Skiing in college.

Don't tell me to search bar cause this thread is different and I couldn't find it.


Anyway so I'm going to college next year and was thinking like a ski college cause why not. But I want to become something like a PA or PT or something in the medical field. So I need good grades. What are the chances of me being able to ski? I think the first year or two I might have some time but I will be making my studies a priority.

So NS, how much would I get to ski? Should I plan on skiing? Cause if I'm not gonna ski that much I've thought about selling me stuff and taking a year or two off.

Probably most directly depends on the school location and ski culture. If you were to go somewhere like UVM, a shitton of the kids there would skip class on any given day for a pow day, so you'd probably get a lot of time on the hill. If you go to school in Wash. DC, you're likely not gonna be doing a lot of skiing.

I only applied places where I can ski tho.

You just gotta live with the fact you go to school to get a degree to get a job to get money to buy ski condos all over the place then just travel and ski once you make it. In hs i went from 50+ days to maybe 5 a season in college.

my advice would be just ski when you feel you have the time to go, or if you are gonna be working to try and get a job in a ski shop/hill to at least stay involved in it. if you can schedule classes so that you'd have an afternoon or two to go up then i think that would be pretty manageable. while you need to spend more time studying in college, you won't be doing it 24/7, and you'll definitely want some free time to let off steam.

also, if you have the option to get a pass for your home mountain, i would strongly suggest getting one for skiing over winter break. you get a whole month to ski and that makes up for not getting to go consistently after that. also if you are going to a school that's close enough to visit home every now and then, you have a place to ski.

i was in a similar situation last year, and it ended up not being so bad. not getting to ski every weekend made me appreciate it way more when i was able to go.

I ski 30-40 days a year in university (full course load). Take advantage of breaks, get ahead during the week, don't party, and you'll get plenty of days in.

Lots of people I know take summer courses to lighten the winter term, that's another idea.

It's super doable.

Its all about time management, I'm currently in a PharmD grad program and I still ski pretty much every saturday/sunday. I get all of my school work done during the week and my job only schedules me on weekdays so then I can relax and enjoy the weekend on the mountain. Also taking advantage of school breaks is key

Took all my classes 2-3 days a week. Was kinda hard full days like 9 am - 9pm. Gave me a lot of free time which was mainly spent working. But if you have the financial support could easily see how this type of schedule could allow you to ski 3 days a week no problem if your committed to studying at night

Also moving out to WA and taking a gap year with my buddy. Solid plan to get some skiing in before going to college.

I get all of my school work done during the week and my job only schedules me on weekdays so then I can relax and enjoy the weekend on the mountain. Also taking advantage of school breaks is key


What they said. If you manage your time correctly, you can get a decent amount of days in. College is all about time management. Get all the work done you can during the week and enjoy your weekends. Winter break and spring break are great times to ski.

If you don't have a job in college, you'll have more free time than you think.

Well I'm not trying to quit skiing, but if the reality is that I'll ski 5 times a year I would consider selling my stuff then getting new stuff when I have the time

The path I want to take in school plus me having a job and whatever will take a lot of time. So yeah I think there will be points where I will have little to no skiing.

My personal record for a season was 40+ days my last semester in college. Night skiing at mtn creek helped that cause though.

By saying, "I need good grades" does that imply that is not normal for you? I ask because going to college for a medical type degree is going to be extra challenging if you are afraid of being able to handle the work and enjoy life...

i went to MN-Duluth so Spirit Mt was 15 minutes away. If I drove to class, it was totally doable to get some empty park laps in between classes on like Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also could ski on the weekend if not working or studying.
So it's possible, I didn't get good grades though. C's get degrees, luckily my major was in demand and I still got a job.
but if you go somewhere like CU or U of UT or MSU Bozeman, you'll most likely drop out or fail out so might as well save your money and never go in the first place if you're thinking skiing has to be huge in your life

^ what he said, but it also really depends on the school you're going to. If you're at a school close to night skiing (within an hour) it's defintiely super do-able to gun it after class once in a while, but if you're 4 hours away it's a whole different story, and maybe you'll only get a few weekends in here and there.... so op... where are you going to school?

No I get good grades, but I'll be honest I get the occasional B in some of the harder classes. I just know to get into medical programs you really need to pretty much get all A's. And where the classes get harder the second half of college and the medical programs in just afraid I won't have time to ski, keep my grades up, work a job, and possibly other things

All my friends that are out in utah seem to do a shit ton of skiing while being in school..more than me and im not even in school and im on the park crew at my hill.

I do this and party, pushing 50 days a year. No j term no summer classes. Full classes Mon We, no class until 3:40 on Tues and Thurs (leave the hill at 1:30 or so ), no classes on Friday. I schedule my (unpaid) internships on my busy days to make them even more busy, but if it means I ski tues tues thurs and Friday that's fine with me. I go to UNH

By full load do you mean 12 credits? Because 12 to 15 credits is very manageable when you want to ski as well, especially 12. I'm doing 18 and have time to ski would never be able to get in 30-40 days.

Not hating will_pow, but full course load can be interpreted differently.

I haven't decided on a school yet because a lot of scholarship things are still being worked out. But it'll either be MSU, Westmin, or ISU. All have skiing 30 minutes or less but just the people I know who take school very seriously and take the path I want to take just don't get a lot of ski time.

If you are willing to manage your time well and get your work done early you can go to college and get plenty of skiing in too. I am taking engineering class full time and I still find the time to ski at least 2 days every week.

Study your ass off after class throughout the week, go skiing for a few hours on the weekends, study when you get back home. Don't party as much as your friends and keep your nose in the books whenever you can. There's always time to ski if you properly plan stuff out and stay on top of your shit.

I'm down to weekend warrioring it once a week. I managed to save up for a seasons to my local mountain which is sick. The only sundays that I have missed are the ones during finals. Just don't be expecting to go out ripping everyday after classes during the week unless you have a hill super close and you can still have skiing.

That's my experience so far anyways,

Yeah I have a full 16 credit course load and I can ski up to 5 days a week on most weeks.

I average 3-4 a week because I get tired.

i skied once or twice a week in college as a biochem major and i got good enough grades to get into med school
