Winding up into spins?

I watched the super useful "How to 540" tutorial earlier and and noticed that winding up into the spin isn't necessary. Is it ever necessary?

You really shouldn't ever be winding up. It's a bad habit to get into, and causes you to spin too early. The way you should be generating rotation is by making yourself more compact once you leave the takeoff.

That's the quick version, but the point is, prespinning is for noobs

Don't you dare wind up for anything that's a five forty and below. It's sinful. Just carve hard. That's why Mingg likes me so much, I carve hard.

Unless you're getting ready to throw a 1980 off of a 15 foot jump, you don't need to wind up.

I wind up for 7's... just feels natural and works well. To each his own, i know winding helped me learn 5's quickly when i first started

how should you take your 5 to a 7 or 9 if not by winding up? I used to be able to 7 while winding up but it looked/felt like shit and I've been trying to reteach myself the right way. Maybe set harder once I have have popped or pop harder? Bigger jump?

So im just learning how to 360 and such on small jumps (like 5-10 foot jumps) and ive been told to wind up to the point where (keep in mind i spin left) my left hand touches my right knee, and as i pop i twist. this is wrong?

okay so that helps quite a bit, but im still confused on how you actually get the spin going, you still spin with your arms and hips but you dont wind up? How do you have enough rotation to get around on small jumps? I feel like i wouldnt have enough spin and id land at like 270 or i just would rotate enough

I feel like it depends on the rotation, the jump, and what you mean by prespinning. Are we talking like ssx tricky where if you prespin 100yards out you spin like a top, or simply initiating the spin with your arms.

Idk, I feel like you can get a lot of power from your edges and arms, and still pop perfectly fine, and send it clean.

I probably couldn't even do a 7 on skis at this point anyway so my opinion doesn't count for much.

Have you tried spinning on a trampoline? You can feel the difference between setting a rotation with your arms vs doing a rotation with your hips if you mess around a bit.

i can try that sometime when i get around to a trampoline park i use to focus on back and frontlips/mistys which knew how to set without wind up

It's all about the pop. Carving off the lip to increase your spin will fuck you up 10x over. You need to literally jump off the edge of the lip. Everything starts with a straight up pop (for beginners; we aren't talking about cork three's)

I mean, you do want to use your arms to initiate the spin. It's just that actively thinking about winding up is not the right mindset. Your arms should help lead your hips and the rest of the body as you pop.

It's really tough to not have any wind up, but the goal is to keep it minimal
