It's a diesel and it's in great shape so it won't be as big of a problem as it would a gas car

260,000 miles is definitely a lot. But the Mk4 TDI engines that are the golfs, jettas, etc are totally able to be still running great with that sort of mileage on them.

They are diesel, not gas. Gas I wouldn't go anywhere near with that much, but diesel can handle it. We have a 2003 golf with more than 260,000 (about 430,000 km on it) and it's still in very great shape and runs excellent.

It just really depends how the previous owners treated it. For instance, since sulphur has been removed from diesel, have they been adding sulphur additives to the fuel? Apparently that's pretty important in keeping the wear down in diesels. I'd also be more worried about the rest of the car. At that much mileage even if they've been replaced after the first 150,000 miles stuff like tie rod ends and ball joints and axle bushings and bearings and everything brake related, etc, etc needs to be looked at carefully otherwise if you're spending $800 on the car you might really end up spending 2 grand. Especially if you need it to pass a safety. you could easily triple your costs if you're not doing the work yourself.

But if everything is in great condition and the previous owners were good with it, there's no reason it can't get another 50,000-100,000 miles. Just don't spend anything more than maybe 700 on it unless pretty much everything has been redone recently.

Make sure the timing belt/chains were done. Front end suspension is notorious for going out on all jetta/golf/passat. Is it a 5 speed or the auto? The auto slush box is also a part to be weary of with those miles.

Volkswagens like to fall apart past 200k miles, along with basically all cars. If you wanna do it have fun but if you don't know how to do shit with cars or if you don't have the money to pay for repairs don't buy it.

No ad yet but it's my brothers buddy selling it and it's in really good shape it's just that TDI's are hard to find up here in Alaska so I really want to get it.

Expect a rebuild shortly after you get it. No way of telling what shape the piston rings, heads, valvetrain, or block are really in by glancing at it.

The reason diesels are uncommon in Alaska is because diesels arent the best in cold weather.

I had a Jetta 1.8T for a long while, great car. Still holds a special place in my heart. Being in the community for a long time the thing that I found is the biggest indicator on the reliability of these cars is where the parts are made, and where it was assembled. I had a 2002. That year VW had shifted its assembly plant to Mexico. My friends who had 'Made in Germany, Assembled in Germany'(PRE 2002) VW's never had near the amount of problems I did. Conversely, I never had the problems that the newer cars had post 2002 'Made and Assembled in Mexico'. With that said, get the VIN number from the car and use this chart. If it was made and assembled in Germany, that car probably has a ton of life in it.

Even if the engine is still good, which it may well be the TDI is awesome, you get into a situation where it needs everything else if it hasn't been replaced. A bunch of little stuff can start to really add up, especially when the car is probly only worth 1000 bucks max. Once you factor in tires brakes suspension alternator water pump electrical issues and a million other potential issues it may not be a good buy.

^ to add on to what casey is saying a bunch of little bullshit stuff will break once you actually have to start doing the repairs. rubber gets hard and brittle on older vehicles so as soon as you tear into it you'll be fixing other little shit that fell apart while you were working on the original problem.

As other people have said the belts go pretty quick and I've had some issues with the front end as well as a few electrical issues, but all in all the car runs great. You'll likely encounter some smaller problems but those cars can totally handle 260k. I know some people who drive them well over 300k and they run great
