I know there is a post about this that just came out, but I want to see what you guys think about my opinion, so I made this post for it.

Let me share what I have been able to gather over the past few years.

I'm not saying that we as humans have nothing to do with the raise in temperature. But people saying the the only reason why the temperature around the world is rising is because of human activity are ignorant.

The world is coming out of a mini ice age that was based in the 1800's. Since then, the amount of greenhouse gasses and most prominently CO2 have risen.

This is a chart showing CO2 vs temperature over the past 800,000 years. What's most interesting is if you put those two charts together you'll find that the temperature increases before CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Even back 800,000 years!

I mean seriously consider how much CO2 emissions we have been able to be exposed to and burn off since the 1750's (the beginning of the industrial age). Now imagine how much carbon something like the presumed "supervolcano" that made most of the dinosaurs go extinct would have released.

What 90% of the people out there in the world don't understand is that this has been going on forever, way before humans. There is no stopping this cycle.

I'm studying geology, which can prove these cycles. Large deposits of carbon in layers show that this is no new news.

What does this mean for skiing?

Well, more days in a t-shirt. That's about it. It being warm out doesn't mean we are going to stop getting snow, anyone that knows a decent bit about meteorology can tell you that warm weather drives moisture into the air. Cold nights can drop TONS of snow if the formula is there.

Sorry if this seems like a rant, but really it's a good thing to talk about.. Feel free to argue in the replies.

Thank you! Finally someone else that gets it! Everyone looks at me like I'm crazy whenever I bring this up. Big picture, we are just part of the cycle and this is a process that has been going on since the beginning. The surface temperature has actually decreased remarkably from where it was years ago and all of these record highs are in such a small respective window of history. I hate what the weather is doing as much as the next skier, my mountain's biggest jump is a little 10' kicker, but I don't see it as anything to get worried about.

It's also ignorant to think that the increase in humans and burning fossil fuels in last 50 years aren't going to effect the climate. There is a serious issue and the last thing we need is some know it all college student telling people not to worry about global warming. If we don't change how this society lives there will be irreversible consequences.

I don't know much about this stuff (I'm learning though), but I believe the problem is that our CO2 - and in effects our temp - has far, far, far gone past the highs that are part of the normal cycle. To the extent that it is almost past a tipping point and the earth won't be able to return it to the natural cycle.

Either way, there is no reason to not take action and not work to help stop our carbon emissions. Even if climate change had no factor in this, it is still a healthier, cleaner, and longer lasting solution.

I never claimed to knowing it all man! I claim to doing research which clearly you haven't if you believe we have been burning fossil feels for only 50 years. I wanted to share with you the science behind global warming.

I'll take your argument though. You say there are effects of humans burning fossil fuels on the environment. Which I can't argue... You're totally right. However it's been going on for close to 250 years.

The effect on the environment of those fossil fuels burning is little to nothing in the natural cycle of the earths temperature.

Based of your argument you're saying that the ice age (which if you didn't know, was way before the use of fossil fuels eheath) ended because of some human interaction? How do you think the glaciers that covered 3/4ths of the earth melted man?

NATURAL CYCLE.

Do we effect the environment? Yes. Is it the cause of a massive raise in temperature? No.

I'm skeptical of your graph because atmospherics CO2 levels are currently well above 400ppm. Which would make your graph tell a very different story. I'm not saying I know what the answer is nor do I think anything can really be done to make all 160+ countries around the world do away with fossil fuels (Mostly China), however to say that our excessive pumping of CO2 into the atmosphere isn't causing the earth to warm is going against basically the entire scientific community.

But I mean Ted Cruz called himself Galileo for challenging climate change which is kind of funny because Gallileo was the first person to spot Venus through a telescope and describe its brilliant color which is the product of a runaway greenhouse effect.

As the sun gets hotter and our oceans start to evaporate we will eventually become like Venus (900+F surface temps without this effect would be about 100F. I'm not interested in roasting turkeys outside so lets not enable it.

Mauna Loa observatory is interesting to say the least. That's where that chart comes from. It's not showing what the average concentration is across the world, it's showing what is is on top of the volcano it's placed on.

If you ask me it's a very questionable way to measure the earths CO2 emissions on top of a tube spewing out CO2.



I mean look at this map.. Taken from their website. They have major volcanoes marked on it... Have your opinion but I would be asking why they don't have it on an isolated island that isn't a volcano, instead of Hawaii.

Im sorry, I was looking for a different map. That's not the one with volcanoes on it. They had one up a couple of months ago.

I'm completely aware of natural weather cycles, but its going to get worse if we don't change how we do things. Denying that we're effecting the climate is idiotic.

That is really cool you found that! Nice one.

Don't take this personally, but I really have to stay adamant on my viewpoint here. It seems to me like the idea of testing average CO2 for the world on a volcano is stupid!

I live about 20 minutes away from sulfur springs that release CO2 aswell. Even when the springs aren't spouting you can still smell the high sulfur content in the air. My point is that it doesn't matter weather the volcano is erupting or not, you're still going to get an inaccurate number from a reading.

It's like testing the inside of a smoke stack when it's not running and getting 400ppm of CO2 (alleged average). But, when it's running at full capacity it outputs 100,000 tons of CO2 (the eruption in 1984). Why not test it away from the smoke stack?

It would seem to me like they want that rigged answer you know?

In you your original post are you talking about he Permian extinction or the Jurassic extinction when you mention dinosaurs being killed off?

do you know what the population of the world was in 1800, 1850, 1900, 1950, 2000, and today? Do you know what industrialization is, and when that happened to the largest population centers on the planet?

Your reasoning for discounting CO2 change readings from hawaii is akin to discounting temperature change readings from the north pole because its colder up there than where you live. Its fucking moronic.

Do you understand that methane is exponentially more powerful as a greenhouse gas than CO2? Do you also realize that there are vast, vast, vast deposits located in the permafrost of the arctic and siberia- permafrost that is melting at an accelerating rate releasing the methane into the atmosphere?

Do you understand that as a very green geology student you have little to no understanding of geology, let alone topics that are tangentially related and which you have zero training in?

Why do you not want to stop air pollution and transition towards clean, renewable sources of energy as soon as possible?

give me an example of a "clean, renewable source of energy". Because from what I know things like wind turbines and hydroelectricity make a bigger carbon footprint than any of us make in a lifetime just to make them and then they end up making half that energy and taking up space. There are countless peer reviewed studies supporting the idea that humans have a significant contribution to climate change. As someone studying geology you should be very familiar with the carbon cycle. Obviously countless factors contribute to the carbon cycle but humans have the ability to artificially put more carbon in the air. What climate scientists are concerned about is that atmospheric carbon levels are rising more rapidly than ever before as humans constantly pump new co2 into the air. Carbon levels will never fall if we continue to pump carbon into the air faster than the oceans and the forests can ever absorb it. Obviously this is a simplified explanation, but volcanoes give the carbon cycle plenty of time to maintain a balance or at least patterned changes in carbon levels. If you don't think things like palm oil fires that put out more carbon on a daily basis than the entirety of the U.S. economy aren't having an adverse effect on the carbon cycle, than I think you're hiding from the truth.

What a terrible fucking attitude, the only way anything is going to change is individuals believing things can change and electing officials that will change things. Are you even aware of the paris climate meetings? Everyone is putting the hammer down on China, things are slowly changing and its not gonna change overnight, I mean shit even over 5 years. We're talking about long term change here and acting like that's impossible is a dangerous virus of thought.

Elon Musk and Nuclear power are the best bets to overcome global warming.

Humans are not going to inhabit the earth forever, we will become extinct at some point, doesn't mean we should treat the earth like a dump. We have to accept that there will be some major irreversible changes to the earth as the population increases exponentially.

Wouldn't say he's denying a possible effect of human activity on climate. He's skeptical of the legitimacy of such a claim based on his research. Nothing about that is idiotic. This corresponds directly to a similarly never before seen rise in CO2 levels... which again correspond to human industrialization on a large scale.

Wait till you take the class where you learn about Milankovitch cycles and orbit eccentricities. It's normally the point where geology students decide all other science about climate change is bunk.

Haha yes. The guy is a caricature of that overly self assured college student. Most folks go/went through that stage of our lives and its fairly comical now haha.


Then prove him wrong. There's no sense in making such accusations without countering his argument. It's silly and gets you know where if you're trying to have an actual debate on humans possible effect on climate. That's all I'm saying. My opinions on the matter aside I'm just sick of how people on this website cannot have a civil debate about anything.

Yes.

Again, i am worried about artificial, unregulated, accidental geoengineering of our atmosphere that could irreversibly damage the natural carbon cycle or atmosphere of our planet.
