park City, the yellow jacket told him to slow down. He was hitting the biggest jumps in the terrain park and this dip shit yellow jacket literally told him he was skiing too fast. In that situation going slower could actually lead to serious injury. And we never once swore or skied recklessly because we knew that would lead to a pass pull. Since the initial incident Ive conversed with two other Mountain Safety staff and they were both very rude and terrible to deal with. Ive talked to people that work at the resort and they said they've received a lot of complaints from season pass holders this year. Its not just me its a problem with the way Mountain Safety profile and treat park skiers. To me it seems they treat us more as criminals on their property than customers to the company they work for... Just doesn't make sense if you ask me

I have. Ive been in touch with multiple supervisors along with other employees at the resort. The problem is every customer service or phone number I call reroutes me to Mountain Safety who are obviously going to watch out for their coworkers more than an 18 year old park skier. DalleyOne of my friends got talked to after hitting the large jump line at Park City, the yellow jacket told him to slow down. He was hitting the biggest jumps in the terrain park and this dip shit yellow jacket literally told him he was skiing too fast. In that situation going slower could actually lead to serious injury.


This is a blatant lie, or you are telling half the story. No one believes you, and you are a detriment to the cause you are trying to argue for when you do that.

DalleyI have. Ive been in touch with multiple supervisors along with other employees at the resort. The problem is every customer service or phone number I call reroutes me to Mountain Safety who are obviously going to watch out for their coworkers more than an 18 year old park skier. Wow I did not initially understand what you were trying to say. I dropped what I was trying to do before and am now organizing an Anchorman style gang fight pitting park skiers against the yellow jackets I believe it will solve all the problems related to the issue.

And you are right I got the information about what happened confused. My friend was coming down the landing of the last jump in the jump line and skied to the chair lift line and that is where he was "skiing too fas"t by the yellow jackets standards. That was a stupid fuck up Im sorry.

K-Dot.You know what happens if you say you don't have a pass? Theft of service ticket right there. Ski off? They'll be waiting at the bottom and for sure pull your pass on the spot. Try to keep going? They'll call the cops. They literally have all of the authourity in the world and will fuck you sideways if you try to resist. You have no way to protect yourself from this either. They profile and bully park skiers, I've seen it too many times. Trust me, anything you think of, they have thought of too and will squash you.


All the authority in the world? They touch you and they instantly lose any authority they had in a court. All they can do is ask nicely for your pass and hope that you will present it.
Long as you don't take 30 minutes to leave you will be gone before the cops. And if it comes to the cops, you can always play stupid... in the end you do have the pass there so you weren't doing anything illegal. What are they going to get you for exactly?

buuuuuut not my problem, in MN we do what we want and as long as we stay on our half of the hill ski patrol doesn't give a shit what we do (unless you're at hyland)

This one time, I was really late for getting back to work after my lunch break and so had to really step on the gas, flew down a busy run with lots of people going pretty slow and a bunch of patrol were about 2/3 of the way down and i flew past them and you know what happened?
Nothing, because it was Europe and in Europe you take responsibility for your own actions and the resorts dont pay people to pull passes. the staff are there to either make the terrain safe and pick up the pieces after crashes or run the lifts. they dont give af if you're going mach a billion in a busy zone and you know what, we get on just fine.
America has messed up priorities when it comes to services on the hill.

the most authoritative i've ever seen a patroller get was when they found a punter getting his friend group to go under the fence on a heavy closed run (light closed is closed signs + maybe a rope, heavy is full snow fence + signs) and they asked him politely to come back the other side of the fence and ski the open runs and not the bare face there were about to attempt.
I dont think i've heard of anybody having their pass pulled for anything other than renting their season pass to others.
