when you close up a wound, it removes the oxygen from the environment and allows anaerobic bacteria to thrive. by keeping it open, you prevent the growth of those bacteria. there are a lot of anaerobic bacteria in your mouth that they don't want infecting the cut.
should have thought of that. saw a patient in the emergency room who was bitten by another girl and they didn't close up the cut for the same reason
