Starting a company: Snooty Co.

Alright so my skiing friends and I have been talking about starting a little company. We are based at a small hill in western Illinois called Snowstar. We want to start filming and making a rep for our company. We want to start off selling simple things like water bottles, keychains, beanies, etc. Also creating our own YouTube account for funny videos and edits of skiing and other activities we do. We are completely serious about starting this up and hoping to be successful. Serious replies about your thoughts please, we appreciate it NS.

I understand your line of thinking but we are starting small, with simple things. We don't have a ton of money to invest into it, seeing what kind of feedback we get from our local customers and see if they have any opinions on products.

Small things like T shirts or beanies would be pretty legit, I'd be down to buy a cool looking piece of clothing especially if it means helping out a start up. Look into putting up a small website or an online store.

That's dope, we are still in the start up stage trying to get a few kinks worked out but for sure man I appreciate it. I'll get back to you telling you what's up in a few days.

Like what was mentioned above be unique. Also invest in a good website and conduct business there because speaking from experience the midwest is ok but not the best place to start a company like this

Good luck dog, my advice would be to develop a solid online presence as you begin developing products. Find a very good writer, someone whos content you read and are genuinely impressed and pulled in by. That person is your spokesperson. They email news outlets in the area, develop relationships with product manufactuerers. Look for a local producer in your area to discuss profitability and meet the competition if it exists.

I actually just started up my own clothing company a few months ago. It began as a school project, then turned into a DECA competition entry. Were currently waiting to compete on the state level and were hoping to make it to nationals. We've been featured in our local newspaper as well as a our states Channel 3 news (WFSB Better Connecticut). Were selling off our last 100 shirts or so now and doing some side lines in other markets. Reach out if you want anymore advice or help, its tough dude i wont lie. Youre going to have to work harder than you ever have yet if you want it to work and theres going to be risk and money involved.

Putting the horse before the cart. If you want to start this, start riding together, and filming edits. Don't talk about how you want to, do it. Then make some tshirts etc.

I'm not saying that nobody will buy them, but they will sell better if it's actually a real thing rather than an idea. A lot of people have ideas, most people don't follow through with them.

Keep skiing, filming, posting edits, etc. Do a bunch of that if you can. Get some gear for yourselves and rep it. Sell some at the mtn. Kids will be interested when they see you out there shredding with your crew. Then go fron there, sling some online etc.

Why would I buy a water bottle or a keychain for your crew right now? I don't know who you are, i haven't seen you ski, what am I representing if I buy your shirt?

Keep shredding, keep filming, keep posting edits, then worry about the other stuff.

That's just my $.02

Alright. I'm not doubting you or trying to discourage you here, and I apologize if I'm coming off as an asshole. But I'm assuming your crew is around 14 years old, and I know plenty of people who made the same mistake (myself included) and look back laughing at 14-yr-old self, bummed about wasting $200 on Finish Line tall t's.

People need a reason to give you a cent of their money. For a "crew" company, you will need at least one of the following, preferably 2:

-Extremely good skiing accompanied by solid filming and editing
-be outrageously hilarious (and not just funny to your friends)
-offer a product that people want more than what is currently available (definitely the hardest one)

If you do proceed, don't judge success on selling 20 t-shirts to kids at your local mountain. There is a huge difference between appealing to your own community and appealing to random people that have no idea who you are.

Again, I didn't mean to discourage you at all, just wanted to offer some insight on what to expect. I really do hope you can prove me wrong. Keep us updated!

We have some solid skiing skills and a few people that do editing pretty well, we are pretty funny guys in my opinion but of course that is for other people to decide, and I agree it is going to be hard, but why not try right? While we are young chase the dream while we don't have college loans to pay for or kids to take care of or jobs to worry about. I definitely know it is going to be tough to be unique and one of kind, but we are going to try.

Like you should have posted this thread after you had an edit of your crew and been like "this is my crew, this is us shredding. Follow us, and buy our shit eventually"
