Let's Talk: Wood Rails

My local ski resort has a small backwoods area with some rigged wood rails. I haven't had a chance to try them due to the lack of snow recently.

How well do they work?

I'm debating on building one for my back yard if I get positive feedback about them.

love wooden rails, my dad and I pulled some old fallen trees out of our woods and i turned them into rails, will post them in here later. They take a few tries to get use too but slide well

I caught an edge on one snowboarding back when I was 12 and smashed my face into the ground and haven't touched one since.

Butternut's parks are a joke. I go a few times a year since my fmaily has a summer home nearby.

Their rails are decent at best and jumps are absolute garbage. They would be much better off dedicating less features that are built better. No idea who though that rail would be "fun" on skis or a snowboard

id be fine 5050ing that on a snowboard but those and corrugated tubes i mostly avoid on skis unless im really feelin it

I ski every weekend at butternut and that rail is a death wish for sure, but have seen a few boarders hit it. They have 3 other ones in rn though that are really hittable and actually pretty fun. The jumps improved this year for sure the bottom jump is actually formed like a normal jump instead of a abused cheese wedge like normal there.

I was able to hit this with the bark on and everything on a warm day. I couldn't do much on it for swaps because I was scared of catching my edge but ifyou hit a wood rail like how you would hit a corrugated tube you should be fine

It's called prospector and it's definitely sick. It's a shame that the place is so overrun with gapers, because the actual builds are always awesome across all the parks.

depends how well they're manicured. The one resort in ohio that has it, the rail has bumps and things to catch on all over it. The one skier I saw hitting it almost accidentally did a misty 4 out. And by that, I mean he almost fucking died.

At Mt Snow they lube them up real good so it's almost impossible to catch an edge.

Wood rails are pretty nice some times they get way to sticky though and you catch but if you put polish and polyurethane and sand it down it will be nice!

This. I was going to say, aren't wood rails waxed? Or at least at the big resorts, don't they put a wax or coating on to make them slide?

Some friends and I built 3 rails out of trees we cut down at our home mountain. There is a longish down rail, a short pole jam and a c rail. They are pretty fun especially snowboarding and one of them works pretty well even for skiers. The bone zone has made them super popular recently
