It's basically hotmail or yahoo mail, except gmail. The biggest thing that makes it special is that you can have up to 1 gigabyte of data on your account at any given time. It also has a bunch of other handy features, like keeping email replys between you and another person all in one 'thread.'
Some people also think gmail is bit creepy (see http://www.google-watch.org/gmail.html for details). I personally think it's mostly paranoid mumbo jumbo, with maybe a little bit of truth. But hey, I got nothing to hide.
